THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER Saturday, March 31, :30 p.m.
The Vigil of Easter is the richest, most sensuous, most ancient, most complex, most soul-satisfying liturgy of the year. In the church of the first centuries, believers gathered expectantly to hear stories of God s saving acts, to sing and pray, and celebrate the great victory of light over darkness, ending their watch at dawn by celebrating the first communion of Easter. All who were to be baptized during the year were baptized on this night. Tonight we come to the waters of Easter to welcome new Christians and renew the covenant God made with us at our baptism where we are joined to the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection. Candidates for Holy Baptism Alexander Gibbons, son of Don and Hadley Gibbons Valerie Shields and Tiffany Rodriguez, sponsors Arthur Hansen, son of Katie and Jim Hansen Ryan Ferrer and Christine Liebsack, sponsors Darrell Kirk Bart Brosten, Joel and Patty Maier, Don and Sylvia Maier, sponsors Flynn Roby, son of Becky and David Roby Katie and Stefan Bennett, sponsors Candidates for Affirmation of Baptism Katie Bishop Barb Mockett, sponsor Scott Magelssen Todd Wathey, sponsor Daniel Vangen Don Boelter, sponsor Amanda Darling Shannon McCarthy, sponsor Theresa Magelssen Amy Wathey, sponsor Fred Vonderlage Rick Bonk, sponsor Renée Dudley Signe Roscoe, sponsor Riley Dudley Molly Chrisman, sponsor Jim Popp Mike Clark, sponsor Liz Schmidt Barb Mockett, sponsor Steve Schmidt Paul Mockett, sponsor 2
LIGHT A blazing fire welcomes you to this Easter Vigil. If you have brought a container for the water procession, please leave it with an usher. Take a candle and a bulletin, and enter the darkened worship space in silence. As the leaders, the families of children being baptized and their sponsors, and those affirming baptism gather in the narthex we sing, first time cantor, then all: At the sound of the bell, please stand and face the narthex. Assembly: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Sisters and brothers in Christ, on this most holy night when our Savior Jesus Christ passed from death to life, we gather with the Church throughout the world in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of Jesus Christ. Recalling Christ s death and resurrection, we share in Christ s triumph over sin and death, and with invincible hope we await Christ s arising. 3
OPENING PRAYER Let us pray. Eternal God, in Jesus Christ you have given the light of life. Inflame us with a desire to shine forth with the brightness of Christ s rising, until we feast at the banquet of eternal light; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Presider signs and blesses the Paschal Candle. It is inscribed with the year 2018 and remains lighted throughout Easter s 50 days. It is lighted again at all baptisms, baptismal festivals, and funerals as a reminder of the Paschal Mystery. Christ yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, all times and all seasons belong to God. To Jesus Christ be glory and dominion through all the ages of eternity. The Paschal Candle is lighted from a flame of the new fire. The light of Christ rises in glory, overcoming the darkness of sin and death. The Paschal Candle, like the pillar of fire leading Israel out of Egypt, leads the procession, and clouds of incense remind us of the pillar of smoke. (Incense used tonight is non-allergenic and non-choking.) Ushers will follow behind the candle to light individual candles at the end of each pew. Pass the light on to your neighbor. As the procession moves, we respond to the cantor, who intones three times: The light of Christ Thanks be to God! EASTER PROCLAMATION The cantor will begin the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet). The ancient hymn praises the light of Christ. Throughout the hymn, the Assembly repeats the cantor s refrain: This is the night! Rejoice, now, all heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God s throne! Jesus Christ is risen! Celebrate the divine mysteries with exultation; and for so great a victory, sound the trumpet of salvation. Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your king! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever. Rejoice, O holy church! Exult in glory! The risen Savior shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy, echoing the mighty song of all God s people. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 4
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that with full devotion of heart and mind and voice we should praise the invisible God, and the only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; who, by his precious blood, redeemed us from bondage to the ancient sin. For this indeed is the Paschal Feast in which the true Lamb is slain, by whose blood the doorposts of the faithful are made holy. This is the night This is the night in which, in ancient times, you delivered our forebears, the children of Israel, and led them, dry-shod, through the sea. This is the night This is the night in which the darkness of sin has been purged away by the rising brightness. This is the night This is the night in which all who believe in Christ are rescued from evil and the gloom of sin, are renewed in grace, and are restored to holiness. This is the night This is the night in which, breaking the chains of death, Christ arises from hell in triumph. O night truly blessed which alone was worthy to know the time and hour in which Christ arose again from hell! This is the night This is the night of which it is written: The night is as clear as the day, and, then shall my night be turned into day. The holiness of this night puts to flight the deeds of wickedness; washes away sin; restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to those who mourn; casts out hate; brings peace; and humbles earthly pride. Therefore, in this night of grace, receive, O God, our praise and thanksgiving for the light of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, reflected in the burning of this candle. We sing the glories of this pillar of fire, the brightness of which is not diminished even when its light is divided and borrowed. For it is fed by the melting wax which the bees, your servants, have made for the substance of this candle. This is the night This is the night in which heaven and earth are joined things human and things divine. We, therefore, pray to you, O God, that this candle, burning to the honor of your name, will continue to vanquish the darkness of night and be mingled with the lights of heaven. May Christ the Morning Star find it burning, that Morning Star who never sets, that Morning Star who, rising from the grave, faithfully sheds light on the whole human race. And we pray, O God, rule, govern, and preserve with your continual protection your whole church, giving us peace in this time of our paschal rejoicing; through the same Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 5
Following the cantor s proclamation, the children s choir continues: Children s Choirs: The paschal candle brings us light. The angels join our song tonight. All earth, all heaven praise this sight! The paschal candle brings us light. The light proclaims our Risen King. The death of death to earth he brings. Join in, lift up your voice and sing! The light proclaims our Risen King. Raise your lighted candle at the acclamation. Assembly: The light of Christ. STORY The Presider calls us to hear and remember the stories of God s salvation. Creation RESPONSE Genesis 1:1-2:4a 6
Let us pray. (Silence) Almighty and eternal God, you created all things in wonderful beauty and order. Amen. Salvation Freely Offered Isaiah 55:1-10 RESPONSE Send the Rain Let us pray. William McDowell and William McMillan (Silence) Holy God, you created all things by the power of your Word, and you renew the whole earth by your Spirit. Deliverance from the Fiery Furnace Daniel 3:1-29 RESPONSE Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego Let us pray. Bill Greer; arr. Joseph M. Martin (Silence) Eternal God, the only hope of the world, by the words of your prophets you declare to us the word of salvation. Amen. Dying with Christ in Holy Baptism Romans 6:3-11 THE HOLY GOSPEL 8
The Risen Christ John 20:1-18 As the reading is announced: Preacher: The Holy Gospel according to John. Assembly: Glory to you, O Lord. At the reading s conclusion: Preacher: Assembly: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON WATER BAPTISMAL WATER PROCESSION First, the baptismal candidates and their families and sponsors, as well as adults preparing to renew their baptismal promises, exit by the center aisle after the first verse of the hymn, led by the worship leaders. Then, members of the assembly exit by the side aisles and return with their water by the center aisle. If you have not brought a container, there are containers marked VISITORS on the tables closest to the windows in the narthex. People bring all kinds of containers to carry their water to the large font prized heirlooms or symbols of their daily work and ministry all as signs of our shared life as God s children. HYMN The Gift of Water Please join in singing as indicated below. 1) Children s Choirs: The gift of water s what we bring. It seems like such a simple thing. Yet from it comes a living spring, The gift of water s what we bring. 2) Chancel Choir: Before the world had come to be, Before there was a you, a me God s Spirit blew across the sea. Before the world had come to be. 3) All: The gift of water s what we bring. It seems like such a simple thing. Yet from it comes a living spring. The gift of water s what we bring. 4) Chancel Choir: This gift of God fills all the earth. It drowns, it heals, it gives new birth. No mind like ours can guess its worth. This gift of God fills all the earth. 5) All: The gift of water s what we bring. From this small gift new life will spring. Like streams and rivers, we will sing: The gift of water s what we bring. 6) All: Up, up with us and join the song. By Word and water all belong To God alone. Now sing along! Til earth s drowned in Baptismal song. 9
A Joyful Flourish Andre Campra, arr. John Leavitt ELW #423 Shall We Gather at the River ELW #445 Wash, O God, You Sons and Daughters PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES FOR HOLY BAPTISM Parents and sponsors present children for baptism: Sponsors: We present name/s for baptism. Darrell: called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to be baptized into Christ? Response: Response: Response: We do. Jim and Katie, Hadley and Don, Becky and David: called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your children baptized into Christ? We do. As you bring your children to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with them among God's faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your children grow in the Christian faith and life? We do. The presiding minister addresses sponsors: Sponsors, do you promise to nurture these persons in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help them live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Response: We do. The presiding minister addresses the assembly: People of God, do you promise to support name/s and pray for them in their new life in Christ? Response: We do. PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES FOR AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM Sponsors present adults who are journeying in the WAY process for the renewal of baptismal vows. Sponsors: I present (name) who desires to affirm his/her baptism. We give thanks to God for the gift of your Holy Baptism and for your unity with us in the one body of Christ. We welcome your affirmation of baptism tonight. Let us pray. (Silence) 10
Assembly: Merciful God, we thank you for these your people, whom you have made your own by water and the Spirit. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants as they affirm the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth through this holy sacrament. We ask this in the name of Christ. Amen. RENUNCIATION OF EVIL AND CONFESSION OF FAITH The three-fold nature of our faith is amplified in the liturgy by having first the families of children being baptized respond. Next the WAY candidates and their sponsors respond. Finally, the entire assembly responds. I now ask you to reject sin, profess your faith in Christ, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Baptismal candidate, parents, and sponsors of children: WAY candidates and their sponsors: Assembly responds with all: I renounce them. I renounce them. I renounce them. Do you renounce all the powers of this world that rebel against God? Baptismal candidate, parents, and sponsors of children: WAY candidates and their sponsors: Assembly responds with all: I renounce them. I renounce them. I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Baptismal candidate, parents, and sponsors of children: WAY candidates and their sponsors: Assembly responds with all: (Name), do you turn to Christ as your Lord and Savior? Response: I renounce them. I renounce them. I renounce them. In faith I turn to Christ. The three-fold renunciation of evil is precursor of the three-fold affirmation of faith made in the Apostles Creed, in which we express our trust in the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Assembly: With the whole Church in heaven and on earth, let us confess our faith. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? 11
Assembly: Assembly: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATERS The Prayer of Thanksgiving over the Waters evokes biblical stories of God s saving activity through water. The Lord be with you. Assembly: And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Assembly: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty One, you are the River of life, you are the everlasting Wellspring, you are the Fire of rebirth. Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and creeks. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around us, above us: our life is born in you. You are the fountain of resurrection. Praise to you for your saving waters: Noah and the animals survive the flood. The Israelites escape through the sea and drink from the gushing rock. Naaman washes his leprosy away, and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again. At this font, Holy God, we pray: breathe your Spirit over this water and into us gathered here this night. Illumine our days. Enliven our bones. Dry our tears. Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us. Quench all our thirsts with your eternal fountain, and bring to birth Christ s living body on earth: in the name of the Father, (+) Son and Holy Spirit. Assembly: Amen. BATH Assembly: Amen. (Name), I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 12
The assembly acclaims Alleluia after each baptism. GIVING THE BAPTISMAL CLOTHING Receive this robe, for in baptism you have been clothed in the righteousness of Christ who calls you to his great feast. LAYING ON OF HANDS Let us pray. (Silence) We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you have given us new birth, washed us from sin, and raised us to eternal life. Sustain (name) with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Assembly: Amen. SIGNING WITH THE CROSS AND ANOINTING WITH THE OIL OF CHRISM (Name), child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. GIVING OF THE LIGHT A candle is given to each of the newly baptized. Assisting Minister: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and give glory to God. I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus. In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share. Join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. 13
AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM (Names), tonight along with us you have made public profession of your faith. Now I ask you, do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear God s Word and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Candidates: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. Assembly: People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. PRAYER OF BLESSING Assembly: Let us pray. (Silence) We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Spirit you give us new birth, wash us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. Stir up in (names) the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST MEAL THE GREAT THANKSGIVING 14
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin; who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, living, and loving God, we praise you for creating the heavens and the earth. We bless you for bringing Noah and his family through the waters of the flood, for freeing your people Israel from the bonds of slavery, and for sending your Son to be our Redeemer. We give you thanks for Jesus, who, living among us, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and with a love stronger than death, gave his life for others. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering, therefore, his life-giving death and glorious resurrection, we await your promised life for all this dying world. Breathe your Spirit on us and on this bread and cup: carry us in your arms from death to life, that we may live as your chosen ones, clothed in the righteousness of Christ. 15
Through him all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE TABLE Presider breaks the bread in silence. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the bread. As you once revealed yourself to the Apostles. SHARING BREAD AND CUP AND ANOINTING Communion will be shared at the front of the nave. Receive the gift of Christ s risen body in the bread, and then feast on the cup of blessing by choosing either red wine or white grape juice. You may drink from the cup or dip the bread into the cup. This is the table of the Lord. All are welcome to come at Christ s invitation and may choose to receive either the communion meal that is offered for all the baptized by approaching with open hands, or for a blessing by coming forward with hands folded. Ask the server for gluten-free bread. All who desire to do so are welcome to be anointed in memory of their baptism and in affirmation of this covenant with God. Music During the Distribution and Anointing Song of Joy O Filii et Filiae ELW #470 Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether ELW #449 We Know That Christ Is Raised Arnold Sherman Ivo Antognini Alleluia, Sing to Jesus Alleluia! Born of Mary, earth your footstool, heav n your throne. As within the veil you entered, robed in flesh, our great High Priest. Here on earth both priest and victim, at the Eucharistic feast. 16
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of heaven to nourish your people. Send us forth as witnesses to Jesus resurrection that we may show your glory to all the world; through the same Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN WITH THE ASPERGES Feel free to extend your arms and receive the water sprinkled upon the assembly in remembrance of your baptism. Come, Almighty to deliver; let us all thy life receive Suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, Pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be. Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee. Changed from glory into glory, till in heav n we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise. BLESSING AND DISMISSAL May the victorious Christ, risen from the dead, with the Creator and the Life-giving Spirit (+) bless us now and forever. Assembly: Amen. Assisting Minister: Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God! +Please join us in the narthex for a reception to welcome those who are newly baptized and newly affirmed in the faith.+ 17
