We pray that their labour and sacrifice may not be in vain, but that their spirit may live on in us and in generations to come. We pray that the liberty, truth and justice which they sought to preserve may be seen and known in all the nations upon earth. This we pray in the name of the one who gave his life for the sake of the world, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Asking for help We show this by: Doing what is right even if it is difficult Going ahead even when you feel like giving up Saying sorry and owning up to your mistakes Trying new things ANZAC Day Thank you to the students and families who attended the Anzac Day ceremony in our local community on Tuesday. There were about 30 students, in their school uniforms, participating in the march and attending the ceremony. Several of our senior students had key roles, leading the prayer and raising the flag. Thank you to Henry, Stephanie, Elliot and Zavier. Thank you, also to our Head boy and Head girl, Riley and Perrie, for laying a wreath on behalf of our school. The students were amazing, marching with pride and listening with reverence. 2 MJR Morning Tea At the end of Term 1, I was fortunate to share a special morning tea with our four MJR Stars. We talked about lots of things, and I asked them to relate a word or phrase from their award, indicating the reason they received the award. The words and phrases included: friendly, kind, helpful, respectful, caring, a good role model, shows courage, compassionate, well-mannered and honest. What wonderful words to be written about our students who always strive to Make Jesus Real in their lives and in the way they interact with others. Kindergarten 2018 We are currently arranging interviews with new families of our Kindergarten class for If you already have a child at OLOL, but would still like to have a meeting for your Kindergarten child planning to start next year please contact the office. Easter Raffle Thank you to everyone who donated eggs and bought tickets for our Easter Raffle. Your generosity will help support Project Compassion, which is Caritas Australia s annual fundraising and awareness-raising appeal, bringing thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Over $1000 was raised through Project Compassion boxes and the sale of raffle tickets. First Holy Communion Preparation continues for our Year 4 students and their families, who will be attending meetings and sharing a meal in the next few weeks. Please pray for our students as they prepare to take this important step in their faith development. Sacramental celebrations will be held on Saturday and Sunday 20/21 May. Mother s Day Mass and Raffle On Friday 12 May we are having a Mass to celebrate Mothers in our community. All are welcome to attend at 9.00am in the Hall. Mass will be followed by morning tea, provided by our P&F. Parents will have an opportunity to look at pictures and poems, created by students, about their special Mums. The P&F are holding a Mother s Day Raffle with some beautiful prizes to raise funds towards their ongoing support of our school activities. First prize is a stunning quilt, created by our talented staff. Many staff made several blocks using their creativity and skill, and then all the blocks combined to make the end result. There are lots of other prizes as well. Tickets will be on sale mornings and afternoons outside the office from Monday for $5.00 each. Astronomy Night In the last week of Term 1, our Science specialist teacher, Mrs Heelan organised an Astronomy night for the Year 5 and 6 students and their families. It was a wonderful warm night, with clear skies and amazing viewing opportunities through telescopes. Favourites included the Moon, Jupiter and the Southern Cross. Thank you to Mrs Heelan, and for the parents and families who supported this extra-curricular learning opportunity. Fun Run Our Fun Run was held on the last day of Term 1. The weather was perfect and students from Kindergarten through to Year 6 participated in this event with enthusiasm, promoting a healthy lifestyle, healthy eating and building a spirit of community amongst the students, staff and parents. The coffee van was here and it was noted how many parents took the opportunity to run or walk a lap or two (or more!) with their children. We thank our P&F for arranging fruit platters for each class at the end of the Fun Run. Parent Information Evening presented by the Dyslexia Speld Foundation Thank you to all who attended, and thank you to our P&F for providing supper. This was a fabulous evening of learning for our parents, followed up by a day of learning by our staff. Please see your classroom teacher if you have any further questions. Nature Play The first Busy Bee was held on Saturday 22 April. Have a look at the play space that is starting to evolve, and make a plan to come and help out at the next Busy Bee. HUGE thanks to Vicki Noonan for her coordination, and to all who spent the day working hard to create Stage 1 mostly using donated materials. This was a great example of community participation in action, and makes us all so proud to be part of our OLOL community. Canteen Thank you to our canteen helpers who work so hard to provide healthy lunches for our students each Friday. Unfortunately, due to a lack of leaders, the canteen will be closed for at least the next month until we are able to find some more leaders to take on this significant role. At the moment, we only have one leader, and it is not feasible to run an effective canteen with only one leader. Please contact our P&F president, Yvette Duane, or the school office if you are prepared to be a canteen leader.

3 Image Permission From time to time, photos are taken of parents and others at school events such as our recent Fun Run and Busy Bees. Permission has been sought and granted for the use of any student images that are published in the school Newsletter or on the school managed Facebook page. If parents DO NOT consent for their photo to be used, please notify the school in writing. Thank you. Facebook Just a reminder that our school-managed Facebook page is a fantastic way to keep up to date with school happenings. You don t have to be invited to be a member, anyone can search for Our Lady of Lourdes School Dardanup and have access to view our school events. The purpose of our school page is to communicate, celebrate, inform and remind. Only the school Leadership Team, myself and the Assistant Principals, can post anything. If you want to make sure you see new posts in your news feed, ensure you have liked the page; then make sure you go to the Following drop down menu and select See First in your News Feed. Also under Notifications, make sure the All On has a tick next to it. Thank you for your ongoing assistance. New School Entry Statement You may have noticed this as you entered school this week. Thank you to our Board Chairman, Anthony Harris for his awesome design. Once it is completed, we will acknowledge and thank all who contributed. P&F Meeting Next Thursday 4th May is our first P&F meeting for the term. It is to be held at 9.00am in the staff room. All are welcome to attend. School Sores Please be advised that we have been made aware there has been a case of school sores diagnosed within our community. For further information on Impetigo please visit Articles/F_I/Impetigo-school-sores. Winter Uniform Just a reminder that as per our uniform policy, winter uniform is to be worn in terms 2 and 3. This includes long pants for boys and black leather school shoes for all students. Have a wonderful week. May God bless you Mrs Angela Hegney Principal Gabrielle s Biggest Morning Tea In 2010 the Our Lady of Lourdes school community lost Gabrielle Bertola to cancer. For several years now Gabrielle s close friends have held annual WA Cancer Council Biggest Morning Teas in honour of Gabrielle and to raise much needed funds for WA cancer research. Gabrielle was a beautiful wife, mother to three lovely children, sister, daughter and friend. Gabrielle gave great passion to all she did in the community in very many ways. Gabrielle was especially active in the school community and parish. Today there is a garden seat donated by Gabrielle s family which has been placed in the school grounds in her memory. Gabrielle s Biggest Morning Teas never fail to bring together all those Gabrielle touched and those who never had the honour of meeting her. They epitomise what Gabrielle stood for; friendships, generosity, humility and graciousness. All members of the community are warmly invited to join us in this worthy cause.

Many of us can relate to Thomas s response to the news that the disciples had seen Jesus. We want to see for ourselves too, but we grow in faith, trusting the experience and knowledge of others. Many of us have heard the saying Seeing is believing. As your family gathers, take some time to consider what that saying means. What are some things we believe because we see them? Is there anything we believe without seeing? Today s Gospel reminds us that faith sometimes asks us to believe things we cannot see with our eyes. Read today s Gospel, John 19:19-31, with your family. Think about Thomas s response to the reports about the risen Lord. Is Thomas s doubt reasonable? How does Jesus respond to Thomas? Jesus grants Thomas the evidence that Thomas needs to believe, but Jesus also affirms the faith of those who will be called upon to believe without first-hand experience. 7 Lord God, As we reflect on the journey your Son made to his Resurrection, help us to think how we might make the journey with him in our families, our schools, classrooms, communities and in our own lives. Help us to see that the difficulties we face and overcome in our lives can only bring us closer to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord, AMEN
