Knowing he was to die on the Cross and return to his Father, Jesus did not want us ever to miss him and to be alone, so He gave us His own Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist to be united with us always on earth until we are with Him forever in Heaven! What greater love is there than this? There will be a Parent/child Eucharist retreat for all Grade 2 families preparing to receive this Sacrament, on Saturday, April 1 from 10-12:30pm. At least one parent must attend! The retreat begins in the Upper Church. Please mark your calendars. We will be checking in with our students during Lent to see how their Lenten sacrifices are going. We encourage them to persevere even if they have forgotten or failed to keep their offering to Jesus. Praying daily, making sacrifices and giving to the poor through the Rice bowls is our practice of imitating Jesus. Practicing in these ways can change the way we live long after Lent is over! Happy Lent! Michelle Solomon, Director of Religious Ed THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU! Spend Wednesday evenings with the Lord this Lent, and strengthen your life-giving and life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. All are welcome to a time of Taize Musical Prayer, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and the opportunity for the 3

Please start collecting clothes, household items, toys, etc. to support this event. DIVINE MERCY IMAGE Last weekend, I was blessed to be able to do the Baptism for my cousin in Poland. It was wonderful to be able to see my family and be able to participate in the joyful celebration of this beautiful sacrament. While I was there my grandparents gave me a copy of the Divine Mercy Image. This is a painting of Jesus as he appeared to Saint Faustina at the beginning of the 20th Century. It shows Jesus walking toward the viewer with his right hand in a gesture of blessing and his left hand pointing at his merciful heart from which blue and red rays shine forth. These rays remind us of God s merciful love which pours out from his heart like the blood and water which poured out when the heart was pierced on the cross. At Jesus feet are the words Jesus, I trust in you. I love this image, it is the first view of Jesus I remember from my childhood, my parents had a small copy of it in their home. I would look at it often during thunder storms, when I was a little boy, trusting that God would keep me safe. The kind look on Jesus face still makes me feel at peace. I will be using this image as part of the Divine Mercy Holy Hour which will take place at Sacred Heart Parish on April 23 from 3 to 4pm. I hope that many of you will be able to join me in taking some time in the presence of the Lord as we ask God s mercy for the world and for ourselves. In Christ, Fr. Adrian COLLABORATIVE FISH FRY! No meat on Friday's during Lent? No problem! All are invited to our first Collaborative Fish Fry on Friday, April 7th from 6:30-8:30PM in the MacKenzie Center at Sacred Heart Church. The event will be a fundraiser for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP) chapters in the Collaborative. SVDP provides basic food, clothing, and shelter for those most in need right here in our local community. Registration Forms are at the doors of the church. Please return them to the parish offices or place the forms in the collection baskets so we know how much fish to order. We hope to see you there!

5 SACRED HEART HISTORY: Origin of the Guild of St. Francis 83 years ago! Just prior to 1934, a group of eight women decided to hold card parties for the benefit of a worthy charity within Sacred Heart Parish. Who were these card sharks that paid fifty cents to play? They were Miss Margaret V. Waters, Mrs. George Mahoney, Mrs. Frank Taft, Mrs. Mary O'Leary Finucane, Mrs. William Bradford, Mrs. Victor Alberti, Miss Teresa Breslin, and Mrs. James A. Waters. Mrs. Mary O Leary Finucane recalled that the original group first met at the home Miss Margaret Waters on the afternoon of St. Francis of Assisi s Feast Day, thus the name. Interest in this project soon grew to such an extent that the pastor, Francis Spellman, suggested that the group formally organize and include all women of the parish. The Guild of St. Francis, actually the second group of women to form a club, had many of the same members as the first group formed, The Catholic Woman s Club of Newton Centre. The purpose of the Guild of Saint Francis was to promote the interests of the Sacred Heart Parish in Newton Centre and to foster religious and social activities for its members while raising extra financial support for the parish. No one can estimate how many hours that the women of the Guild have spent cooking meals, desserts, and candies during the its 83-year history; imagine how many dishes and pots and pans they have cleaned! An untold number of events have been organized and enjoyed, and an unknown amount of money has been raised for the parish and other Christian charities. Although most of the early Guild meetings were held in the school hall, members also opened their homes for morning coffee hours, card games, and afternoon lectures or evening meetings to further their goals. The first Christmas bazaar, combined at that time with a Colonial Tea, was held at the home of Miss Margaret Waters, 84 Clinton Place. Few realized how many months of preparation were devoted to making aprons, knitted good, and dressed dolls, as well as, the hours of shopping for bargains and cooking in order to present items at this successful money raising event. Additionally, the Guild often held rummage sales at Horticultural Hall (Boston), Intercolonial Hall (Roxbury), vacant stores, and the School Hall. Card parties continued well into the 1960 s as successful fundraisers. Almost every year there was a mother-daughter supper, fashion and talent show. Dances, such as one for Mardi Gras, square dancing or more formal dinner dances, also appeared on the 5 calendar. Requiem Masses and spiritual speakers were common as well. It is apparent that the current Guild of St. Francis continues the mission of spiritual and social events for the entire parish at Sacred Heart. The Guild is always looking for active members to join our Board; for more details Kathie at longlongjj@verizon.net. We need you! Stay tuned for upcoming Guild events: Bake n Bloom on April 9, St. Francis House Spring Clothing Drive and Rummage Sale on May 13, and the annual Communion Breakfast on June 4. MAYOR SETTI WARREN TO SPEAK AT SOCIAL JUSTICE FORUM The next Robert DeSimone Social Justice Forum will be held on Sunday April 9th at 4:00PM in the Lower Church at Sacred Heart. Setti Warren, a current parishioner of Sacred Heart and Mayor of Newton, will be speaking on the topic of "Economic Growth for All." See the flyers at the doors of the church for more details. EMPTY BOWLS NIGHT On Friday, March 31, Lasell College is hosting a fund raising event for the Newton Food Pantry. Come to de Witt Hall on March 31 from 6:00 8:00pm and for a $10 donation, select a handmade pottery bowl to keep and join in a Community meal of soup and bread. The event is to raise awareness and to fight local hunger. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN There will be a Protecting God's Children training on Thursday March 30th from 7-9 pm at OLHC lower church. This is the final training that will be offered this school year. As a reminder, this is required training for all ministers in the Archdiocese. It only needs to be completed once. If you are new to liturgical ministries and have not yet gone through the training please make every effort to attend. Not attending will affect your ability to volunteer. We sincerely appreciate your commitment to volunteering and to keeping children and the vulnerable among us safe. Thank you! Please speak to one of the staff if you have questions. CLIMATE CONCERNS Father Paul Soper of the Boston Archdiocese, and Fran Ludwig to discuss how Catholic Social Teaching and Laudato Si honor the Creator. Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Middle School at 110 May Street, Needham.

6 SIGNINGS When the blind man boldly said to the cynical Pharisees that Jesus is the prophet, he was not afraid of showing how strong his faith was. Does this feel familiar to us in our secular society today? Do we really have the courage to say what we believe in? And, what are we afraid of when we speak up about our faith? Believe it or not, I have always enjoyed a good dialogue with others who obviously are curious to why I am a priest and how I can be so faithful. I always simply say that my entire life, even as a Deaf person which can be quite challenging, cannot be lived without God and His loving guidance and that life would be totally impossible without Him. Jesus obviously knew that the blind man has had faith all along; that he had been capable of living in his life no matter how challenging it can be. Indeed, St. Paul was right on target in his letter to the Romans saying that we need to try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord by taking no part in the fruitless works of darkness. It can be really easy for us to be consumed in the dark and bitter world when we could not live up to the challenges in our daily lives. The blind man even had to persevere in his life by living it faithfully! As a part of our Lenten journey, let us re-examine our challenges that might tempt us to give up, which can easily lead us into darkness and how we can look up to the blind man's faith that guided him through his life to light. Blessings on your Lenten journey! In Christ, Fr. Shawn LIEUTENANT PAUL J. SULLIVAN SCHOLARSHIP The Lieutenant Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 49th Annual Lt. Paul J.
