THE HYMNS Emmanuel Presbyterian Church is well-known as a singing church! We take Paul s words in Colossians 3:16 serious, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. The hymns that we sing represent some of the best music that the church has produced over the last 2,000 years. We stand in a long tradition of church music and we work very hard to choose hymns that are true, good, and beautiful. We want to sing true hymns, those that accurately reflect biblical teaching about God, this world, and our life in it. We want to sing good hymns, those that fit the place in the service where we sing them and have also stood the test of time. And, we want to sing beautiful hymns, those whose lyrics and tune unite to convey the message of the hymn in a manner that gives the congregation full voice. So, lift up your voice and join with all the angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, to praise and magnify God s glorious name! Liturgical Color: Green symbolizes our growth in Christ

The Divine Service September 30, 2018 The Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church opens wide her doors and offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come. PRELUDE We Shall Be Like Him - C. H. Gabriel We shall be like Him: O wonderful tho't! Blessed the hope the assurance hath wrought; Chang'd from the sorrow and trials of years, We shall be like Him, When Jesus appears. We shall be like Him; O how the promise cheers! We shall be like Him, When Jesus appears. Bogum Park WORDS OF PREPARATION/SILENCE Ecclesiastes 4:1-16 All scripture passages printed in back of bulletin. COLLECT OF THE DAY O God, you are the strength of all who trust in you, and without your aid we can do no good thing. Grant us the help of your grace that we may please you in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. SILENT PRAYER Following the prelude, please observe silence in final preparation for gathered worship. PASTOR S WELCOME!3

CALL TO WORSHIP The Service of Entrance HYMN OF INVOCATION!4

O taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth in him. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let us pray. PRAYER OF ADORATION world without end. Amen. CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Having confessed together our great need for God s mercy, let us now silently and humbly confess to God our personal and particular sins.!5

DECLARATION OF ABSOLUTION THE GLORIA Hear the Word of the Gospel: Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our justification. All you who repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, rejoice and be glad and give glory to the Lord who has taken away all of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. O Lord, open our lips, and our mouth will declare your praise.!6

HYMN OF GRATITUDE!7

The Service of the Word THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22 Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! THE PSALTER Psalm 124 Choir: If the LORD had not been on our side, let Israel now say; All: If the LORD had not been on our side, when enemies rose up a- gainst us; Then would they have swallowed us up alive in their fierce anger to- ward us; Then would the waters have over- whelmed us and the torrent gone over us; Then would the raging waters have gone right over us. Blessed be the LORD! he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth. We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; the snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the Name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the be- ginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. THE GOSPEL LESSON Mark 9:38-50 Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ!!8

OUR RESPONSE!9

WELCOME At this time, please pass the contact folders down the row, fill out the contact cards as necessary, and drop the card in the offering plate. INTERLUDE PRAYER OF SUPPLICATION Joel Altsman Unison: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. THE SERMON LESSON Ecclesiastes 4:1-16 Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION MORNING SERMON The Need for Community Ecclesiastes 4:1-16 Rev. Greg Ward!10

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH Unison: The Service of the Table The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you! Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Members of the congregation greet one another with a sign of friendship such as the ancient words that the church has used over the centuries, The peace of Christ be with you, and the response, And also with you.!11

TITHES AND OFFERINGS* The earth is the Lord s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. HYMN OF GRATITUDE TO GOD *Please make checks payable to Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. All gifts are tax deductible and as such are at the discretion of the Session of EPC for the ministry of the Church.!12

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendor, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. PRAYER OF DEDICATION Gracious God and Father, with grateful hearts we present to you these tithes and offerings, together with all that we are. Multiply these gifts and increase their usefulness. Set your blessing upon us all, supplying our every need according to your riches and glory in Christ Jesus, in whose mighty name we pray. Amen. Emmanuel invites all baptized Christians to come to the table of our Lord and rejoice with us in God s grace given to us in Christ. This includes all Christians, whether you are a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church or another Church. Baptized children are admitted to the Table upon an age-appropriate profession of faith in Christ. If you require a gluten free communion bread, please come forward during the passing of the peace. The center cup and inner circle contain grape juice and the outer circles contain wine. Please hold each element until all have been served so that we may partake together.!13

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The peace of the Lord be always with you! And also with you! Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to the Lord! Let us give thanks to our Lord God! It is good and right to do so! It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing:!14

The Lessons Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22 So the king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. 2 And on the second day, as they were drinking wine after the feast, the king again said to Esther, What is your wish, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled. 3 Then Queen Esther answered, If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be granted me for my wish, and my people for my request. 4 For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have been silent, for our affliction is not to be compared with the loss to the king. 5 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, Who is he, and where is he, who has dared to do this? 6 And Esther said, A foe and enemy! This wicked Haman! Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen. 9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, Moreover, the gallows that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, is standing at Haman's house, fifty cubits high. And the king said, Hang him on that. 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the wrath of the king abated. 9:20 And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Mark 9: John said to him, Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us. 39 But Jesus said, Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us.41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward. 42 Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ!

Sermon Lesson- Ecclesiastes 4:1-16 Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them. 2 And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive. 3 But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun. 4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. 5 The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh. 6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. 7 Again, I saw vanity under the sun: 8 one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure? This also is vanity and an unhappy business. 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him a threefold cord is not quickly broken. 13 Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice. 14 For he went from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor. 15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun, along with that youth who was to stand in the king's place. 16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Taking Gathered Worship Home The Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost Sunday, September 30, 2018 Taking Gathered Worship Home (TGWH) has been developed for you to use in the private worship of your home, whether you are married or single, and whether or not you have children. It is a tool to knit us together throughout the church year. While we would encourage the use of TGWH in its entirety, you are encouraged to adapt the offerings to your particular circumstances. The prayer is taken from Lutheran Worship and the psalm readings are taken from the Book of Common Prayer and the daily readings are from The Book of Common Worship.
