Finance Corner Last weekend the plate collection was $3,541 and collection for the Philippines was $1,825. Second Collection Next weekend the collection is for Immaculate Conception. Stewardship Corner The Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect. Good stewards know that they are accountable to God for all they have and are, and they strive to live in readiness for His coming. Leave a Legacy Often persons find they have a vacant lot or other piece of land that is costing upkeep and taxes while, in today's market, its value has decreased. You can give that land to your parish and take a charitable deduction for the FULL market value. Talk to your attorney or call Humboldt Area Foundation at All Souls Day The church dedicates the entire month of November to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. As Pope Benedict XVI states I wish to remind all the faithful of the importance of prayers for the dead, especially the offerings of the Mass for them. Envelopes are in both churches for those who do not receive parish envelopes e by mail. You may put them in the weekend collection with the names of the deceased for whom you wish prayers. Pancake Breakfast benefiting St. Bernard s Maintenance Fund will be held Sunday, Dec. 1st from 9:00 am until 11:30 am at St. Bernard Parish Hall. Menu is pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham or sausage, applesauce, coffee and orange. Attend the Advent Fair after breakfast!!! Parishioners are saying the rosary every Sunday before mass. We will be starting promptly at 9:00 am. Anyone wishing to participate is welcome.

4 December 1st 2013 st Sunday of Advent 1 st Heads Up from the Pastor! As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we are now in the middle of our capital campaign To Walk, To Build, To Profess, in which every parish in the Diocese of Santa Rosa will participate. A few weeks ago, a small group of parishioners and I begin to reach out to families of the parish to explain the project in more detail. I d like to thank the families who have already been contacted by me, or a member of our campaign committee, for your kindness and receptiveness. For all those who have not yet been contacted, please know that our group is working very hard, and if you haven t been contacted yet, please be patient. We re currently in the quiet phase of the campaign and building some momentum, and soon enough, the entire parish will be invited to participate. In the meantime, I ask for your prayers for a successful endeavor, and thank you again to the families who have already been so kind and generous. Now held at St. Bernard Parish Hall! Fr. Eric s Wednesday Night Study Sessions are every week except the last Wednesday of the month. They are held at St. Bernard Parish Hall, 7:30 pm. This session is on the Gospel of Mark. Call for questions. The Holy Rosary is recited every morning at 7:10 am, Monday-Friday at St. Joseph Church prior to Mass or Eucharistic Service at 7:30 am. The Messiah Choral Arts Academy performs "Voices of Christmas," on Sun., Dec. 8th at 4:00 and at 6:30 pm at the 7th Day Adventist Church in McKinleyville. All are welcome. No admission fee. Thanks to all the parishioners who helped with the Thanksgiving sing. You made the evening great! This year Catholic Detention Ministries is requesting donations (before December to avoid a busy time in the churches) of small individually wrapped candies for the inmates of the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Because of the quantity of Christmas cards received last year, cards are not needed this year. The candies provide a little something nice for these people who find little joy on Christmas. Please leave donations at the church or rectory no later than Monday December 9th for pickup. RESPECT LIFE NEWS Here is an excerpt from an article on life issues by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: LIFE MATTERS: A CATHOLIC RESPONSE TO THE DEATH PENALTY. "Even if the death penalty were always imposed without error, should we support its use? Today a growing movement in the United States, led by Catholics, opposes the use of the death penalty. As a result, more states are restricting or abolishing its use, but many other states retain this penalty. Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia, recently summed up the case against the death penalty in these words: 'As children of God, we're better than this, and we need to start acting like it. We need to end the death penalty now.' Let us then join in efforts to end the death penalty and show that we are people of life, hope and mercy. "In this year of faith, may our own faith be measured by our capacity for joy in community."
