Amen Why We Celebrate ANZAC Day Anzac Day falls on April 25 each year and marks the anniversary of the landing by Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey in This was the first significant military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The Anzacs were the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. They were formed in Egypt and fought under overall British command. Unlike most European armies at the time, the force was made up of volunteers. The day now serves as a remembrance in Australia for troops that served in all wars; it is also observed in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga and Pitcairn Islands, and was once a national holiday in Papua New Guinea and Samoa. TERM SCHOOL REOPENS 31 JANJUARY 2018 SCHOOL SUPERVISION TIMES 8.30am-3.40pm Supervision before school commences at 8.30am. Children should not arrive at school before this time. Students need to be at school by 8.45am for a 8.50am start. School finishes at 3.20pm. Teachers are on duty until 3.40pm. Students need to be collected by 3.40pm. The school has an Out of School Hours Care Program to assist parents who work or cannot make it to the school by 3.40pm. SCHOOL GATES Please note that, for the safety of your children, the school gates will be locked between 9.00am and 3.10pm every day. The gates will be opened around 2.20pm on a Friday for parents wishing to attend Assembly. The gates will be locked again from 3.40pm. Please ensure that you do not park at the back of the school after this time as you will be locked in. CANTEEN The canteen operates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please go to the school website for the current price list and ordering procedures. UNIFORM SHOP The Uniform Shop is open every Wednesday from 8.30am-10.00am in the Specialist Block. Uniforms can also be purchased directly from our suppliers, KLAD Sports (8 Macro Court, Rowville ). Good quality secondhand uniforms are also available. Please enquire at the school office.

2 Page 2 SPAN News Term 2 Issue 1 For Australia, the landing at Gallipoli and subsequent battle were both a tragedy and a source of great national pride. The attempt to capture the Gallipoli peninsula and quickly defeat the Turks ultimately failed. Australia lost 8,141 soldiers during a bloody and eventually hopeless campaign that lasted eight months before ending in a stalemate. But the Anzac forces won great admiration for their bravery; at the time, Australia had been a nation for just fourteen years. The campaign subsequently became recognised as a turning point in Australian identity. In 1916 the anniversary was celebrated unofficially, with the day being recognised as a public holiday in Australia from In subsequent decades, the fighting at Gallipoli increasingly took on a symbolic status. After months of preparation our students took part in a very reverend celebration on Tuesday evening. These same children and their parents now begin the next step as they enrol for the Sacrament of Eucharist which will be celebrated on the weekends of May 2 nd and 3 rd and May 9 th and 10 th. We ask you to keep these children and their families in your prayers.

3 Page 3 SPAN News Term 2 Issue 1 STUDENT WELLBEING Respect in Relationships Respect is an important foundation for healthy relationships. Learn more about what it is, how to be respectful and where to get support. The relationships we have in our lives impact us in so many ways. It s essential that we try to have healthy, respectful relationships with others. It s a huge part of our lives and can affect our wellbeing and mental health. There will always be differences between you and other people- being respectful means you accept them for who they are and vice versa. Conflict is part of life and friendships- you won t always agree with somebody else s decisions or beliefs, but knowing how to respectfully disagree is a skill you can learn. Showing respect for others in different ways. To have healthy, respectful relationships, you need to know what respectful behaviour looks like. Below are some examples of how to show respect to others. Try asking yourself- do the important people in your life behave this way towards you? (

4 Page 4 SPAN News Term 2 Issue 1 COMMUNITY NEWS School Attendance - Unexplained Student Absences A review of the Victorian Government s School Attendance Guidelines was completed at the end of 2017 in response to a critical incident that occurred when a student climbed back in to their parent s car at school drop off without their knowledge. This review resulted in amendments to the Attendance Guidelines which now require all schools to: Make immediate contact with parents/guardians, as soon as is practical, on the same day of an unexplained absence. Make all reasonable attempts to identify the whereabouts and safety of all students who are absent. Request that parents/guardians provide a written explanation for all absences. Unexplained Absences are defined as a student s non-attendance at the school in which they are enrolled, where no notification or explanation for the absence has been provided by parents prior to the commencing of the school day. In accordance with the Part of the Victorian Education Act 2006, parents/guardians are required to ensure that their child attends school, during normal school hours every day of each term, unless: There is an explained absence such as illness, appointments, bereavement, family holidays etc. There is an approved exemption from school attendance or enrolment for the student; The child is registered for home schooling and is only partially enrolled for particular activities. From the commencement of Term Two 2018: Parents/guardians are responsible for contacting the school on that day of an expected absence to inform them and to provide an explanation for their absence.

5 Page 5 SPAN News Term 2 Issue 1 This must be done prior to the commencement of the school day. This may be done by contacting the school on (03) directly, by leaving a message on the school answering machine, admin@spanhills.catholic.edu.au. Where an unexplained absence is identified the school will: Make all reasonable attempts to contact the parents/guardians that morning. This will in the first instance be done via a text message. Where no response is received by the parents/guardians that morning a subsequent phone call will be made to seek an explanation. In the event that contact cannot be made with the parents/guardians the school will attempt to communicate with emergency contact/s nominated on the student s file. Where there is no response and there are concerns for the safety and welfare of the student contact may be made with Victoria Police (000). To ensure the safety and welfare of all students attending St Paul Apostle North Primary School, we remind all parents/guardians of their obligation to make contact with the school to provide an explanation on the morning of an expected absence with a written explanation provided upon their child s return to school.
