1 Term 3, Week 1, 12th July, 2016 Principal s Message 2017 PREP ENROLMENTS NOW WELCOME Dear Parents & Carers, If you know of any family with a Prep age child for next year, can you please inform them that we are welcoming enrolments now. JULY 12 School Resumes 17 Canberra Trip Begins 22 Canberra Trip 25 Catholic Education 30 Week AUGUST 8 Ekka Public Holiday 12 Grandparents 29- Father s Day Stall 2nd SEPTEMBER 2 FETE 6 SCHOOL PHOTO S WELCOME BACK EVERYONE: I trust that you all enjoyed a happy and safe holiday. Welcome back to the new school term. This is School Fete term! As you have read in earlier correspondence, our annual School Fete will be held on Friday 2 nd September. Already throughout our school community there have been wonderful, generous people preparing for the big event, and this term we will see parents and children gaining excitement and enthusiasm as the day draws closer. The more people we have involved, the more successful our fete will be. Please keep watch in the newsletter for continued fete updates. I would like to wish the students in Year 5 and 6 well and also staff Elise Crawford, Justin McCarthy and myself, as we travel on Sunday morning to Sydney and Canberra for the week. There are many things to look forward to in the week, with the children visiting famous land marks, but I think most of all, we are looking forward to visiting the snow. I am sure there will be many stories to be shared when we return. This Friday, Miss Jessica Marshall will travel to Poland to participate in World Youth Day. Miss Marshall is part of a group of teachers from Brisbane Catholic Education who will represent our Archdiocese. This is a wonderful opportunity and we wish her all the best. Travel safe. We warmly welcome Mrs Michelle Baylis to the St. Joseph s Community as she replaces Miss Jessica Marshall in Year 5/6 for the next three weeks. During the last week of Term 2, we held our Parent Teacher interviews and it was great to see many of our parents attend these meetings. These meetings are a great opportunity to keep the lines of communication open, between school and home. If you were unable to attend these meetings and are interested in discussing your child s progress with their teacher, please call the office to make an interview time. Congratulations to Mrs Jenny Stower, on the birth of her second grandson Isaac Paul Suchoronczak. Congratulations also to the proud parents Morgan and Wink and little brother Ryan. May Christ s blessings be upon you all at this very happy time.
2 Principal's Message continued Jenny Stower has resigned from her position on staff to take up a full time position with Pursers Travel and Cruise. Jenny has been a very important staff member of St. Joseph s School for 17 and a half years. I would like to warmly thank Jenny for her hard work over the years as a Teacher Aide in the classroom, her much valued guidance with Girls Club, as our diligent Workplace Health and Safety Officer and over the past years as our Lollipop lady, keeping children safe on the crossing. Jenny your presence will be missed very much. Thank you for all you have done to support us. We wish you well in your new endeavour at Pursers Travel and Cruise. It is with sadness that we express our sympathy to the Peterson family, Leisa, Josh and Ella at the passing of Leisa s father Dudley Sippel. Please keep the Peterson family in your prayers at this sad time. Eternal rest grant onto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) Students from our school will soon be undertaking, an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian government is contributing funding of $66.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebates program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Have a great fortnight everyone, Greg Cran Principal Save the Date St. Joseph s Parish & School Fete 2016 Friday, 2nd September 5pm till late Stalls, Rides, School Performance, Chook Lotto, Cakes, Novelty, Craft and much much more
3 APRE Message Welcome back and I hope you had a wonderful holiday, filled with family fun and great memories. It is always exciting starting a new term and beginning a new phase of our learning journey. We ended the term knowing that our students had grown not only physically, but their social, emotional and cognitive growth was very evident. Our data has shown that through the dedication of our staff and students, the reading and writing levels have advanced. Our goal this term is to continue that growth and so we encourage parents to keep up the fantastic effort with home reading and homework tasks. Respect begins with me! We will continue our focus this term on respecting ourselves, others and our school. Mr Francis will focus this term on the long term effects of Bullying and how respectful behaviour can stop this from occurring. Being Catholic - Celebrating the Eucharist Catholics gather to celebrate the Eucharist, which means thanksgiving. This celebration is called Mass. The Eucharist is a sacred meal that calls to mind the life and death of Jesus. When Jesus celebrated the Jewish feast of Passover with his disciples on the night before he died, he blessed the bread and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat, this is my body. At the end of the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to his disciples to drink, saying: Take and drink, this is my blood, which will be poured out for you. Then he said, Do this in memory of me. The sacred meal of the Eucharist calls to mind the life and death of Jesus and the sacrifice that was made for us. We commit as part of God s family to go forth and use our talents to make a difference in the lives of others and to serve God. Celebrations this term 15 th July Anointing Mass at Castra with Year 4 18 th July Assembly Prep 25 th July Catholic Education Week Liturgy Year 1 29 th July NAIDOC Liturgy Year 4 & 2 1 st August Assembly Year 4 8 th August Anointing Year 1 & 3 22 nd August Assembly Year 2 26 th August Anointing Mass Year 5/6 5 th September Assembly Year 5/6 9 th September Mass Year 5/6 & Prep TOGETHER AS ONE NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920 s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. We will be celebrating NAIDOC week on the 29 th July at 9:30. We will have a liturgy to celebrate the unity of many cultures within our school and to pay respect to the original inhabitants of the country. We will pray that we continue to live as one nation.
4 APRE News continued Isaiah 58:6-12 This is the sort of fast that pleases me; Remove the chains of injustice! Undo the ropes of the yoke! Let those who are oppressed go free, and break every yoke you encounter! Share your bread with those who are hungry, and shelter homeless poor people! Clothe those who are naked, and don t hide from the needs of your own flesh and blood! Do this, and your light will shine like the dawn and your healing will break forth like lightning! Your integrity will go before you, and the glory of the Living God will be your rear guard. Cry, and the Living God will answer; call, and God will say, I am here - provided you remove from your midst all oppression, finger pointing, and malicious talk! What s happening in Religious Education in the Classrooms. Prep - The students listen to and respond to stories about Jesus. They explore the scripture of the Good Samaritan.
