1 Dear Parents As a Catholic School, we are a community, which celebrates our Catholic Story and traditions and recognises Christ is at the centre of our lives. On the night before he died, Jesus celebrated a special meal with his disciples. At this Passover meal they shared bread and wine together. Jesus told his disciples that from now on whenever they shared bread and wine together at a meal and remembered him, he would be with them. Last Sunday we celebrated the Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). This solemnity celebrates the gift and presence of the risen Lord with us in the Eucharist. Each time we come to Mass we remember what Jesus said and did, we share the bread, and wine that has become Jesus for us. God lavishes us with his love and abundant gifts so that we may share what we have received with others. When we pass on God s gifts to others, we are participating in the coming of the Kingdom. The Eucharist, which means thanks brings us together as a community and we express our unity as one with Christ through the eating and drinking together of the Body and Blood of Christ. The challenge for us is to be a joyful, faith-filled, celebrating and caring people who use our gifts to recognize the need in others and to share what we have. One of the virtues of Mary, our Mother was her willingness to give to others. The hospitality we extend to all, no matter who they are, is a reflection on our willingness to love God and one another. Every year at this time the Catholic Church together with their schools makes a special response in prayer and donation for the needs of others by supporting and promoting the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. This Appeal is an important initiative not only because it makes a real difference to the lives of people in need, but also provides a valuable opportunity for our students to continue to develop compassion for others and be active in their Parish community. A small community of generous, thoughtful people can make a huge contribution to those who are struggling and need a helping hand. Each classroom has a basket for the collection of goods for those in need. We thank you on behalf of the St Vincent de Paul society for the donations received so far. Please join us at the church on Friday at 9:30am. Deacon Tony will be leading a whole school Liturgy of the Word with Communion as we showcase our faith through our support for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Regards Jodie Our Vision: St Michael s is a catholic school community inspired by the life of Jesus. We are life-long learners and thinkers who have the courage to live our beliefs. Our Mission: St Michael s is a school called to serve the families of St Michael s Parish, Traralgon. We are committed to nurturing personal achievement in an environment where relationships are authentic and collaborative NEWSLETTER No. 16 DATE: 4 th June 2018 News from the Principal

Jesus and his disciples had gathered to celebrate the Passover together. Every year Jewish families and friends gathered together to share a meal which celebrated the Passover, when they remembered how God freed them from slavery in Egypt. The Jewish people still do this today. At the Last Supper, Jesus shared a loaf of bread and a cup of wine with his friends. He changed the bread and wine into his own body and blood, to nourish them with it s life giving power. Just as our bodies need nourishment to live, so do our souls. When we come to Mass, we come as one large family to celebrate something which happened for all of us: the resurrection of Jesus. We share a meal together just as Jesus did at the Last Supper Prep Enrolments Reminder to St Michael s Current Families: We ask all existing families with a child beginning Prep/Foundation in 2019 to collect an enrolment form from the School Office. Please return the completed enrolment application to the office with the Birth, Immunisation and Baptism Certificates to be copied. It would be appreciated if these could be returned as soon as possible as this will help us predict available places in the Prep classes for Child Safety Code of Conduct A copy of the St Michael s School Child Safety Code of Conduct is on the school app. It is a requirement that all volunteers and regular visitors to our school read this Child Safety Code of Conduct and acknowledge doing so by signing the last page. It would be appreciated if any existing or new families who have not returned their signed form to school to do so as soon as possible.

This practice is in line with child-safety practices and policies from the Catholic Education Office. All other times parents need to sign in at reception via the Ipad and wear a red visitor s lanyard. Working with Children Checks Volunteer help plays a major role in our school in supporting all students and strengthening a sense of community. In line with child-safety practices and policies from the Catholic Education Office every volunteer in the classroom or on excursions must have a current Working With Children Check. The checks are quite easy to do on line and if you are a volunteer the checks are free If you already have a WWCC and St Michael s School, Traralgon is not listed please go online and add our school to your card. Our school will then be notified of your wwcc renewal.
4 Education News The Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge is now open and St Michael s School is excited to be participating. Don t forget to check out the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge website as it has lots of information about the Challenge We have 37 students who have now signed up for the challenge. Debbie Gilmour in the school library is able to help with registration for students or any enquiries. 3/4 Visit from Mrs Burns Last Wednesday the 3/4 students were lucky to receive a visit from Mrs Burns who spoke about the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Mrs Burns-Community Helper. Mrs Burns came to St Michael s to talk to us about St Vincent de Paul. Her community group, St Vinnies, delivers food, cans, hampers and money. Mrs Burns job involves deliveries, donations and volunteering. The community group has been helping people in Traralgon for 80 years, but Mrs Burns has only been doing it for 18 years. When they collect the cans, they usually last 5 months. When the community has raised some money, they give it to the Melbourne St Vinnies and they send it out to all the centres. By Star. Mrs Burns-Community Helper. Mrs Burns came to St Michael s to talk about St Vincent de Paul. Mrs Burns talked about delivering food. She doesn t mind that she doesn t get paid at St Vincent de Paul. She d rather put smiles on people s faces. Mrs Burns has been working at St Vincent de Paul for 18 years. St Vincent de Paul, Traralgon has been open for 80 years! Mrs Burns loves working at St Vincent de Paul. By Brilee. St Vincent De Paul. Today Mrs Burns came in to teach us all about St Vincent de Paul. Everyone learnt loads of new things. The people help the poor by giving lots of food and furniture. St Vinnies also helps people with bills, loans and more. Lots of people help the poor now. St Vincent De Paul has a symbol. The symbol is Christ giving and receiving. It is in the shape of three hands. Mrs Burns qualities are nice, caring, never selfish, thoughtful, generous and gives a lot of time to the poor. I will help change the poor people s lives by offering lots of items to them. By Hunter. Mrs Burns visited the class today. She talked to us about a charity called St Vincent de Paul. In 1833, in France, a guy named Frederic Ozenam came up with the idea for the charity. On his way to university he saw people dying from diseases and lots of homeless people were in need at that time.then a guy in Australia heard about this and decided it would be a good idea to do this in Australia. That s how it began. Three interesting qualities about Mrs Burns are; she always puts a smile on the people she helps, and that makes her happy. She is kind to put all her spare time into donating food to others and it makes her happy that she does. She is caring to volunteer to help others, so with that help they can have a happier life. The change I can make is donating more to people in need. By Ellie.
5 Sports News A.S.P.I.R.E leadership day On the 30th May 2018, 30 Grade 6 students represented St Michael s at the A.S.P.I.R.E leadership day, promoted by the Victorian Olympic Council. They met former Olympians who specialised in different sports, like volleyball, basketball, soccer, athletics and gymnastics. At each sport rotation, the groups learnt about the Olympic values, what they meant and what they meant as an Olympian. The purpose of the program was to learn the values so the children could use them in their everyday life. I enjoyed the soccer and learning about the ways I can express my individuality through sport (Elaina) I loved the gymnastics and learning about the individual responsibilities (Zahrarose) Lucas enjoyed the basketball and learning how respect is part of the sport, while Sid was enthusiastic about the track and field because he likes running and the way the athletes spoke about the ways you can show pride in yourself and your work. The Grade 6 students had a wonderful day and represented our school fantastically. They came back enthusiastic about sports knowing how their dedication and hard work is the key to success at any level. Pie Drive The St Michael's Pie Drive is back!! This year we will be partnering with Yarragon Country Style Bakery to offer a variety of yummy pies to warm you up this winter. Forms will be coming today, orders close Tuesday 12th June (plenty of time to get orders from your family and friends). Pies will be ready for collection Thursday 21st June.
