July 12, 2015 Outdoor Worship Seventh Sunday after Pentecost WE WELCOME YOU As a diverse congregation, we welcome in the spirit of Christ all women, men, and children without regard to race, nationality, marital status, family composition, sexual orientation, gender-identity, socio-economic status, or physical ability, inviting all to participate fully in the life and ministry of our parish. We encounter Christ in each person and therefore treat one another with trust, love, care, and respect. Our Communion tables are open to all. Children and others who do not commune may receive a blessing. Embracing the diversity of God s creation and celebrating our oneness in Christ. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Reverend Kathy Nolte 611 Randolph Oak Park, Illinois

Outdoor Worship Announcements Confession All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. The voice of God spoke over the waters, And the voice of God said, Let there be.and there was. The voice of God said, Let there be Good Shepherd congregation, and there was. And it was good. The voice of God came from heaven, Women: And the voice of God said, You are my daughter, the beloved Men: You are my son, the beloved All: You are my children with whom I am well pleased. In the washing of the baptismal waters, we became light light to the world. And God saw that it was good. The voice of God is powerful; the God of glory thunders; the voice of God flashes forth flames of fire: Before this God, we humbly bow and confess that we have not lived in the freedom of our baptism. Silence for reflection Creator God, we have not loved as you love us. We have not loved our neighbors and all of creation as you ask. As you ordered the chaos of creation, so order the chaos of our lives. Grant us your grace. Amen. 2

Through Jesus Christ your sins are forgiven. Hear the words anew, You are my son my daughter my child my beloved one; with you I am well pleased. Hear the words and go in peace. Opening Songs This Is the Day This is the day, (echo) That the Lord has made, (echo) We will rejoice, (echo) And be glad in it, (echo) This is the day that the Lord has made. Praise God s holy name. Hallelujah! Greeting The grace that is Christ s gift to us, the love of God, and the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace be with you all. And also with you. 3

4 Glory to God

Opening Prayer Presiding Minister: Let us pray Loving Creator, you spoke a word and light appeared in the darkness. We pray that you would speak to us now, that your word may again illumine our lives and our world. May the same power that separated night and flung billions of stars into place, ignite within us a desire to draw closer to you. Amen. Reading Genesis 1:1 2:4 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Blessing of the Animals Gathering Song & Mini-Meditation for Children Children are invited to come forward during the song. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia. Ask and it shall be given unto you; see and you shall find; knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, alleluia. After the mini-med children are invited to make origami animals. 5

Canticle of the Sun by St. Francis of Assisi 6 Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is Yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To You, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your name. Be praised, my Lord, through all Your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and You give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of You, Most High, he bears the likeness. Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens You have made them bright, precious and beautiful. Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which You give Your creatures sustenance. Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure. Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom You brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong. Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs. Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of You; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by You, Most High, they will be crowned. Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing Your most holy will. The second death can do no harm to them. Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve Him with great humility.

Gospel John 1:1-14 The Holy Gospel according to... Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Hymn of the Day "Morning Has Broken" Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word! Sermon Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where God's feet pass. Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning, born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise ev'ry morning, God's recreation of the new day! Blessing of Youth Gathering Participants Prayers of Intercession Meal Let us pray. Have mercy, O God Offertory Children come forward with origami animals which are placed on the limbs of the cross symbolizing how Jesus restores all creation Offering baskets are distributed and brought forward Bread and wine are carried forward 7

Offering Prayer Assisting Minister: Let us pray Loving Creator, our hunger is never better satisfied than at your table. Our gifts can have no higher value than when they are offered to you. Because you fill our spirits, we hunger to serve. And we pray that these gifts may benefit the world. Amen. Dialogue Presiding minister greets the assembly and invites all present to give thanks. The Spirit of God be with you. And also with you. Lift your hearts to heaven where Christ in glory reigns. Let us give thanks to God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Preface Presiding Minister: It is indeed right... and join their unending hymn... Holy Holy You Are Holy (sung as a round) 8

Eucharistic Prayer: For a tree to flower and bear fruit it must be planted in the proper soil, showered with water, and warmed with the sun. We, who want to fulfill the will of our Creator, seek the solid ground of God, 9

the living water of Jesus Christ and the radiant light of the Holy Spirit. In the night in which he was betrayed......do this for the remembrance of me. Send your Spirit upon us and this meal, that we might be nourished by the mystery of your grace. Amen. Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Invitation to Communion Christ invites you to a place of honor at this banquet. Welcome to the feast. Communion Please come forward as the ushers direct. You will be given bread. You may eat the bread and drink; or intinct (dip) in the large cup and eat. The silver cup has wine; the oversize pottery cup has grape juice. Pastor has gluten free wafers if you need, just ask. After you commune, feel free to kneel at the altar rail in silent prayer. 10

Communion Songs Refrain "As the Grains of Wheat" As the grains of wheat once scattered on the hill were gathered into one to become our bread; so may all your people from all the ends of earth be gathered into one in you. As this cup of blessing is shared within our midst, may we share the presence of your love. Refrain Let this be a foretaste of all that is to come when all creation shares this feast with you. Refrain "God the Sculptor of the Mountains" 11

The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. Prayer after Communion Assisting Minister: Let us pray We affirm the goodness of life and the openness of the future because our God is a God of life and love. As God comes to us in this act of communion with one another, let us go out to others in Jesus name. May our every prayer be an action that brings healing, reconciliation and hope to a broken and hurting world. Amen. Sending Blessing Presiding Minister: God's beauty is found in the world around us! As you go this week, chase beauty. When you find it, share it with those around you. In your homes, your work, your schools and your neighborhoods, be a bearer of light, hope and peace. Go now in the peace of God. Amen.

Sending Hymn "Let My Heart Be Good Soil" Dismissal Assisting Minister: Go in peace. Live in love, as Christ loved us. Thanks be to God. Alleluia. Service is from Sundays and Seasons.com.
