1 St Mary s School Warwick Newsletter 13 th July 2017 Term 3 Week 1 Dear Parents/Caregivers Welcome back to Term 3!!!!! 3 CATHOLIC EDUCATION FRIDAY, 28 TH JULY PUPIL FREE DAY Bishop s In-service Day in Toowoomba for all Staff Last week officially was NAIDOC Week. In the past, our school community has celebrated this in the last week of Term 2. However, with our athletics carnival and Life Education, we decided to acknowledge and celebrate our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage this week. A series of activities for all students to participate in will be held at the Upper Campus from 9am to 11am (please see more information further in this newsletter). A special liturgy will be held in the MacKillop Centre commencing at All members of our school and parish community are invited to this special celebration. Prayer of the Aboriginal People God of all, You gave us the Dreaming. You have spoken to us through our beliefs. You then made your love clear to us in the person of Jesus. We thank you for your care. You own us, you are our Hope. Make us strong as we face the problems of change. We ask you to help the people of Australia to listen to us and respect our culture. Make the knowledge of you grow strong in all people, so that you can be at home in us and we can make a home for everyone in our land. Amen Important for next week Monday, 17 th July School Assembly 2.00pm Led by 1B Tuesday, 18 th July Parent Information Meeting Sacrament of 1st Eucharist 7.00pm 8.00pm Wednesday, 19 th July School Board Meeting 6.00pm Thursday, 20 th July P&F Meeting 7.00pm Friday, 21 st July Parish Mass 9.00am Year 5 to attend (Art and Story by Peter Muraay Djeripi Mulcahy) Our school motto is Seek the Truth. These words refer to the need to have knowledge before believing you have understanding. This understanding leads to empathy and respect and finally into the beginnings of knowing. Seeking the truth, requires us to be humble and discerning, while we search through our lives and look to match the truth in our hearts with all that we meet each day. Truth is everywhere, as is the Creator through His creation. The artwork has been commissioned for St Mary s School and its story can be found in our student diary. Please take the time to read this and reflect on this beautiful piece of Aboriginal art work and its connection to our school. Have a lovely week. 3 Reading Throughout this term, our Prep to Year 4 teachers will be released to participate in professional development on Reading. The Diocesan strategy Successful Readers by design, not chance will be rolled out to all schools this week. On Wednesday of this week, our Prep, Year One and Year Two teachers began their professional development. What are the important components of an early literacy program? As a parent, it is useful to understand how children learn to read and what the research tells us about successful reading instruction. We know that almost every child has the capacity to become a confident and competent reader with evident-based teaching and that parents can support this process in the home. Some of the strategies (for parents) that underpin an effective and evidence-based initial reading program include: Reading aloud to children often, sharing many different types of books and other print materials and discussing books with them before, during and after reading. Supporting children to analyse and sound out unfamiliar words rather than guess from pictures, the first letter(s) or the surrounding context; Supporting children with their irregular or tricky words they will see and read often, but that do not completely follow the letter-sound linkages that are being taught. Supporting children to recognise the shapes of the letters of the alphabet, the names of alphabet letters and, most importantly, the sound most often associated with each letter. More information can be found at: Administration Catholic Education Week Catholic Education Week will be celebrated in Week 3 of Term 3. On Monday, 24 th July, we will once again join with Assumption College in celebrating a Catholic Education Week Liturgy. This Liturgy will be held at 12.30pm in the MacKillop Centre and all parents are encouraged to join us. After the Liturgy, both schools will return to their respective campuses. On Thursday, 27 th July, Netball and Touch Football teams will compete in the annual Catholic Schools Carnivals in Toowoomba. Students have received some information regarding training for these events. THE BISHOP S INSERVICE DAY WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, 28 th JULY. This is a PUPIL FREE DAY.

4 Woolworths Earn & Learn Woolworths Earn & Learn program is happening once again this year. This will run from Wednesday, 26 th July until Tuesday, 19 th September. When you shop at Woolworths you can collect stickers to place on a sticker card. Once the sticker cards are completed they can be placed in a collection box at either St Mary s School or Woolies. When the program finishes all sticker cards will be sent to Woolworths for collation and they will let us know the number of points earned by our school to redeem on resources and equipment. In past years St Mary s School has received excellent resources thanks to the efforts of everyone collecting stickers. Thank You Our thanks to Hynes Newsagency for a cheque for $ This was for the Back to School promotion for 2016/17 run by Hynes Newsagency. These funds will be used for student resources. Tuckshop Roster Fri 14/7: Lauren Killen, Krystyna Petersen, Natalie & Veronique Sykes, Nicole Hutchinson Thurs 20/7: Fri 21/7: Rowena O Dea, Lisa Crothers, Danielle Lambert Katie Rutledge, Marie Curoopen, Kristy Walker, Katie Slater, Damien Young Library News Welcome back to Term 3 it s going to be hectic! Book Week, Book Fair, Premier s Reading Challenge are some of the happenings this term. Premier s Reading Challenge: This is a non-competitive reading event and is VOLUNTARY. If you would like your child to receive a certificate for reading from the Queensland Premier get a form from Mrs Brosnan or Mrs Kajewski at either library and fill it in. (You just have to read 20 books for Prep Year 4 students; 15 books for Year 5-9). Book Fair is coming in August. Dates and venue to be decided. Book Week is also in August. Dates and activities to be advised. If you have a spare hour or so, we would be happy to show you how to cover new library books. Please pop in to either campus library on a Thursday. (The contact we use here at school is very easy to work with.) Sport Futsal Over the course of Term 2 a large number of students from the Upper Campus participated in a lunchtime futsal competition held in the MacKillop Centre. The competition functioned much like the NRL, with teams firstly competing for points and then contesting through elimination finals. The sportsmanship that was shown by all teams was excellent and it was great to see such great team spirit. Although each team displayed great passion and determination, there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Alastair MacLachlan, Thomas Blake, Toby Usher, Matthew Spence, Corbin Amos, Eli Costello and Ben Carey who emerged victorious in the grand final. A special mention also needs to go out to Daniel Hughes and Fletcher Tate-Roche who filled in for the players who were away. Overall, the competition was a resounding success and everyone who participated can be proud of their efforts and the way they conducted themselves.
