1 7 Randolph Street,GRACEVILLE,QLD,4075,Australia Phone: Website: Fax: From The APRE Welcome Back Trudy This week we welcome Trudy back to CTK. She had the chance yesterday to share some of her stories with the staff who found them both interesting and thought provoking. Spiritual and personal development allow us an opportunity to enliven our souls and bodies and it is wonderful to see Trudy back safe and refreshed. The Einstein Factor I think all parents need to channel the Einstein Factor. Inventor Albert Einstein maintained that he was no smarter than anyone else, he just stayed on problems longer than most people. We all want instant results in whatever we do. Parenting is no different! It s hard when the results don t come. But you ve got to keep on doing the right things, and making the best choices for your kids. In other words, bring the Einstein factor into your parenting. To help do this: 1.Get support and feedback from your partner, or a colleague. Feedback fires you up. 2.Keep building your skills and knowledge that will help your kids be successful or overcome individual challenges. Kids get lifelong learning from parents, more than school. 3.Be around people who fire you up, and energise you. It s no coincidence that great parents hang out together. Support keeps you grounded. A former parenting mentor used to say, Small hinges swing big doors. He meant that it s the little things done on a regular basis by parents that make the biggest difference to kids. You ve just got to choose the right actions and keep doing them.day after day. And have faith that the results will come..eventually!
2 Year of Mercy Pope Francis has declared 2016 as an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. This year s motto is, Merciful Like the Father. Pope Benedict XVI wrote, Mercy is in reality the core of the Gospel message. Everything that the Church says and does shows that God has mercy for man. So how can mercy be taught to children? By getting them used to the stories of the Gospel and to the parables. By talking with them, and above all by having them experience mercy. By helping them understand that in life we sometimes make mistakes and fall but that the important thing is to always get back up. By teaching them to look beyond actions to the person. If another child calls your kid a name during recess, encourage your child to think about what that child may have been experiencing. Maybe that child was upset he was being left out. Perhaps the child was upset because of problems in his family. When children learn to look at the person instead of just the action, they are more likely to respond with compassion and forgiveness. ANZAC Prayer Assembly The children experienced a moving ANZAC prayer assembly last Friday. We were also visited by some returned servicemen and women who spoke to the Year 3 students about their experiences. They were very impressed with the thoughtful questions that the students asked. Thanks to Matt Conway from Sherwood Returned Services Club for organising a display in the library and for assisting with the liturgy. School/Parish Mass The next School/Parish Mass will be held on Pentecost Sunday (May 15.) commencing at 9.30am. Pentecost is a Christian observance commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus Christ's disciples, according to the Bible. Our students will be assisting with the music. All welcome! Around The School School Banking Welcome Mrs KymGunn to the role of Student Banking Co ordinator. Reading Comprehension Strategies Reading comprehension strategies have contributed to many discussions across classes this term. While these skills are taught specifically and individually targeted they are used together in order to gain understanding of a piece of text. Book Clubs are a great example of how reading comprehension strategies come into play in a social environment which builds an enjoyment and love of reading as well as developing understanding. Home reading can be like a mini book club. Rich discussions focussing on reading strategies can take place and understanding can be developed through questioning, clarifying and articulating thoughts. Begin with asking what the book may be about. What clues are given to the reader? Does the title give a big insight into the story? Much can be said before opening the cover. If it s a chapter a qui9ck summary of events could be in order.
3 Asking readers how they arrived at an answer is just as important as the answer itself. Finding evidence within a text supports comprehension demonstrates thinking and helps to make connections or links to a broad context. Identifying Author s Purpose Questions about author s purpose ask you why the author wrote the passage. Most authors write for one of these reasons: to persuade (make someone want to do something), to give information, to describe or to entertain. You can remember these four reasons by remembering P.I.E. P for persuade, I for information and E for entertain. Library News The library has been buzzing with the sound of children coding again this week. It s been interesting to note that after some experience last week many students are taking on new challenges faster. When I asked one child who was coding using Lego, How did you do that so fast? She replied: I just applied the things I learnt last week on the coding program. What a great response to demonstrate the skills students are learning. Next week the library will hold the annual Monster Book Fair. Come along and peruse the range of books that we have for sale. All proceeds go to the CTK library. IlleseSmithwick

Any size, any brand, any number. Last year the CTK community made a difference by donating over 1500 nappies to this great cause, let's see if we can do it again. A collection box will be at the CTK office until Thursday 19th May for any donations you may have. The nappies do not have to be in the original packaging, but they do need to be clean. A handful of leftover nappies may not seem like much, but every single donation will help another mum and child. This is a very practical, simple and effective way that we can all make a difference to families in need, so please, clear out your cupboards, or add a pack of nappies to your supermarket trolley (newborn and crawler are the most needed sizes). For more information visit or see Miss Cunningham. Thank you.
