Two copies of the works are available for loan. Call Ed Desmond at Our Lady s Parish Office to reserve a copy. For more information about the book club contact Jim Allaire at Adult Confirmation for You or a Loved One Are you a Baptized adult Catholic who has never received the Sacrament of Confirmation? This wonderful sacrament is an opportunity to strengthen the gifts of the Holy Spirit within us and to deepen our relationship with the Lord. It is also required to serve as a sponsor or godparent and encouraged before marriage. To make this gift available, we will begin a set of classes that will answer any questions you might have about this sacrament and prepare you to receive it. The first session will be on Thursday, January 18, and meetings will run on Thursdays until Easter. If you, or anyone you know, is interested, please contact Fr. Adrian or Brian Romer Niemiec.

5 Dear Friends, Quick wit by Fr. John: At a staff gathering I said: Fr. John, give us grace, [requesting he say grace]. A staff member says: Isn t that God s role? Tongue planted firmly in cheek, and with a smile, Fr. John replied: There s a difference? Laughter by all. All kidding aside, while Fr. John is not God, HE IS A SAINT! Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative Collaborative News Pope Francis Optimism on Change: Situations can change; people can change. Be the first to seek to bring good. Do not grow accustomed to evil, but defeat it with good. The record breaking cold vs. our church heating system on maximum all day last weekend. Who won? The heating system made a big difference for the better, but you know it is a bit nippy when folks asked me to preach longer because I am full of hot air! Happily, outside of these rare record breakers, our system is up to the challenge. Frank Sinatra or Jesus? Sinatra famously sang: I did it my way. Jesus has a way already mapped out for us the most wonderful life possible. We sing: I did it Jesus way. From Fr. Dan, Administrator Grab-able Jesus. The only thing needed is to genuinely love Jesus. Love entrusts itself to the beloved, opens itself to him or her, trusts him or her. If such a genuine love of Jesus fills our hearts, then everything else will follow. Jesus is Immanuel: God with us. We don t need a telescope to scout for God. God is near; he is our traveling companion. We need only let him take us by the hand. Since God has shown himself on the earth and has pitched his tent among us, he is grab-able to all. -- Fr. Wilfrid Stinissen, S.J. Martin Luther King Day and the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity give us a chance to renew our commitment to love all men and women, no matter race, creed, gender, orientation, ethnic background, political party, etc. Jesus loves all. Jesus wills the salvation of all. Let us imitate Jesus. Sports Section: As I write this I know the Pats will face the Titans or the Bills. Glad we dodged the KC Chiefs. I feel good about beating either. I bet we won Saturday night. Both the Bruins and Celts are hot! Did the Sox sign J.D. Martinez? Was it Alabama or Georgia who won the college football championship? The Olympics are coming. Love and God bless you, Fr. Dan January 14-2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Gospel presents a best practice for us about the work of evangelization. In it, we hear that Andrew not only heard about Jesus but also stayed with him. Having been so moved by his encounter with Jesus, he went and told his brother Peter about Jesus and brought him to Jesus. We know the rest of the story of Peter s discipleship, but it is important to remember that Andrew was evangelizer to his brother. What about you? Who are you being called to bring to Jesus? Forming Disciples in Mission: Upcoming Workshops Forming Disciples in Mission is a one-day or twoevening session to provide every Catholic with a common language and tools for the work of New Evangelization. The next workshop date is January 27 at St. Malachy parish in Burlington. You can register for this or other upcoming workshops at disciplesinmission.com/formingdisciples. 5 Weekend Update Are you getting the collaborative's weekly updates every Friday morning? The Weekend Update delivers the four most important collaborative news items to your inbox, so you can stay up-to-date on all the happenings at the Sacred Heart and Our Lady's Collaborative. It's a fast and easy read, and we have gotten wonderful feedback from parishioners. Sign up by ing Brian. Food Cards Quite often we have needy persons come to the door asking for help. We generally give them a grocery store gift card. St. Vincent de Paul and others have been providing these cards, but at this time we have few left. If you would like to help, you may drop off gift cards to the parish offices during office hours. Thank you for your generosity! Worldwide Marriage Encounter "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The

6 second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." Learn how to better love your spouse by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekends are January 19-21, 2018 in South Kingstown, RI and March 9-11, 2018 in Duxbury, MA. For more information, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at or visit On Care for Creation A change in lifestyle could bring healthy pressure to bear on those who wield political, economic and social power...this shows us the great need for a sense of social responsibility on the part of consumers. Purchasing is always a moral and not simply economic act. [quoting Pope Benedict] Particular appreciation is owed to those who tirelessly seek to resolve the tragic effects of environmental degradation on the lives of the world s poorest. Young people demand change. They wonder how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis and the sufferings of the excluded. (Pope Francis, Laudato Si, 13.) Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative Collaborative News Witness to Life Rally Thursday, January 18th, 7:00pm 9:00pm at St. Stephen Parish, Framingham. All are invited to help launch the Witness to Life pilgrimage at a Rally with Bishop Mark O Connell, the Catholic band Delmore, prayer and adoration, plus two dynamic pro-life speakers: Sarah Mary Toce (Director of the New England Life and Leadership Project) and Dr. Paul Gondreau, Professor of Theology at Providence College, and father of Dominic Gondreau, the young boy with cerebral palsy who was embraced by Pope Francis on Easter Sunday For more information on this free event, contact Margaret Wakelee at mwakelee@rcab.org. Financial Peace University Financial Peace University, a Biblically-based personal finance course by Dave Ramsey, will run for nine weeks on Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00am starting January 7th. The class is in Watertown Square. There is no charge for the course, but each family unit must purchase a course materials kit, 6 which include a budgeting app. A limited number of steeply discounted kits are available to parishioners on a first-come basis. Contact the coordinator, Frank Medlar, at Volunteer Opportunities with Constellation Hospice Constellation Hospice is seeking hospice volunteers for patient visits or office work. We have opportunities in the Newton area. We offer an indepth orientation program, on-going training, and education. Volunteers will be matched in order to make the best experience for the patient the volunteer. To arrange for an interview or for more information please contact, Nathan O Bara, Volunteer Coordinator at or by nobara@constellationhs.com Thinking about Hospitality Why do you come back to Sacred Heart or Our Lady s week after week? What makes you feel at home? How do you feel welcomed (or unwelcomed) when you visit a new church for the first time? The pastoral staff and pastoral council has been thinking about these and similar questions. This conversation is rooted in our Pastoral Plan, which calls us to Share the Good News by engaging those on the margins of our community. We began by piloting a Welcome Table at Our Lady s, and offered Adult Faith Formation opportunities that were accessible and relevant to those seeking answers to foundational questions of faith. As we journey toward Lent and the Resurrection of Christ at Easter, we will be refocusing on this fundamental element of parish life. In the coming months we will be asking parishioners, ministries, and organizations in the collaborative to work with us on continuing this mission of hospitality. If you would like to be involved in these conversations, please contact Brian Romer Niemiec bniemiec@sholnewton.org). Most importantly, we ask for your prayers. Please pray that our collaborative may discern how best to welcome and include all who enter our doors. Please pray also for how you can assist in this ministry, particularly through your presence at Sunday Mass.

7 New Office Hours at Sacred Heart In an effort to better serve the Sacred Heart Community and provide more access to the resources of the office and staff, the office hours at Sacred Heart have been expanded and changed to the following schedule: Sunday through Thursday 9:30AM to 2:30PM. Friday and Saturday Closed. If you have any questions, please contact Brian Romer Niemiec Coffee Hour for Marie Buckley All parishioners are invited to the Coffee Hour after the 9:00AM Mass on Sunday, January 28 th. We will be celebrating Marie Buckley s four years of ministry in the Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative, and wishing her well as she begins a new chapter in her life. Religious Education News Religious Ed classes are on hiatus for the Christmas break and will resume on Tuesday, January 16, As childr en and adults alike yearn for the joy of Christmas morning, this desire for joy is really our search for God! God comes to us as a baby, so we are not frightened by His majesty and beauty. He wants us to be near Him so he can wipe away our every tear, forgive us our sins and fill us with His peace and joy. May the beauty and humility of the little Child Jesus make us come close to him in prayer and love in the manger of our hearts this Christmas morning! "O come let us adore Him"! Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative Sacred Heart News ~Michelle Solomon Director of RE Hospitality Committee Seeking New Volunteers As you may know, the hospitality committee helps the parish by coordinating social events related to our parish mission. Hospitality committee volunteers can participate in one or as many of the parish activities they wish and in any way they like (e.g. baking goods, helping decorate, cleaning up, etc.). If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Dr. Maura Iversen at mdiversen@verizon.net. She looks forward to working with all current & new members. Prison Visitation Opportunity One day each month, a small group of men and women from the Newton Wellesley area visits inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens. Most of those visited are far from home so receive few if any visits in the course of a year. If you might be interested in joining us, please contact Sacred Heart parishioner Jim Reilly for further information. Jim can be reached at CORI Forms All volunteer Ministers of Communion, Lectors, ushers at Sacred Heart Parish are required to submit a CORI form each year. Inclement Weather Policy for the Newton Collaborative Mass Cancellations During the week, if Newton Public Schools are closed or have a delayed opening, the weekday morning Masses at both Sacred Heart and Our Lady s will be cancelled. This is for the safety of those who attend Mass and it also allows for the clearing of the parking lot and stairways. Remember, we each have a duty to keep ourselves and our family safe. If the scheduled Mass has an announced intention, the intention will be rescheduled to the next available Mass. If unsure, please check the cancellations list on local TV and radio stations. You can also call the parish offices or check the website to see if Masses have been cancelled. Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative Our Lady s News Helping Hands Ministry The Helping Hands ministry is need of a new volunteer coordinator for this ministry. Helping Hands provides and delivers home-cooked meals to members of our parish community who are homebound and/or unable to provide meals for themselves due to physical illness or impaired mobility and who have limited access to resources from family or friends. Helping Hands can provide short-term assistance with meal preparation and delivery during times of crisis when other community resources are not readily accessible, or longer-term assistance when needs dictate. Helping Hands recognizes the importance of alleviating social isolation for our homebound recipients by providing a compassionate and friendly visit along with our food deliveries. If you can help us continue this important ministry please contact Rosemary Seibold at the Parish Office. The prior coordinator, who has move away, has conveyed that is a very minimal time commitment each month. Bristol Lodge Food Donations Thanks to the generosity of many parishioners, we are now well stocked for the next few months of service with the Confirmation Candidates, and we are not in need of any additional donations right earlier this year of Confirmation candidates preparing dinner at the soup kitchen in Waltham. A group goes once each month to make and serve dinner for around 50 people! now. Faith in action! Photos from 8
