1 DATE CLAIMERS 5 Apr Term 1 concludes 23 Apr Term 2 commences 23 Apr yrs Field Events 26 Apr P-6 yrs Track Events THE GRAPEVINE Term 1 Week 9 28 March 2019 We Remember We are coming into the serious end of Lent, when the story of Jesus s death and resurrection will be retold and even re-enacted in our churches and our schools. This is a good time to pause and wonder why we do this. As one little boy said, when preparation for the school s Passion Play began, But we did that one last year! We remember not because we have forgotten the story, but rather to remind ourselves that this story of salvation is to have an impact on our lives and we are different people to who we were last year. Ask yourself how you have changed. What have you learnt? What do you need to learn? In the Gospel, we hear stories that, if we allow them, will give light to our hearts and show us how to relate to God. The Passion Story focuses not so much on Jesus suffering, as on the reaction of people to Jesus. As we experience the Passion Story in the coming weeks, we should ask ourselves who do we relate to: the faithful women?, the frightened apostles?, cowardly Peter?, the man forced to carry Jesus cross? Most likely we relate to different ones in the different aspects of our lives. As you recognise yourself in this year s remembering, ask Jesus for the wisdom to enter more deeply into the mystery of God s love in your life. Loving God, change is such a part of our lives and at times we struggle to make sense of ourselves. As we hear of Jesus love through suffering and death, may we learn how to make love the cornerstone of our lives. We ask this in his name confident that you will hear us. Sr Kym Harris osb Reconciliation Children with surnames N-Z are asked to attend Reconciliation this Saturday evening from 5:00pm to receive the sacrament for the first time. Children will receive their Act of Contrition card at the church when they register. Reconciliation will be followed by mass at 6:00pm. Thank you to those families who participated in these sessions. Preparation for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist will commence next term. The Season of Lent Project Compassion - Week 4 Michaela from Australia Michaela is a 21-year-old trainee at Purple House, a dialysis center in the Central Desert for people suffering from kidney disease. With the support of Caritas partners, Michaela is helping to build a social enterprise, a connection to culture and a new outlook for the chronically ill. 2 STATIONS OF THE CROSS Easter Liturgies During the last week of school, classes will present the Stations of the Cross as we journey towards Easter. Liturgies will commence at approximately 8:50am each morning. A timetable of Stations is included below. Parents and friends of our St Benedict s community are invited to attend these liturgies. 3 Welcome This week we welcomed Mrs Sasha Bateman to the staff at St Benedict s as our new Administration Secretary. Sasha will work on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday while Lyn is on Long Service Leave. Welcome Sasha and we look forward to you sharing your expertise and experiences with us. Parent Teacher Interviews Our Term 1 parent and teacher interviews will be held on Monday 1 April (available from 3.30pm through to 7.45pm) and Tuesday 2 April (available from 3.30pm through to 5.30pm). The interviews are available for booking online by visiting the Sobs website at The online booking schedule will close tomorrow at 3:00pm. NAPLAN Online update Our students in Years 3 and 5 will be undertaking NAPLAN testing online in May this year for the first time. Moving NAPLAN online brings many advantages, including a test design that offers test items tailored to students knowledge and ability. We will also be participating in a national practice test on Wednesday 3 April. This is an excellent opportunity to fine tune any technical and logistical needs, as well as familiarise students and teachers with the online testing process. It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student results. Parents and caregivers of students in these NAPLAN year levels will need to be aware of important information relating to privacy, which can be found on the NAPLAN Online Queensland website s parent information page - ( Further information regarding the online testing program in May will be communicated in the upcoming weeks. 5 Term 1 Mathematics throughout the Grades In Prep we are introducing the concept of Partitioning. We have begun with a problem asking the students to show us 5 fingers. The task becomes more challenging when we ask them to show us 5 fingers using 2 hands. Many students immediately show 10 fingers. When we count to see that they have held up 10 fingers they are challenged to work out how to represent 5 fingers using two hands. It is wonderful to see their faces light up when they finally work out how to do it. Year One has been busy counting by twos. Our investigations saw us barefoot counting our shoes in pairs, matching socks and grouping blocks. We have just begun using our calculators to help us with our counting in twos. Please help us by counting the stairs in twos, the wheels on trucks and of course folding pairs of socks as they come out of the washing basket! Counting in twos has been fun! In Year 3 we had the challenge of designing and making any prism and a pyramid with different materials. We then had to describe all the feature we knew about out chosen 3D objects.
6 In Year 4 Maths we have been learning that 3D shapes have nets. We used this knowledge to create a net for a box to protect a biscuit we were sending through the mail. Most of our boxes protected our biscuits from the treacherous journey around our school in Mrs Hudson s library trolley, through the sprinkler and even saved the biscuit from a dictionary being dropped on it. We built some tough boxes! Year 5 have been investigating measuring perimeter in practical situations. We discovered the easiest way to measure around a curved surface is with string. We can then pull the string out and measure it. In Technology, students constructed a parachute to slow the descent of an egg dropped from 3 metres and prevent it from breaking. We have combined this task with a maths challenge. Students are measuring the distance of the egg drop. We are then calculating the average time it takes for the egg to fall and with this information working out how far the egg would fall in 1 second. The skills we are using are multiplication, division and measurement.
All Saints Day. Sr Kym Harris osb
All Saints Day Saints are an important part of Catholic life. Throughout the year, we remember and celebrate various men and women who have lived heroically good lives. They are placed before us as models
