2 BLESSED TRINITY PARISH From Fr. Doug s Desk Our dogs have houses. Our cars have houses. Jesus said, If you seek perfection, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. After that, come back and follow me. Hearing this, the young man went away sad, for his possessions were many. (Mt 19:21,22) You can bet your bottom dollar that Pope Francis will say something like this when he comes to the United States next month. While many would be more interested in him speaking about topical issues like divorce and remarriage, abortion or gay marriage, you can be sure that Francis will spend the majority of his time talking about eradicating poverty in our world and closing the gap between the extremely wealthy, the rich and the poor. In other words, he will be talking to us, the rich, about sharing more with those less fortunate. We can forget how rich we, as North Americans, are. We have a roof over our heads. We have running water and electricity. Most do not. We are so well off, our dogs have houses, our cars have houses. To Pope Francis, this is scandalous; especially when one third of the world goes to bed hungry and homeless. Pope Francis has been popular with so many. This is partly due to his adherence to the Gospel values of Jesus. Early on in his papacy, maybe within the first two weeks he said two things which have continued to mark his papacy. The first went something like this; there is something wrong when the media gets more excited about the stock market going up two points than two children dying of hunger. The second was; there is more to following Jesus besides talking about abortion, contraception and gay marriage. As long as the pope did not say anything that affected us directly, he was popular. Lately, he has been talking more and more about the unequal distribution of wealth and the immorality of that. His encyclical on our global home captured the economic injustice that climate change provokes. (This was captured by the wealthy woman in California who said she was going to water her lawn all she wanted because she paid for it. It didn t matter to her that her neighbors could not flush toilets or get drinking water) Ordinary daily living has now become a political and economic football in our country. What is happening now in our country economically, is what has been going on in the world for decades. Americans constitute 5% of the world's popula- CLEVELAND, OH tion but consume 24% of the world's energy. The poorest 10% accounted for just 0.5% of the world s consumption of goods and the wealthiest 10% accounted for 59% of all consumption. When Pope Francis addresses our congress he will talk about the first. When he addresses the United Nations he will talk about the second. He will go home with less friends and more enemies. But he will still be right. Fifty years ago Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty. He recognized the government s duty to care for the most needy and least protected among us. It is rare to hear a politician talk about poverty in our country, yet 20% of the country lives in poverty, most of those being women and children. Pope Francis will call on us to take care of our own. He will ask us to take care of the rest of the world. When we say that we cannot, he will answer; how come you have enough to have houses for your dogs and your cars, but not for all God s people?
