1 Please read our newsletter A Heap of information is enclosed.!!!!!! Last week I attended the Year 5 camp at Daradgee. The students participated in a range of activities over the two days including rock wall climbing, low ropes as well as pizza making. One of the activities, called Bouldering, required the children to try to get their group across a ten metre cement area using blocks to step on. They weren t allowed to touch the cement and at all times someone had to be touching each of the blocks as they were being placed out. The skill was difficult and it required lots of cooperation and persistence. A few of the children did succeed in getting across but for most they got very close. What I was pleased about was that I didn t hear any putdowns or blame being put onto others as the blocks were being lost. The camp was a great learning experience and I would like to congratulate the students on their efforts over the two days. The children displayed tremendous leadership qualities and their behaviour was excellent. I would like to thank the parents Mrs Berge, Mrs Quagliata and Mr Papadimitriou for their assistance and Miss Gaffney who managed to organise her first school camp. Well done! Under 8 s Day Last Tuesday the children from Prep to Year 2 participated in an under 8 s day at the school. Throughout the day there were a range of activities for the children to choose and I think most students managed to get through all of the activities. It was very pleasing to see lots of cooperative play taking place. Thank you to the parents and teachers who assisted. Sport Over the weekend Aiden Porter, Nicholas Andrews, Brady Jones, Layne Bennett, Monique Sichter and Jasmine Sichter represented District at the Peninsula Football (Soccer) trials. All students tried very hard. Congratulations to Layne who was selected in a training squad. The Peninsula team will be selected from this squad. I would like to wish her all the best with this. First Eucharist/ Confirmation This week the following students from St Clare s will be making their Confirmation as well as their First Eucharist: James Brescansin, Jacob Briggs, Anthony Cook, Zane Crema, Tehgan Gee, Fiona Giblin, Julia Gilbert, Darcie Griffin, Cienna Haines, Madelyn Jones, Charlotte Mackay, Ethan Radel and Stephanie Sutton. On Wednesday evening Bishop James will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with them while on Sunday they will make their First Eucharist at the Sunday Eucharistic celebration. I would like to wish them and all of the other candidates from our Parish all the best as they take this important step in their personal faith journey. TERM 2 WEEK 7 3rd June, 2014 School Information System Throughout next term we will be upgrading our computer system. This upgrade will include the following suite of products: eminerva student and family information management Dynamics AX financial management SRS student reporting system Business Intelligence (BI) reporting tool SharePoint school portals The upgrade will take place in all Catholic schools within the Cairns diocese as Catholic Education Services will be moving to an enterprise information management model. In preparation for the conversion process we need to update our student records base to enable a smooth transition into the new software. A letter is being sent home today with various forms which need to be completed. I would ask that these forms are returned by Tuesday 10th June so that all of the data can be checked as part of the rollover. Playgroup The Playgroup meets each Friday from 9:30am in the Good Samaritan room. It is open to any children who have not started school. The playgroup is seeking donations of toys suitable for children under 5. If you are able to assist please leave them at the office.. 2 From the APRE s Desk Welcome*** Community *** Hospitality*** Welcome The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity and undoubtedly the least understood member. Christians can easily identify with God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit, however, without a body and a personal name, seems distant to many, yet it dwells inside every true believer and is a constant companion in the walk of faith. This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost, the day that symbolises the end of Easter. On this day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, a gift from God to all people, completing the trinity in our everyday lives. Pope Francis said the Holy Spirit is the strength of God; it s what gives us the strength to go forward, pushing us along a path of faith. Are you feeling tired? Are you tired of feeling tired? Are you feeling drained? And I don t mean physically, I mean emotionally. Do you feel like you are carrying the weight of the world and others on your shoulders? Are you tired of just holding things together? If you said yes to any of these questions or know of someone who is feeling this way please give some thought to coming along to Christine Coop s Emotional Energy Workshop being held on Tuesday the 24th of June commencing at 6pm at St Clare s School Arts Centre. Christine Coop will be hosting a Thrive, Not Just Survive workshop titled Emotional Energy. It will run for around three hours with a cuppa and dessert interval. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Community Over the next two weeks we celebrate the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion with candidates and their families who have been preparing to receive these Holy Gifts over the past few months. It is a wonderful celebration of faith, community and God s presence.the sacramental candidates I see at school are very excited and it s celebrations like these that reaffirm and nurture their faith journey and friendship with Jesus. We are so very blessed to have such an active Parish. SEL STUDENT OF THE WEEK TERM TWO WEEK 6 We would also like to thank Ms Sima, Year 1 and Prep classes who recently held their class liturgy. Thank-you also to Fr Michael for presiding and those parents who attended. This Thursday at 10am, the Year 5 class are hosting a mass in the church to celebrate Pentecost. Please feel very welcome to come along and celebrate with us. Recently the staff at St Clare s held an Australia s Biggest Morning Tea, raising a whopping $354. Thank-you everyone and thankyou to Mrs Andrews and Mrs Borgna (the hostess with the mostest) for organising this event. A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to our Year 6/7 Stewardship Team. Recently, Australian Teaching Magazine approached the team to run a story on their Farmer Friday Fundraiser held last term. 80% of Queensland has now been drought declared. 3 On Wednesday 11th June, Lauren Mayfield, Speech Language Pathologist from CES and Helen Andrews will present an in-service for parents on oral language and literacy development. This is an opportunity to learn skills and strategies to support your child s learning at home. The session will be targeting early literacy skills and will offer very practical strategies on how to help your children at home. The topics to be covered include: Components of Oral Language - what is meant by oral language difference between speech and language. Phonological Awareness what it is and how important it is for your child s literacy development. Year Five Camp was EXCELLENT!!! We got to do lots of challenges and meet Roxanne the Python. We made whole grain pizzas and discovered we liked lots of different types of vegetables. We got to see chickens hatch, hold the new baby chickens and turkeys and got to play with two cute bull terrier puppies. The Mohawk walk was very difficult and we discovered that we can work very well as a team. Overall the experience was very fun and interesting.
