Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. 3 February 26, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, Lent begins this Wednesday. Lent is our annual reminder and opportunity to take an honest look at ourselves, and then improve our lives through a committed focus on more prayer, sacrifice, and acts of charity. Everybody is busy, or distracted, or just not in the mood. We all have excuses. But please do not miss your chance to be honest with yourself, willing to listen to God, and ready to change. The quality of the rest of your life, here and in eternity, may depend on it. On Ash Wednesday, we have scheduled five liturgies during which you can hear the Word of God and receive the imposition of ashes on your forehead. Being signed with ashes is an expression of your sorrow for your sins, and your promise to pay attention and improve. Four of these liturgies will be the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, so you can also receive Holy Communion and be united with our Lord Jesus Christ sacramentally. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 7am, 8:30, 12 Noon, and 7:30pm. Ashes will be distributed during Mass after the homily. We will also give ashes after Mass. St. Teresa students will attend Mass at 8:30. In addition, for everyone but especially for parents and children coming from public schools, we will have a brief Liturgy of the Word Service with distribution of ashes at 3:30pm. During this season of Lent, Christians should try to work on a spirit of penance and self-discipline in our lives. Each of us should make a conscious decision to not eat as much, and/or not to eat a favorite food - as a sign of selfcontrol and of sharing with the poor. This is a traditional Lenten practice. Everybody can be proud of giving up something for Lent. Today is a day to decide: what will you do? And besides your acts of self-control and of doing good for others - e.g., donate money you would have spent - these are the rules we follow for fasting and abstaining from meat: * On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we should eat only one full meal. Two smaller meals are allowed, but there should be no eating or snacking between meals. Who is obliged to do this fast? People between 18 and 59. But everyone who can make this sacrifice is urged to do so. * On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and on all the Fridays of Lent, people 14 and older are obliged to abstain from eating meat. (There is one exception this year: Friday, March 17 for Saint Patrick's Day.) Giving up some of our pleasures is a meaningful sacrifice. But increasing our frequency and quality of praying, and of contributing to the good of others, is the best way to make a meaningful Lent. Do not miss Mass any Sunday. Join us for weekday Masses: 8:30 Monday to Saturday, 12 Noon Monday to Friday. We hear confessions every Saturday from 12 to 1. All children in grades 2 and up, in CCD and school, will have their opportunity for reconciliation. Our marathon confession day - Reconciliation Monday - will be Monday April 10th, 3 to 9pm. By attending Mass every day or very often during the six weeks of Lent, you get to open your ears and heart to the Word of God. You commune with Jesus by receiving him into your body and soul on a daily basis. Let me make a bold statement: Everybody who pays attention to God and to other people s needs during Lent will be much better off for doing so. I will tell you a story, and you can draw your own conclusions: A rich man was complaining to his psychiatrist that he felt sad and unloved despite all the things he could buy. The psychiatrist asked him to stand up and walk over to the window. "What do you see?" "I see lots of people - children, men and women." Then the psychiatrist asked him to walk over to a mirror. "What do you see? "I see myself." The psychiatrist agreed with him, and explained: "Notice that there is glass in both the window and the mirror. When you look through the window, you see others. But when you look in the mirror, you only see yourself." Then the doctor suggested a reason for the rich man's unhappiness: "Do you know what causes the difference between the glass in the window and the glass in the mirror? It could be the layer of silver that is put behind the glass in the mirror. It is possible that when silver is added to our lives, we may cease to see other people as they are. Or as they need us to be. And they may have a hard time seeing us." - 3 Msgr. William Belford

Ashes will be distributed in St. Teresa Church during and after Masses at 7am, 8:30am, 12 noon and 7:30pm. We will also have a special service for children and adults in church at 3:30pm. LENTEN EVENTS AT ST. RITA S Our parishioners are most welcome to attend any of the special Lenten lectures and performances FRIDAY NIGHTS at 7:30pm at SAINT RITA CHURCH, located near us at 281 Bradley Ave. This Friday at 7:30, Music Director Deborah Williams will answer the basic question: WHY DO WE SING AT MASS? And why do we sing what we sing? Come and hear a brief explanation with some samples and singing, of church music and the development of our liturgical traditions from early times to today. Each talk is free and open to everyone. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the church hall. Gathering and Burning To Make New Ashes Our Boy Scouts are preparing to burn last year s blessed palms for us, outdoors after the 12:30 Mass today. Following a prayer, all the burnt palms that have been brought to the vestibule of the church by then will be reduced to ashes. Those ashes will be used to make the Sign of the Cross on foreheads three days later on the first day of Lent, as our personal sign of repentance for the sins we have been committing, and our pledge to improve during Lent. PRO-LIFE ESSAY CONTEST The Staten Island Right to Life League (Box 60520, SI 10306) invites young people to write and submit an original essay before April 1 on abortion, euthanasia, infanticide, or stem cell research. Cash prizes will be given to the first place winners in three categories: 7th and 8th grades; HS 9 and 10; HS 11 and 12. Call A PETITION FOR THIS LENT That through our conscious decision to give up some things for Lent, and perform some special acts of charity for the benefit of others, we will please our God and prove to ourselves that we can give up without losing out, let us pray to the Lord... REQUESTING YOUR HELP FOR OTHERS NEEDS We have received mail from Cardinal Dolan with materials that explain how the ANNUAL CARDINAL S STEWARDSHIP APPEAL helps very many people in need. Your gift sustains important works of the Church that benefit our parish too. This is called a stewardship appeal. Being a steward of God s gifts means that we gratefully receive our material blessings, and trustingly share some of them with others. What is the money gathered in The Cardinal s Appeal used for? Our contributions help to make good things happen: * We help to fund Catholic Charities, a practical network which provides through its agencies loving care to many thousands of people who are hungry, homeless, ill, lonely, confused, addicted, or at risk of believing that for them there is no God and no love; * We help to educate priests and deacons to be good shepherds in the model of Jesus Christ, and do the essential work of leading worship, teaching faith, caring for souls and bodies, sustaining the heartbeat of our parish lives; * We contribute to the gift of religious knowledge for all parish children, through the religious education programs and Catholic schools that try to bring Jesus to young minds and hearts to inspire and enlighten their future; * We provide retirement care and support for the religious sisters and diocesan priests who worked in schools and parishes for years for practically nothing, and now need our contributions to live their final years with dignity. Next Sunday is the first Sunday of the month and so Sister Margaret Mary s Food Pantry will be accepting donations of food or money at all of the Masses. During this season of giving please continue as you do so well to remember the hungry and less fortunate. The winner of our January 50/50 Drawing was Mr. William Kenworthy. The prize was $502. If you would like to participate in this monthly activity that benefits our parish and makes people happy, look for the 50/50 envelopes in the vestibule. Next drawing is this week, on February

If you are so fortunate, register soon. After 50 years, you deserve all the applause you can get: at your family's celebration, and with Cardinal Dolan in St. Patrick's Cathedral. But we hope you will also celebrate right here with us at St. Teresa's Parish. We will honor all GOLDEN AND SILVER WEDDING JUBILARI- ANS at a 10am Mass and Breakfast on Sunday May 21. Our Holy Name men will be the hosts for a wonderful breakfast for you and your close family. So if you got married on any day in either 1967 or 1992, notify us at the rectory and let us pray with you and celebrate your milestone. AND DON T STOP AT FIFTY! At St. Nicholas Chapel last Sunday, Msgr. Belford presented a special certificate from Cardinal Dolan to the 11th longest-married couple who notified the Archdiocese of their longevity. Their names were in CATHOLIC NEW YORK, and Cardinal Dolan sent his blessings to MAE AND CHARLES FESTA. They have been married for 67 years. Alleluia! PARISHIONERS ARE INVITED TO SERVE ON OUR PARISH COUNCIL At the 10am Mass next Sunday, March 5, we will be choosing the names of five new Parish Council members. Parishioners who want to serve our parish are invited to give their names to Msgr. Belford by this Friday. You can read more about this in last week s bulletin on our parish website: St. Teresa Boy Scout Troop 37 is proud to congratulate three of our members - Joseph Vincent Esposito, Steven Joseph Kaht and Peter Wen- Yuan Liu for achieving the rank of EAGLE SCOUT. Troop 37 will host an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday March 11 at 7:30pm in Conran Hall. Our Parish is proud of these young men and very grateful to all our Scout Leaders.
