3 Hello, Fourth Sunday of Lent March 6, 2016 The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is going to be available for all of those in need next weekend at all of the Masses. So who should be anointed? Some of us might remember when the sacrament was referred to as Extreme Unction (final anointing) and also have the understanding that it was only to be received when one was about to die. That is a proper time for it, when it might be a part of what is referred to as Last Rites when one s death is imminent and they receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and the Eucharist in preparation for this death, but it is also appropriate other times. The Rite for Anointing of the Sick states: Those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age receive this sacrament. It also states: The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or during the same illness the person s condition becomes more serious. If we limit the sacrament to only before an imminent death, then we are only looking at the spiritual benefits that Christ offers in the sacrament and denying the physical healing that may accompany it. The Rite of Anointing takes place during Mass after the Gospel. This should be expected as that is when we are used to celebrating other sacraments when they are also a part of Mass. Most of us recognize that the exchange of vows and rings at a wedding comes after the Liturgy of the Word. If you have been to a Confirmation lately or a Baptism within Mass we recognize that this is also the time when those sacraments are celebrated, and similarly for the anointing of the sick. In addition to particular prayers and petitions that are used for this sacrament, the two actions that are involved are the laying on of hands and the anointing itself. When there are only a few people the laying on of hands is done individually to each person, the priest laying his hands over them and silently praying for them. When we have many people, like our Sunday Masses, the priest will hold out his hands over the congregation and silently pray for them. After this those receiving the sacrament will either come forward as we do to receive the Eucharist, or if they cannot, stay at the end of their pew and the priest will come to them. They are anointed on the head and the palms of their hands with the oil that Archbishop Carlson blessed for this purpose last year on Holy Thursday at the Chrism Mass. This sacrament is a great gift that God gives us. A means by which the Holy Spirit comforts and aids us when we are in special need. A means God gives us to be open to and better live out His will throughout our lives. Peace, Fr. Nick Notes From The Pastor's Pen Mass Intentions Monday, March 7 6:30 am John N. First Night: Made to Become God's Children Second Night: Becoming Another Christ Third Night: Becoming a Temple of the Holy Spirit This year's parish mission will center around our call as baptized Christians not only to know and love Jesus but actually to become his actual presence for our world. Saint Joseph's Catholic Church has invited Fr. David Meconi, SJ from his teaching early Church History at Saint Louis University to lead us in three nights of prayer and reflection. For three nights in a row at 7 p.m., we will expose the Blessed Sacrament for a few minutes of silent adoration. Around 7:10 each evening Fr. Meconi will speak until 8, and we shall then conclude with Benediction. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available each night at 6 p.m. as well. A parish mission is a unique time for us to grow as a family in Christ and an opportunity for each of us to have a bit of needed silence and prayer. Please come to all or any of the nights you can. ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS Good Friday (March 25, 2016) is a day of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. Fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply. We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and penance. Rest In Peace Let us pray for all of our deceased parishioners, relatives, benefactors and friends. We remember all of our loved ones who have gone before us and pray that they are celebrating with our Lord in heaven. The food pantry is getting a little sparse on toiletries such as tooth paste, laundry detergent, dish and hand soap, paper products. We could also use some coffee, tea and cereal for our families. Thank you as always, St. Vincent de Paul Society

We can identify with all the major figures and their crisscross of emotions. The father s initial grief over his young son s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son s grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends is turned to delirious joy at the sight of his father. We understand the eldest son s bewilderment over his father s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For all his honorable toil and loyalty, there seems to be no celebration. The father, however, is prodigal in his forgiveness and mercy. He expects the same generosity from his older son. He wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found. This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It s time to pause, consider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal children heading home. We are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In his death and resurrection we have passed over. We are a new creation. In this we rejoice. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The Dynamic Catholic at St. Joseph On the Journey During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are not only called to reflect on God s mercy in our lives, but also on how we are the mercy of God to others. Through the Corporal Works of Mercy, we are given specific ways to be God s mercy in the world. We are directed to place ourselves physically into situations in order to bring mercy to others. While many of the people who practice these works are recognized as holy and faith-filled people, many others face suspicion and distrust. And some, quietly and humbly, strive to be Christ to others. Let s take the opportunity to witness mercy in action. Burying the Dead On a recent NPR broadcast, there was a story about an all boys school outside of Boston. At Roxbury Latin, a program has been started that brings volunteers from the school to serve at the burial of those who have died and have had no family step forward to claim them. Working with a funeral home that helps with this kind of burial, the boys are pallbearers and mourners at the graveside of a person that they have never met in life. The experience gives the boys the opportunity to reflect on the more tragic aspects of life. The lives of neglected and marginalized people that die alone and unwanted exist in stark contrast to those of the students. As the young men stand around the gravesite, they take part in a short memorial where they read a brief prayer together and then take turns reading a poem, scripture or a reflection on death. This is a transformative moment. By living this corporal work of mercy, the young men offer the dead honor and recognition of their dignity as a person created and loved by God. At the same time, the young men experience a new and powerful sense of self. They recognize that they will turn from the gravesite to return to their normal life of schoolwork, family, friends and social activities. But one young man observed that those are things in which you can get caught up in When you kind of get out of that bubble that you are kind of stuck in, you get perspective on what s really important in life. The boys leave the gravesite after lying flowers on the unmarked grave. Through the works of mercy many are served; those who receive the mercy, but also those who give it. March 17 Fr.
