3 January 14, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, Friday was the day of the inspiring annual March for Life in our nation's capital. Throughout this weekend, let us continue to pray for a change of heart in our society and world, so that all girls and boys in the wombs of their mothers will again have legal protection to emerge from the womb when ready and to continue their lives on earth. We are not alone in this desire and prayer. Most of us never see any article that informs us that being against unrestricted abortion is the choice of the large majority of American people. The January 2018 issue of COLUMBIA, magazine of the Knights of Columbus, reported the newest and annually-consistent Marist Institute polling results: * 76% of American people would limit abortion to - at most - the first three months of pregnancy, which is far more restrictive than the standard that currently exists in our country. * Half would limit abortion to - at most - cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. * 63% of Americans support a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. * 60% of Americans oppose using tax dollars to pay for abortions. Jeanne Mancini is the president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund. Last year she said this: "People keep asking me - journalists keep asking me - what are our numbers for the March for Life? Well, it is hard to add up so many numbers after 44 years, because there have been a lot of us. But that isn't really the point. The only number I care about - the only number all of us here care about - is 58 million. Since 1973, 58 million Americans have been lost to abortion. We stand here today for them." Recognizing the rights of every other person, born and unborn, is an important part of listening to Jesus Christ and imitating His love. He sacrificed His own life for the salvation of everyone - rich or poor, grateful or ignorant, healthy or sick. He taught us to do to others what we would have them do to us. When we violate that golden rule by acts of violence against the innocent and defenseless, they suffer, and we suffer too, as individuals and as a society. But when we stand up for what is good and just and beautiful, remaining strong in moral virtues and practical acts of kindness, we do God s work and keep alive the flame of hope for our community. Since God gives us many chances to realize our own mistakes and repent of our sins, we have to be patient with one another and demonstrate the good deeds that we do in God s name. So let me give you just three examples of the many people in our parish who have been doing very good things for others: * The many coaches and volunteers of our YAA - the Youth Athletic Association of our parish. I am most grateful to John Tuohy, who is the chief scheduler, complaint-taker, and diplomat. Our gym is in service every day during and after school hours, and is very well maintained with the help of our custodians Max Chuba and Juan Gonzalez. Visitors tell us they are impressed by the size of our gym and the great condition of our floor and facilities. This week the YAA engaged some excellent painters to come in and give the whole gym a fresh coat of paint. Many thanks to our YAA leaders for working with Mrs. Simione and myself for the benefit of our youth and of everyone who wants time in our gym - from Golden Agers on Mondays, to adults who play in the evening, to older kids who coach younger ones, to people who come for meetings, to students and players in all the grades, from the youngest to the top. * Ramesh Ebert, his wife Carmen and their son Bimalsha. They moved here from Sri Lanka several years ago and are members of our church. Ramesh volunteered to create and install professional new signage for the display case in front of our church. They worked outdoors on two freezing, windy days to clean and repair the case and make sure that the sign fit perfectly. Our schedule of Masses is now clearer and brighter than what we had before. * The donors to our on-going RENEW+REBUILD Capital Campaign. Many people gave generous donations at once when we started in Many others made pledges, and they are keeping their promises to send regular contributions to help us fulfill our campaign goals. Occasionally, newcomers to the parish realize that they can help too. Thank you to all of you! We have been in a lengthy planning and collecting period, but the coming months will see beneficial results: air-conditioning for our gym, named Conran Hall after Saint Teresa's founding pastor, and airconditioning for school classrooms, to help the health and concentration of students and teachers when the days become hot. And before Easter, we will complete the installation and unveiling of a permanent handsome memorial recognition plaque in the vestibule of our church, allowing us to honor and commemorate our parishioners' goodness, loyalty and generosity. Again, thank you very much! - 3 Gratefully yours in Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Msgr. William Belford
4 Church of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus and St. Nicholas Chapel Staten Island, NY CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS FOR 2017 We are very grateful to everyone who contributes to the support of our parish, and we will be glad to provide a statement of your donations to St. Teresa Church for your tax purposes. In the next ten days, we will mail a contribution statement to everyone who asked for a statement last year. Other people who want one can simply write to us, to rectory@saintteresasi.org, or call during the week. Our Parish Manager Lisa Naughton will be happy to assist you. WILL SEMINAR TODAY JANUARY 21 11AM This Sunday, January 21, in our lower church hall after the 10am Mass, you are invited to join us to hear an experienced lawyer speak about estate planning, the importance of having a will, health care proxies, and related subjects that affect our families and their future. Ms. Joanne Seminara, Esq., a volunteer with our Archdiocesan Office of Planned Giving, will explain about health care proxies, executors, power of attorney, tax issues, probate, how often a will should be updated, etc. PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK For greater respect for the wisdom of our elders, especially grandparents, and for all mothers and fathers to be inspired by God to know how to take care of their children, let us pray to the Lord... COMING MEETINGS Interested families with autistic young adults are invited to a meeting this Saturday January 27 in our lower church hall from 10 to 11:15 for a discussion and sharing about our wonderful convent project. We will follow that with a meeting for parishioners and neighbors on Saturday February 24, also in the lower church hall, from 10am to 11:15. Everyone is invited. HAVING SOMEONE WHO CAN LISTEN TO YOU Everyone goes through crises. When that happens, we can benefit from a conversation with a professional counselor who shares our Catholic perspective. Our priests can make a connection for you through the Archdiocese's PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor on Staten Island, for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay per session. This can be arranged easily. Tell Monsignor Belford, Father Jean-Marie Uzabakiriho or Father John Kallattil that you want to talk with a counselor. We will contact the PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK on your behalf, and then you can call and arrange your first visit. OPEN HOUSE AT SAINT TERESA SCHOOL Visitors and interested families are welcome to come in for a tour of our school and meet our Principal Mrs. Anna Simione on any day. But there will be a special opportunity to also meet parents and students during the next TOURING TUESDAY which will be held on Tuesday January 30 from 9am to 11am. Call the school so we can prepare for you ( ) or just come and see us. We also have an OPEN HOUSE for prospective families on SATURDAY FEBRUARY 3 from 9 to 11am. Today is Baby Bin Sunday! Baby items will be collected after all of the Masses. - 4 The winner of our December 50/50 Drawing was: Joseph Vendittelli. The prize was $363. If you would like to participate in this monthly activity that benefits our parish and makes people happy, look for the 50/50 envelopes in the vestibule. The next drawing will be at the end of January.
5 BIBLE STUDY FOR YOUNG ADULTS This Epiphany, Pope Francis tweeted: Like the Magi, believers are led by faith to seek God in the most hidden places, knowing that the Lord waits for them there. Our parish has an opportunity for young adults to grow in faith together. We have resources like the Young Adult Ministry of the Archdiocese, and the FOCUS ministry that promotes relationships and growth in spiritual life through Bible studies and faith building activities with new friends. Death and loss leaves scars. Our very consoling Parish Bereavement Group will meet on Saturdays January 27 and February 10 at 10:30 AM and 11:45 am in our Parish House on Slosson and Windsor. Contact Deacon Novella Lawrence at for encouragement to come and/or details. If you are a young adult looking to find like-minded young adults looking to grow your faith and friendships, Justin justinmmreyes@gmail.com so that we can come together and learn how we can create this new ministry in HAVE YOU TRIED FQ8VRF? - 5 EARLY NOTICE FOR BURNING OF PALMS Each year our Boy Scouts have a meaningful moment after the 12:30 Mass on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. If you have palm branches from last year or previous years and would like to return them to us and have them be burned into ashes that will be used on Ash Wednesday, bring them in the next weeks to the vestibule of church. Ash Wednesday will be on February 14. APPOINTMENT TO ANNAPOLIS Our parishioners are rightly proud of the accomplishments of our young people, and so we can rejoice in a new honor that has been given to our Sunday Sacristan, Steven Jerome. Steven, a graduate of St. Teresa School, a senior at Msgr. Farrell High School, member of Troop 37 and Eagle Scout, has received an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis from Congressman Dan Donovan. Please remember to pray for all our young people to have admirable and productive lives. The St. Teresa Prayer Shawl Ministry is a great group of loving ladies whose hands create warmth and comfort for those going through difficult times. Come join us as we knit, crochet and pray, twice a month in the Parish House at 115 Windsor Road, by the school parking lot. Shawls are blessed and freely given away after the 10 a.m. Mass on the last Sunday of each month. For more information call Lucile at or Mary Anne at You will be welcome and happy to be with us. FORMED.ORG is the name of a wonderful way for parishioners of Saint Teresa Church to access a large number of interesting resources to help us continue with our faith formation. You can access these materials whenever you want to, and they do not cost you anything. Try this soon. Type in FORMED.ORG, and then use the password that you see in the headline above. Write it down, keep it in a safe place, use it often. Our Saint Teresa Parish password for FORMED.ORG is... FQ8VRF. FORMED.ORG offers tremendous content: video programs, movies, audio talks, electronic books, and downloadable materials.
