DOUG S DESK More Theology and Art One of the things I enjoy doing this time of year is visiting the Mormon Headquarters in Kirtland just off of Rt This year s 14 th Annual Nativity Christmas Exhibit displays over 600 nativity sets from all over the world. If you have never been, I recommend it. It s worth a trip and it is free. Almost every evening there is a concert beginning at 7pm as well. There are many ways to view the exhibits. One thing I like to look at is, How are the people in the Nativity scene arranged? Most of the sets have a traditional placement of characters and animals. This is very unrealistic for one simple reason: no one is holding the baby Jesus! At every family get together someone always wants to hold the baby. So there is no way Jesus would be laying in a manger all by himself with all those adults around. They probably were fighting over the opportunity to hold him. Yet these images of the first Christmas are ingrained in our minds as facts. That is why art is so important. It communicates theology as well. One of my favorite Nativity scenes displayed at the Mormon museum is the one that has Joseph holding the baby Jesus. It depicts Joseph as a strong protector of Mary and Jesus, a take charge kind of guy. It is a nice way to picture Joseph in Jesus and Mary s life. There are many other fascinating images of the Nativity scene. In the one from El Salvador, the baby Jesus is the largest statue, bigger than Joseph or Mary or the shepherds or the astronomers. Why? Because Jesus is the most important. Therefore He should be the biggest. It makes sense in a theological kind of way. Another scene from Latin America depicts a more traditional manger scene surrounded by shepherds, Red Cross volunteers complete with an EMS vehicle, a military band, a soccer team, Girls Scouts, altar servers, and more. Why? Because Jesus came for everyone. In our church we have a statue of the Holy Family. I do not notice it very often but I was inclined to go take a closer look. I like it because it shows Joseph and Mary as a couple. They are together, not flanking Jesus on either side as in most manger scenes. They look like they are married. And yet Joseph looks a little forlorn. Maybe he is having doubts about the whole thing. Or maybe it is a lost in thought look. Lord knows he had plenty to think about in those first days. Mary is holding the baby and looking like a real person. She looks like she is ready to change a diaper. That is a plus too. It makes her a real person. When you get Christmas cards this Advent season, spend some time with the religious cards. How do they depict Jesus, Mary and Joseph? What does the artist want you to know about them? My favorite Christmas card is a print made from the painting Rest on the Flight into Egypt by Luc Olivier Merson. It depicts Mary in the lap of the Sphinx, her legs dangling from the dais the Sphinx rests on, her body sound asleep. She is half covered by a blanket. Jesus sleeps on her lap. There is no Joseph in the picture, but I still like it. I imagine him out hunting for food in the desert. So enjoy your Christmas art in this Advent season. May it bring you closer to our God. What to do contest. As you can see, the house next to Ascension Village has been demolished and the property will be deeded to Blessed Trinity. What should we do with the property?
