1 18-26 Church Street Gympie QLD 4570 Subscribe: Phone: Fax: May 20 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Congratulations the students who received the Encouragement Awards for Week 3. Your efforts and work are a great example for us all. Class Newsletters All parents should have received their child s Term 2 Class Newsletter by now. The purpose of these Newsletters is give parents an overview of the curriculum being covered during the term, as well as information about other important class routines and events. Because of the nature of our report cards, these class letters are also very important in helping parents read and understand the report cards issued at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. The language used in the letters in relation each subject area reflects the content of the Curriculum and assists parents in understanding what is being covered in class during the term. The report cards can be read in this context, along with information from parent teacher interviews and folios of student work. As always, if you require further information about the curriculum, or other class matters relating your child, please contact your child s teacher. Federal Government changes create uncertainty for school funding (Message from Brisbane Catholic Education) Over the last week you will have heard significant discussion in the media about school funding and its potential impact on Catholic schools in particular. The Catholic education secr is concerned the Federal Government has, date, been unable provide the necessary detail allay concerns about potential funding changes. We remain committed a funding system that is fair, needs-based and transparent. While the package as announced includes a base funding increase beyond what had previously been proposed by the Federal Government, it also alludes a number of changes the existing funding system which may impact on the overall level of funding Catholic schools. We are confident, however, based on the Minister s comments, that there will be no reduction in the quantum of funding Brisbane Catholic Education. Some key points of concern include: The absolute failure of the Federal Government consult with the Catholic secr before announcing its proposed changes. The lack of detail and so a heightened sense of uncertainty about our future funding position. Proposed changes the funding model which will potentially alter the way in which government funding is allocated and which may therefore impact on our funding levels. The Catholic education secr has urged the Federal Government urgently meet Catholic education representatives provide more detail about how the proposed changes will impact on schools, teachers and parents and negotiate a fair and acceptable outcome. We will provide further information as it becomes available. 1

Congratulations our St Patrick s Cross Country Award Recipients. Well done! I hope you have an enjoyable week at St Patrick s and please feel free approach me if you need more information about any of these subjects mentioned in the newsletter or for any assistance you may require. Peter Campbell Acting Principal St Patrick's Primary School Church St Gympie Q 4570 (W) (M) pcampbell@bne.catholic.edu.au RELIGIOUS LIFE OF THE SCHOOL and OTHER ADMINISTRATION MATTERS Religious Life of the School This Sunday we celebrate Mother s Day. A day when we reflect and celebrate the wonder, miracle, and gift our mothers are each of us. They teach and nurture us on our path, by offering wisdom, example and advice. They pick us up when we fall and unconditionally love us when we are loveable and when we are occasionally not. There is no one like a mother, no substitute for her place, no equal her love. To all of the mothers and mother figures, those who are with us and those who have gone, leaving their memory engraved on our hearts forever, know that you are needed, appreciated and loved, now and always. Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honour them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen Religious Education Religious Education is a Key Learning Area at St Patrick s. The Religious Education Curriculum (Archdiocese of Brisbane) being implemented at St Patrick s, is organised across four strands. The four strands of the Religion Curriculum are Sacred Texts, Beliefs, Church and Christian Life. The following provides information about the Religious Education pics all year levels are focussing on this term. If you would like more information about any of the pics being covered, please feel free approach your child s teacher or me. Prep: How can we know about God? Creation Sry. Students explore how the world was created. If Creation was at the beginning, where would we find that sry in the Bible? Students explore the sry of Creation in Genesis 1 and engage in literacy activities and drama activities. Students can make connection how Jewish people remember the sry day through Shabbat. How can we know about God? Joseph and David. What are the sries that we share in our school community? We are a Catholic school so we share sries from the Bible. The sries in the Bible tell us what God is like. Students explore the sries of Joseph and David in the Old Testament and share how these sries of family help us know what God was like then and is like for me day. Year 1: How can the Sacraments help us know what God is like? The children will explore how the sry of Jesus is continued day in our school and parish communities. Why are Sacraments important the community of believers and how is God present us in the Sacraments of Eucharist and Baptism and through the school and parish community? The children will gain insights in the life and teaching of Jesus as seen in the scripture sries e.g. baptism of Jesus and the Last Supper. Year 2: What do the sries of Jesus mean our community day? The students will identify the teachings and actions of Jesus in New Testament texts and how the mission and ministry of Jesus brings about the Kingdom of God. By comparing different texts and understanding the three worlds of the texts they will explore the life and times of Jesus. They will make connections the way people live in the Church community day. Year 3: How is the life and message of Jesus remembered in the Sacraments of the Church? The Sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation remember key sries in the life of Jesus, e.g. Jesus baptism, the Last Supper and Pentecost. The students explore the sights, sounds and actions of the Sacraments of Initiation. Through the Sacraments of Initiation people are welcomed and strengthened in the Church community. Members of the Parish 2
3 and the Diocese support the Sacraments in the local Church community. Year 4: How Can Relationships Heal our World? The students will explore and explain how free choice results in actions that affect the individual and their community. They will investigate how the messages and actions of Jesus are lived in the church community day and understand how the Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Penance are practised within the parish community day. Year 5: How can the Holy Spirit move my world? The action of the Holy Spirit is described in scripture using a variety of titles. The Sacrament of Confirmation remembers the action of the Holy Spirit words, symbols and actions. Gifts and fruits of the Spirit and the action of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. Year 6: How does the Australian Church Continue the New Law of Jesus? The students will explore the significance of Jesus New Law for the way believers live their faith. Jesus law is a law of grace, of love, and of freedom. The Spiritual and Corporal works of mercy are foundational the Church s teaching about concern for the common good.
