All of our parishioners are encouraged to count their blessings each day and to make a sacrificial return through the parish offertory, and by compassionately serving one another s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Mass Schedule: Weekend: Saturday Vigil - 4:30 PM Sunday - 7:30, 9:00, 10:30, 12:00 noon Weekdays and Holy Days: as announced in bulletin Reconciliation: Saturday - 3:15 to 4:00 PM Sunday - 8:15 AM PARISH MEMBERSHIP: Active parish membership is both necessary and helpful to all involved when seeking sponsorship certificates, Marriage or Baptism preparations. Please call the rectory to register or to report address or phone number changes. HOSPITAL VISITS: Please have someone notify the rectory when you or a family member is hospitalized. BAPTISM: Parents must attend a Baptism Prep Class before the Baptism of their child. Classes are held on Sunday in the months of Feb., Apr., Jun., Aug., Oct., and Dec., and Baptisms are held once a month. 3 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Page Three BEARERS OF THE WORD The Church has placed a number of notable feast days immediately after Christmas. The feasts of Stephen, John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents form a summary of the life lived in Christ, the Word made flesh. What do these have to do with the feast of the Holy Family, which crowns the Octave of Christmas? These feasts remind us that suffering will occur in fulfilling the mission of Christ, and that we are all called to be bearers of this Word whose birth we celebrate. We also see this manifested in the lives of Joseph and Mary, both of whom took social and religious risks in obedience to the will of God, and both of whom were open to the word of God sent to them from on high. In these ways they prefigured the life of Jesus himself. Most likely, few of us found ourselves at Mass this past Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but the essence of these feasts and the essence of the holiness of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus remain central, a holiness we celebrate today. St. Vincent de Paul Society: Meets every second Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in the convent. Parishioners are welcome to visit a meeting! Members take part in the activities of their choice, including helpful visits to families and persons in need, or some of the services found below. All services need new helpers! Clothing Center: The Clothing Center has resumed service and is now accepting fall and winter clothing, footwear and linens. Food Project: Parishioners donate bags of non-perishable foods and toiletries in bins at the church entrances. Volunteers bring these to the convent where members sort and store it for the needy families we visit and for food pantries. Envelopes for money or gift cards are at the bins. Partnership with Share Care: Parish drivers provide rides for elderly and handicapped parishioners. New drivers are welcome! Need a ride? Requests must be made at least two week in advance. Call Share Care at , identify as a St. Anne s Parishioner. Family Matters: Let there be peace on earth: May the families in our parish be a beacon of light and hope that peace can prevail in our communities and throughout the world. Pray For One Another. Monthly Mass for Anointing of the Holy Spirit: The next Mass for Anointing of the Holy Spirit will be January 9th, 7:00 PM at St. Anne s Church. Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Clifton Bishop, Jr - Diocesan Liaison for Charismatic Renewal and Associate Pastor, St. Anne. Adoration and Confessions from 6-7 PM. Any and all inquires, please call St. Anne Rectory. We welcome all who wish to lend a helping hand to our needy Bethlehem neighbors or to transport elderly parishioners! Thanks for your generous support in the 5th Sunday collections! 4 Parish Membership Requirements: We are often asked to verify that an individual is an active member of St. Anne s so that he or she may enter into a valid marriage, act as a sponsor for Confirmation, or stand as a godparent for Baptism. Please note that we can only verify active status if: 1. You are registered in the parish census database 2. you have some contribution record within the last three years. (This is often the only means of determining that one is attending Mass and, therefore, practicing the Faith) It is further requested that, when a household member reaches age 21, he or she should register separately as an adult member and have their on contribution record, even if still residing with parents. Please note also: to be approved a Baptism Godparent or Confirmation sponsor, one must be over 16, have received Confirmation and, if married, must be in a valid Catholic marriage (One witnessed by a Catholic Priest or Deacon, or with proper dispensation from the Bishop.) Annual Giving Tree: The Giving Tree can be located in the main vestibule of the church. Due to the lack of storage space available, Catholic Charities ask that instead of donating specific items they ask that parishioner donate gift cards for stores that carry baby items. Suggested stores: Babies R Us, Kmart, Target, Walmart. Gift cards may be dropped off at the rectory or dropped in the collection basket. Thank you for your continued support of this wonderful program to help new mothers! March For Life: St. Anne s Parish is sponsoring a bus day trip to the 2018 March for Life in Washington D.C. A 50-passenger motor coach will be leaving St. Anne s on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 7:30 AM and leaving Washington at approximately 4:30 PM to return to Bethlehem. The cost of the trip is $25 per person. The Knights of Columbus of St. Anne s have kindly donated to reduce the cost per person. Please join us to show your support for the unborn! Benjamin Franklin Page Four TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There s no more unusual setting to celebrate today s Feast of the Holy Family than Barcelona, Spain and the towering unfinished sandcastle known officially as the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. In 1882, the plan was hatched to build a vast place of worship in reparation for the revolutionary and liberal leanings of the city. The modern artist Antoni Gaudi dedicated his life to the project, living in the building, attending Mass daily, and giving up his personal wealth. When people pressed him to pick up the pace, he responded, My client is not in a hurry. (Gaudi s cause for beatification is moving along, and he could be the first professional artist and architect to be beatified.) The Spanish Civil War, a disaster for the Catholic Church in which thousands of priests, brothers, and nuns were murdered, halted work in In the 1950s work began anew, speeded up by computers in the 1980s. Still, the final stage of construction is not due to end until If the original methods had stayed in place, it would take several hundred more years to complete the plan. So far there are eight towers, with four to go. The highest steeple is three feet shorter than the nearest hill, since the architect didn t want his work to surpass God s artistry. The three faces of the basilica each have three doors, with the faces named Passion, Nativity, and Grace. The interior is crammed with geometric figures that almost seem to spin, crazy-quilt windows, spiral staircases, and jumbles of statues and figures. Although inspired by ancient Gothic cathedrals, the style is called Expressionist, and very little is left unexpressed by the masonry.
