2 The past two weeks we have been praying with Eucharistic Prayer IV. We will continue to do so until Advent. The Eucharistic Prayer (EP) begins with the Preface dialogue (The Lord be with you.lift up your hearts Let us give thanks to the Lord our God) and ends with the great Amen. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes an EP this way. Each EP has six parts: the Preface, the Epiclesis, Institution narrative, the Anamnesis the Intercessions and the Doxology. In the second EP, after the holy, holy, holy, there is one sentence. (You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness) In EP IV, that sentence is expanded for a whole page. This makes the fourth EP long, but it is also very beautiful. It is the most complete theologically as well. Let us take a look at this beautiful prayer we pray. In the Preface, this prayer speaks of God who is good, the source of all life, who fills his creatures with holiness. After we sing the holy, holy, it continues by praising God as Creator, who fashioned all things in wisdom and love; who formed us in God s image; who stuck by us when we lost God s friendship; who offered us a covenant over and over again; who taught us to hope for salvation. This part of the EP reaches its high point as it echoes John 3:16; you so loved the world, that in the fullness of time you sent your Son to be our Savior. The prayer then goes on to proclaim Jesus mission; to proclaim the good news of salvation to the poor; to prisoners freedom; to those in sorrow, joy; to die and rise for us and to send his Holy Spirit upon us to sanctify creation to the full. The epiclesis, the calling forth the Holy Spirit upon our gifts, follows. After that comes the institution narrative. Notice that the phrase words of consecration is no longer used in the catechism. The church seeks to emphasize the entire EP as an essential part of the prayer of the worshipping community. In effect, the church is teaching us that the whole EP makes the gifts holy. The next part of any EP is the anamnesis, the memorial. In other EPs, we simply remember Christ s death and resurrection. In EP IV is added his Ascension to your right hand and our awaiting his return in glory. These events complete the mission of Jesus of returning to his God and coming again in glory, which the other EPs omit. The intercessions follow. Interestingly enough, when the liturgy was first revised during Vatican II, a separate list of petitions, formally known as the universal prayer or general intercessions, was added after the homily. Many liturgists objected to this. They wanted the bishop or priest to be able to ad lib these intercessions within the Eucharistic prayer, following the general guidelines of the intercessions. Those who thought this would give the presider too much freedom won out. So now we have two sets of intercessions at Mass. If at times they seem redundant, it is because you are paying close attention! In the intercessions, we pray for those we celebrate the Eucharist, our hierarchy, those who believe but are unable to break bread this day and all those who seek God with a sincere heart. Looking to Mary, Joseph and the saints, the EP lifts us with these concluding words; there with the whole of creation freed from the corruption of sin and death, we shall give glory to our God who bestows on the world all that is good. 3 This week we salute Ginger Needham. Ginger is one of the beekeepers in our edible forest. She has participated in the parish renewal. She used to be a member of the choir. Recently her son, Andy was in a terrible traffic accident. Andy is fine, but his fiancé is in a coma. Please pray for her. We thank Ginger for her dedicated service to our parish. Nov 2 is All Souls Day. There will be a special Mass at 7pm remembering all those who have died this past year as well as their loved ones who still grieve. If you would like someone remembered who was not a parishioner, please contact the rectory at with your loved one s name. Please come and offer your prayerful support for them.
