2 OUR SAVIOUR S LUTHERAN CHURCH About Us Our Saviour s Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has been firmly planted in the Phillips Community since A Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation, we celebrate our diversity of age, race, gender identities, sexual orientations, culture and citizenship. Welcome, Visitors! Welcome to all visitors and guests. If you live here, we hope you ll consider joining. If you are here for a short time, we hope you ll feel at home. Please pick up a copy of our newsletter, The Sentinel, from the entry table. Need hearing assistance or larger print? Please ask an usher. Children are welcome to participate fully in worship. We feel strongly that children s spirituality develops through experience. In our community, children lead as ushers, musicians, readers and communion servers. We offer kid s worship folders. We expect that children will behave as children--giggles, wiggles and all. Kids (and their parents) sometimes need a break. In our reading corner in the Hospitality Center we offer books, a few toys and more. Kids and parents are invited to go in and out of the sanctuary as needed. Safe Church. For the safety of all our children, we ask that children be attended at all times. Please accompany your child to the bathroom and reading corner. Copies of our Safe Church Policy are available from the church office. Transportation and Parking Parking Handicap access is available in the small lot at the back of the church, accessed from the alley. Sunday morning we may use the Hope Academy lot (across Chicago Ave). The Phillips Eye Institute ramp on 24 th Street (1/2 block west of the church) is public; the fee is $4. Please note street parking is limited to residents only during certain hours. Buses. Route 5 runs on Chicago Avenue right in front of the church. It is our opportune time to return to the God who rescues; to receive the gifts of God s grace; to believe with the heart and confess with the mouth the wonder of God s love in Jesus; and to resist temptation at every turn. This is no small pilgrimage on which we have just embarked. It is a struggle Jesus knew. It is a struggle Jesus shares. While we are longing for a Springtime of the Soul, Jesus feeds us at his table and we are sent out like seeds on the wind. Gathering Gathering Music Welcome GATHER Worship draws us into community. 4 *Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who gathers us in the wilderness to redeem us, anoint us, and make us new. Amen. In these forty days, let s be honest, confess our sin, prepare the soil of our soul, and receive God s promise of mercy. We sing, Kyrie eleison. God at the margins, We have wandered far from your home; again and again, we lose our way, without you, we wither and fade. We turn inward, afraid of the world around us. We forget that you have saved your people before and promise to do so again. Do not remember the deeds of our past, but break us open and nourish our souls. Restore us so we know your forgiveness is sure, your welcome is clear, and your love overflows. We sing, Christe eleison. Like a hen who gathers her chicks, God embraces you in tender care. Like manna in the desert, God feeds you with surprising mercy. Word Silence for reflection PRAYER OF THE DAY We open ourselves to God in prayer, gathered to listen for the Spirit s work through the themes of the day. Our Amen means, May it be so. SILENCE Kids will make noise. It s okay. We all need to learn to practice silence. Breathe, center, make space to receive. Psalm Second Reading Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. *Gospel Acclamation READINGS We listen to the poetry and stories of Scripture set alongside each other, us, and the events of this week. In our listening, we are in holy conversation with our ancestors in the faith. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION We rise in body or spirit to greet the good news and acknowledge the power of Christ in this Word. 6 This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON What is the good news for us? The preacher leans on the Holy Spirit to break open the readings, bringing a fresh and faithful word. HYMN OF THE DAY The assembly becomes the preacher; God s Word is proclaimed in song. Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. Sermon *Hymn of the Day PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE We entrust our prayers for all creation to the One who hears our cries. *Prayers of the People (Each petition will conclude with, Hear us, O God and the congregation responds, your mercy is great. ) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. PEACE Having been reconciled to God through Christ, God gives us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18-19) for the sake of the world. We share a sign of Christ s peace and reconciliation with one another. OFFERING We offer our money as a sign of the giving of our whole selves in grateful response for all God s gifts. *Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Meal (The people greet each other: Peace be with you. ) Gathering our Gifts All present, even those who contribute through automatic payments, are invited to lay hands upon the collection plate symbolizing their contributions. 6

7 *Offertory Hymn *Offering Prayer Let us pray. Generous God, you feed us with the harvest of the land, and you provide for our every need. Receive our gifts of money, imagination, and labor, and transform them into a feast that welcomes all, in Jesus Christ, our host and our guest. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy we praise your name and join their unending hymn: GREAT THANKSGIVING Our hearts are lifted in gratitude. At the table we are not remembering something that happened, we are celebrating something that is happening in and among us now. 7

8 *Sanctus SANCTUS Hosanna literally means, Help, now! We plead for God to come in fullness. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER At the table we tell our family stories. At the heart of this story is Jesus, the Word made flesh, who promises to be present in the bread and wine we share. *Eucharistic Proclamation and Prayer *Lord s Prayer (adapted by Bret Hesla) Gracious Spirit, who loves us like a mother, whose realm is blooming among us now. And within. We pray that your compassion guide us in every action. Give us what we need for each day, and help us to be satisfied with the miracle of that alone. Forgiver, whose embrace brings us to wholeness without our asking, may we reconcile ourselves to one another in humility. And may we cancel the crushing debts that imprison our neighbors so that communities of joy and health may flourish. May we neither profit from nor ignore evil, but ever work to thwart it with nonviolence as we co-create the realm of peace in this world, now and each day. Amen. 8

9 Invitation to Communion Distribution All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. A gluten free wafer is also available. Those who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing.
