Eucharistic Adoration: Eucharistic Adoration on the First Friday of the month, beginning with the 8:30 am Mass and concluding with a Divine Mercy Holy Hour and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3:00 pm. Novena Services: Miraculous Medal Novena and the Saint Teresa Novena, with veneration of the relic of Saint Teresa, every Monday following the 8:30 am Mass. Novena service every Monday evening at 7:30 pm with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Baptisms: Every Sunday of the month 1:30 pm following the 12:30 pm Mass. Parents are asked to contact the rectory and schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests to make arrangements for the celebration of the Sacrament and to register for the Baptism preparation class. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least one year in advance of the wedding to schedule an appointment with one of the parish priests. Participation in the Marriage Preparation Program offered by the Archdiocese of New York, along with Natural Family Planning classes, is required. To register for Marriage Preparation sessions, contact the Family Life / Respect Life website at Parish Membership: New parishioners are warmly welcomed. Those already enrolled in the school, CCD Program, sports or other parish activities are not automatically registered in our parish. Please stop by the parish office or call for a membership form. It is important that all parishioners are registered. 3 Easter Sunday, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, - 3 JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN! JESUS CHRIST IS TRULY RISEN! Let these words be in your heart and on your lips today as we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior, and as we think about the awesome, history-changing results of Jesus' sacrifice for us. And do not let your feelings of relief and joy be just for one day. We should now begin a sustained period of extra happiness and grateful prayer. If you have tried to make a good Lent, giving up and giving away for the six weeks of Lent, you should claim the seven weeks of the Easter season to really celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and His victory over our sin and death. One year during Holy Week, I asked some children at a Mass why they had off on Good Friday. Several gave the right answer: so that they could pray. And then I asked them why they had off on the week after Easter? They all knew the answer to that one: so that they could play! From the answers of children come insights for adults! This Easter week, continue to spend time in prayer, but give yourself more time to play. Be as generous with your pleasures as you were with your penances. After the forty days of Lent came the Easter Triduum, and now we have the fifty days of Easter. Thanks to Jesus' giving of the Eucharist to us at the Last Supper, thanks to his suffering and death for us on the cross, and thanks to his three days in the tomb, andthen his glorious resurrection we have a Church to belong to, sacraments to receive, and a clear path to heaven. Providentially, right after the Octave (eight days) of Easter is over, we have another spiritual experience opening up for us here at our church. I urge you to come and be REVIVED during a three day Mission from 6 to 7pm in our church on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday April See inside for the invitation and details about this great opportunity to have a fresh encounter with our Risen Lord Jesus Christ. We can all get a little tired in our old routines, but this Parish Mission led by a wonderful Passionist priest, Fr. Victor Hoagland, will help to energize and revive us all. Congratulations to our parishioner Mrs. Mona Zaloom, who is being honored this Thursday as a Staten Island Advance 2017 WOMAN OF ACHIEVEMENT. Mona has been a dynamo of activity in our parish, school, and community since she and husband of 57 years, Vincent Zaloom, moved to Potter Avenue from Brooklyn in Parents of five and grandparents of 13, Mona and Vincent are each American-born children of Syrian immigrants. They met at a church-sponsored boat ride in (My great uncle, Msgr. Paul Sanky, was pastor from 1910 to 1938 of the Melkite Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary in Brooklyn where they got married.) Most recently, Mona has been the inspiration and guiding light for the Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island, which began after 9/11, and which sponsors educational talks, community events and Seder meals to bring people of different backgrounds together. I am very pleased that Mona is being honored - uncomfortable though she is at being singled out - because she is a great example for our Staten Island community of a strong, peace-promoting, devout Catholic woman who loves Jesus and therefore gives constantly to others, as a wife, mother, grandmother, daily Mass-goer, nurse, neighbor, interfaith leader, etc., etc. Birthday greetings and prayers are well-deserved on Easter Sunday, April 16, for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who observes on this date his 90th birthday! More than we understand, Joseph Ratzinger - Pope Benedict - has been a tremendously consequential figure in the life of the Church for six decades as a teacher and bishop. He is the author of 68 books, and thousands of articles and homilies. And trusting in the Holy Spirit s guidance, he made the astounding decision that he could and should step aside and let another man of greater stamina and strength take on the duties of Successor of Saint Peter, Bishop of Rome, leader of the Catholic Church, and Servant of the Servants of God. Now in retirement, Pope Benedict lives on the grounds of the Vatican, in a secluded area near Saint Peter's Basilica. He has a close and cordial relationship with Pope Francis, who appreciates his advice and says that their relationship is like having a grandfather in the house. Like many people his age, he is not physically strong. He spends his days writing and praying, without regrets and glad to not have the crushing burdens of daily crises and endless obligations as the human head of the church. But we always remember that every Pope is the only the Vicar of Christ. Jesus Christ, the risen Lord we celebrate today, is Himself the head of the Church. All of us, including the Successor of Saint Peter, are only the members of Jesus Church. Even when we members are weak and sinful, and make lots of mistakes or fail to be holy or loving, the work of the Church for the salvation of souls goes on - because Jesus Christ has died once for all time and all people. Jesus, Savior of all people, bring your consolation and peace to the many people suffering today from illnesses, poverty, wars, famines, and religious persecutions, we pray to the Lord.
