2 FROM FATHER DOUG S DESK St. Mary of Magdala Proclaiming the Resurrection (John 20:1-18) By Sr. Margaret Beaudette, SC, Viewers are invited to imagine their favorite disciples with Mary of Magdala. Allowing the identities of the disciples to emerge from the art was a rich experience for me; I hope it will be rewarding for you. Here is one interpretation. Main section: St. Mary of Magdala, commissioned by Jesus to proclaim the Resurrection, returned to the other disciples. Until she shares the news, she is the Church, the only one who knows of the Resurrection (America, April 1, 2013). Determined and dignified, she raises her left hand and reaches out with her right to proclaim the good news. Peter and his wife lean forward. His face reflects the agony of knowing he denied Jesus and left the tomb too soon (Jn 20:10) combined with his astonished joy. His wife, a disciple (1 Cor 9:5) and, later a martyr, (Clement of Alexandria, Miscellanies (Book VII) CE) reaches out for the great news and comforts Peter. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, (Mk 10:35) stand in awe. Mary of Jerusalem (Acts 12:12) stands next, an early disciple and a widow of means. Her face reflects the courage and firm faith required to host early church gatherings illegal under Roman rule. After escaping from prison, Peter went directly to her home... where many were gathered and were praying (Acts 12:1-12). Some scholars think she may have hosted the Council of Jerusalem in her upper room. Her son, John Mark, stands below and to her left, astonished, his hand on his face. He was a missionary with his cousin Barnabas and Paul (Acts 13:5, 2 Tim 4:11, Col 4:10). Barnabas, Mary of Jerusalem s nephew (Col 4:10) is beside her. He was the disciple who recruited Paul (Acts 11:22-30) for the mission to Antioch. Mary of Jerusalem, her son and nephew were clearly a faith-filled family. Zacchaeus (Lk 19:1-10) and the Samaritan woman (Jn 4:1-42) stand at the back, two outsiders of faith, listening, deeply alive to Jesus presence. They represent all of us who have engaged, questioned and believe. Lower right, kneeling left to right: First is Mary of Bethany, who prophetically anointed Jesus in anticipation of his death (John 12:3-7). Perhaps her personal experience of Jesus radical teachings led her to this prophetic act. Next are her brother Lazarus (Jn 11:1-44) and her sister Martha. Martha s faith and love allowed her to see Jesus as the Messiah. In John s gospel she is the disciple who makes the Christological statement, Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world (John 11:27). This sculpted relief was inspired by John 20:1-18. As far as I know, it is the first depiction since the 15 th c. of Mary of Magdala proclaiming the Resurrection to be shown in public. Rita L. 3 AROUND THE PARISH & OTHER PARISH NEWS DISCIPLE OF THE WEEK Today we recognize Mary McCrea as our Disciple of the Week. Mary is a faithful greeter at the 9:00 Mass. She is a member of the AWE Team and works on the Stewardship committee. Thank you, Mary for your service to Blessed Trinity! Men s Ministry Prayer breakfast will be held on January 16th from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in Fogarty Hall. The cost for breakfast is $3 or two breakfasts for $5! Sounds like you should bring a friend!! Money counter needed. Anyone interested in being a money counter is asked to contact Fr. Doug. Money counter teams are assigned once a month. Encountering Jesus Christ workshop connues this week. Privacy laws prevent the hospital from asking you. Christmas put-away. Those who bought a memorial poinsettia are welcome to take them home this weekend after Masses. Disciples are need to put away the Nativity set, wrapping and labeling the manger scene characters and cleaning up afterwards. BOUNTIFUL BASEMENT items always needed are: tunafish, laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet paper, baby diapers, deodorant, soap bars, toothpaste, shampoo, and hotel samples.
