3 December 17, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, Welcome to the Third Sunday of Advent. This year we are in the shortest Advent we can have: four Sundays but only three weeks! Today s focus is on Saint John the Baptist. So it is fitting that tomorrow, Monday the 18th, will be a special opportunity for the forgiveness of our sins. Folks like us are never perfect but always forgivable. Therefore we should take advantage of RECONCILIATON MONDAY - the annual Advent day just before Christmas when priests will be in church for four straight hours - 4pm to 8pm - so that you get quick service when you come to confess your sins and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We hope for a lot of traffic in church, with many people leaving confession feeling relieved and peaceful and more ready to truly celebrate the Birth of our Lord. As Catholics, we have a duty to worship God every Sunday. And of course every baptized person should come to celebrate Mass on Christmas with his/her family and community. So next weekend we may see one another once for Sunday and once for Christmas. You can find a complete schedule of Masses inside this bulletin. These pre-christmas days can be delightful and/or stressful. Please be sure to say your prayers, read the Bible, and don't burn out before or after Christmas Day. Don't let trivial troubles or imperfect people deter you from celebrating the awesome fact that the Son of God became a human being for our sake. He gave us a second chance at eternal happiness! And to help us focus on what is important, today we have a Christmas present for you: a good book by a very good writer. Please take one for your family if someone will read it. Scott Hahn is the author, and the book is called JOY TO THE WORLD: How Christ's Coming Changes Everything (And Still Does). It is extraordinary that four Archbishops gave this book their endorsement. The best is by our own Cardinal Timothy Dolan: "(Christmas) is a time for joy and a time for family. We rejoice in the birth of Jesus Christ and the salvation He came to bring us, and we take time to be with our families during this special season. In this wonderful book, Scott Hahn beautifully explains that the Christmas story is foremost a family story. You will learn about the deep Scriptural meaning of the Nativity of Jesus Christ From Mary and Joseph to the Magi and shepherds, this book will help you discover anew the joy of Christmas!" The wintry weather last Saturday evening provided us with a special memory as many people came to Mass and stayed to see the lighting of our fourth annual display of illuminated Christmas trees under a blanket of snow. Many thanks to all the donors who support this beautiful statement of our faith, and to the dedicated men of our Holy Name Society. They spend three Saturdays in a row preparing for this celebration after the 4pm Mass. In days to come, I invite everyone to take the time to walk in our little forest and see names and decorations and the touching messages on the identifying plaques. I really think that this display of Christ-inspired light conquering darkness is a symbol of hope and a spiritual reminder for many people who pass our church. Last Saturday was also the unveiling - with much approval and admiration - of our handsome new Nativity scene, set near the walkway in front of our church. The image of the baby Jesus is not there yet; it will be placed in the manger on Christmas Eve. The stage for Him has been set with large, lifelike statues of Mary and Joseph, a shepherd, the three Magi, and animals. Hoping that you will prepare your soul for joy and your heart for a deep encounter with divine mercy and supernatural love, made visible in the person of the baby named Jesus, I am yours in Christ, Msgr. William Belford PS Don t forget to take your handsome and useful Catholic Calendar for 2018, with beautiful photos and helpful information about saints days and liturgical feasts. - 3
4 Church of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus and St. Nicholas Chapel Staten Island, NY We have a nice tradition of people helping to pay for the Christmas Flowers that will decorate our church and chapel. Christmas Flower Memorial Envelopes are still available The suggested flower offering is $20, and donors names will be displayed by Christmas on a poster at the entrances in both church and chapel. To have the list made on time, we need to receive your name and offering by tomorrow morning, December 18. THIS WEEK S NATIVITY PAGEANTS Few things can teach us more about the real meaning of Christmas than sharing in a Nativity pageant. If you were ever a Mary or a Joseph, or an angel or a wise man, or a shepherd or an innkeeper, or even a sheep or a lamb, you know what a special feeling you had from helping to tell about the Birth of the Baby Jesus. Therefore we are very grateful to Mrs. Lisa Rametta, Mrs. Anna Simione, Mrs. Karin Conry and all the young actors who are preparing these religious productions. Our Religious Education students will present their performance in church on Tuesday at 4:15 and 7:00pm. The St. Teresa School pageant will be presented on Thursday at 1:15 and 7:00pm. Everyone is invited. PLEASE RESPECT OUR NEIGHBORS Please remember that our kind neighbors at Castleton Hill Moravian Church need their parking lot on Sundays and during the week for their own churchgoers and preschool parents. Even if the lot looks empty when you arrive, their people may be coming soon. So please remember to come early for Mass and not park there. COME FOR CONFESSION THIS MONDAY BETWEEN 4PM AND 8PM Catholics have an excellent custom of getting spiritually and emotionally ready for Christmas Mass and Holy Communion by first coming to confession. Two priests will be waiting for you in church THIS MONDAY between 4pm and 8pm. Turn this Advent of hope into a Christmas of peace and joy by seeking forgiveness from God for your sins, and planning with God s grace for a better, brighter future. ADVENT PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK That the bold words and sacrificial life of John the Baptist will reach our minds and penetrate our hearts, so that we will repent of sins and build good lives on the foundation of our baptism, let us pray to the Lord... HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY S FUTURE On Sunday, January 21, in our lower church hall after the 10am Mass, you are invited to join us and hear an experienced lawyer speak about estate planning, the importance of having a will, health care proxies, and related subjects that affect our families and their future. Ms. Joanne Seminara, Esq., a volunteer with our Archdiocesan Office of Planned Giving, will explain about health care proxies, executors, power of attorney, tax issues, probate, how often a will should be updated, etc. BABY BIN GIFTS NEEDED Donations of baby items or money for babies and their mothers will be accepted today after all of the Masses. Thank you for helping families in their time of need. - 4 The Children s Liturgy at 10am Mass that is so good for ages 4 to 8 will take a short break for December 24 and December 31, and will resume on January 7. Bring your children to enjoy!
