1 State of the Parish Report July 2016 through June 2017 St. Peter Catholic Church THE JESUIT CHURCH IN CHARLOTTE S CENTER CITY Dear Friends, I am pleased to present you with our annual report on the state of our parish. As you will see, we continue to be blessed as a community of faith of over 1300 households. With God s grace, St. Peter has continued to grow as a Jesuit parish, in numbers and in depth of commitment. We are deepening our Ignatian Spirituality. We do so in prayer and discernment, in service of each other and in care for those on the margins: the homeless, the hungry, and the migrant. I am grateful for your stewardship that makes such a difference in our parish life and in the wider community. This report is a statement of accountability for our stewardship during the past fiscal year (July 2016 June 2017). May we always recognize the many blessings that we have received and, with the Lord s grace, may we always make a generous return to God. Yours in Christ, Fr. 2 Page 2 State of the Parish Report July 2016 through June 2017 Message from Immediate Past Council Chair On behalf of the Pastoral Council, I am pleased to report that St. Peter is in a position of extraordinary financial, operational, and spiritual stability. The remarkable level of energy and engagement of our parishioners over the past year was evidenced by continued strong participation in stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. Our steadfast and tireless Pastor, Fr. Jim Shea, thoughtfully and effectively guided the enhancement of our Jesuit presence throughout the region while strengthening our essential relationship with the Diocese. We were blessed this year to have Fr. Jim Bowler assigned to the parish to join Fr. Shea and Fr. John Michalowski in these efforts. The Pastoral Council fully embraced a new organization structure, which replaced separate Parish and Stewardship Councils and resulted in a greater level of collaboration and collective discernment around parish needs. As we look forward, the Pastoral Council will complete a strategic planning initiative, undertaken with the involvement of many parishioners, to determine how best to deepen our Ignatian core as a parish and work together for the greater good in our communities of engagement. Additionally, the Pastoral Council would like to recognize and thank our fabulous parish staff who so expertly and professionally provided unwavering support to the Pastoral Council, parish operations, and numerous ministry endeavors. The upcoming year will require continued discernment to determine how we can more deeply come to know, love, and serve God and one another and the Pastoral Council looks forward to working with each of you in that effort. 3 Page 3 St Peter Catholic Church Charlotte, NC Message from Pastoral Council Chair Update on Strategic Planning Process As our parish has grown, so have the programs and activities developed to meet the spiritual needs of our members and to go beyond our walls and reach the Charlotte community and beyond. More than ever, we need to carefully discern about how we continue and evaluate and choose how we use our time, talents and treasure. Through the strategic planning process, we are laying out a vision for the parish and how to achieve it. At the heart of our developing plan is the desire for all parishioners to have a greater understanding of Ignatian spirituality, which will shape our personal growth and the future of our parish. The Pastoral Council began the strategic planning process in August 2016 with a meeting of ministry leadership. Guided by process recommendations from the Jesuit Conference and the Diocese of Charlotte, the strategic planning committee has continued to discern and meet. Fr. Shea provided direction to the team, which included Pat Mumford, Anne-Marie McLeod, Michelle Maidt, Dan Roth and Bob Macpherson. At a meeting in February, the Pastoral Council shared new mission and vision statements for the parish with the Finance Council, ministry leaders and parish staff. Our Mission As a Catholic Jesuit parish in Charlotte s Center City, we are animated by the spirit of St. Ignatius and welcome all to share in the joy of the Gospel and to come to know, love and serve God and one another. Stronger Together Go Deeper Go Forth Thriving Foundation Our Vision We are a joyful, supportive, engaged and connected parish community. Parishioners have the tools to go deeper spiritually and are grounded in an Ignatian foundation and aware of a God who is trying to be known to them. United through our Ignatian spirituality, we lead and serve others in all our communities of engagement. Our parish structure is well-organized and resourced to be responsive and support our mission. The committee has completed a draft of our plan for the future what our parish would look and feel like in 2020 and beyond. In FY18, the strategic planning committee will evolve to include additional parish leadership and staff. Its work will be to finalize the actions for the plan. We will continue to share its development and progress with the parish. 4 Message from Finance Council Chairperson Page 4 I have nothing but heartfelt gratitude for your generosity over the past fiscal year. Total revenue was $1,554,161 which is a 13% increase from the prior year. Our expenses for the year were $1,290,053 which left an operating surplus of $264,108. In addition to these revenues, your generosity was also shown through increased participation in the Diocesan Support Appeal, the Priest Retirement Fund and other second collections throughout the year. Your support of St Peter through sharing of your financial gifts enables all of us at St Peter to grow in our faith and reach out beyond our doors to those in need. In addition to our outreach through the different ministries of St Peter, we were also able to provide financial support through our tithing in the amount of $139,391! The Facilities Commission, continually evaluates needed repairs, maintenance and upgrades to our church campus so in addition to operating expenses, an additional $47,705 was spent during the year on much needed capitalized projects. Your generosity has put St Peter on a strong financial footing with our day-to-day operations. Given that, at the last meeting of the fiscal year, the Finance Council voted to designate $180,000 to the Campus Restoration / Preservation Fund. This fund was started by Fr. Shea to set aside monies for forecasted plant expenses for the campus over the next several years. After designation of these funds we will still have ample reserves in our operating account. Again, I want to thank you for your generosity and would like to thank the members of the Finance Council who have worked very diligently in their ministry of serving St Peter.
