3 Hello, First Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017 Notes From The Pastor's Pen Mass Intentions Monday, Dec. 4 6:30 am Francis Flynn & Fam Elizabeth Mullins This Tuesday we celebrate the Frist Reconciliation for the second Grade class of our PSR program. While we normally pay a little more attention and recognize when they are celebrating their First Communion we can also support them and be inspired by them for their First Reconciliation also. In second grade they usually are around 7 years old, what we consider the age of reason. That is why they will celebrate their First Communion this year, they can understand and distinguish to some degree the difference between ordinary bread and the Eucharist, but also they can understand right from wrong at a level that they couldn t before. This not only means that they now can knowingly and intentionally sin, but also that they can similarly ask for forgiveness. Actually one of the things you have to teach them at that age is that if something is an accident it isn t a sin. While the fact that you weren t paying attention or doing as you were supposed to and this caused the accident might be the sin, but the actual accident itself wasn t. I think looking at how they recognize sin, and how we have to teach them the difference of what they are not responsible for, but also what they are, is probably a good example for the rest of us also. We can get upset with ourselves or feel guilty for something that happened that might have just been an accident and itself wasn t really our fault when we should be upset with ourselves and feeling guilty for the position we put ourselves into that led to the accident. We had control of that and even if we might have gotten lucky and the accident didn t happen, we still wouldn t be innocent. I know I ve heard a few times when a child was confessing that they failed a test and I told them that failing a test wasn t a sin, but if we weren t respecting our parents or teachers and listening in class, doing our homework, and studying for the test, using the gifts God gave us as He desired instead of just how we wanted, that might be where we sinned. If we did all of that and still failed the test then the test is doing what it is supposed to and showing that we need a little more help with this topic. I think we can find similar things for us adults to consider too. This is also the First week of Advent. It is going to be a short one this year, only three weeks and one day. Maybe we can use the example and encouragement of the children receiving their First Reconciliation to encourage us to also celebrate the sacrament. Advent isn t necessarily a penitential time like Lent, but it is a time of preparation. What better way to prepare to receive Christ, like the second graders are, then to recognize and ask for the forgiveness of our sins. Peace, Fr. Nick Tuesday, Dec. 5 St VdP Benefactors Patricia Wright Wednesday, Dec. 6 6:30 am Helene Schweitzer Mary Alice Isaacson Thursday, Dec. 7 St Ambrose, Bishop & Doctor of the Church Loyola C. 5 Parish School of Religion Update We are getting out the Advent wreaths, dusting off the Christmas pageant costumes, and telling the Children all about the love God sent to the world. During advent we remember the time in the world when all were living under the yoke of Adam s sin and the glimmering hope of a savior was promised. Advent is a beautiful season to take a loving look at our lives and see how much we need Christ in our lives. This penitential season is full of anticipation and longing for the hope of the world. Many of the classes will be learning about scripture through Jessie trees. Others will learn about this liturgical season through making and praying with advent wreaths. Still other Children will be preparing through participation in the Christmas pageant. Remember to spend time away from the shopping and busyness of the world to prepare for the coming of Jesus as we are all still anticipating His final coming. Sunday Worship Dec. 9-10, :00 pm Holt Schuler & Catherine Hoff Richard Kurz Ramon Floro Liz Rainey Volunteer Have you felt a tugging on your heart? Are you looking for a way to share your love of the Catholic faith with others? Or maybe you ve thought about teaching PSR? God calls all of us to be active in our own way. St. Joseph Parish School of Religion is a great place to develop your talents. We are not necessarily looking for professional teachers to be catechists. We need people with a love of God and His Church, who are willing to devote some time to pass the faith on to the next generation. If you have ever thought about helping teach catechism classes please consider coming to the Catechist Informational Night on Monday January 8 th at from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The meeting will take place in the school for one hour. Get your questions answered, find out about Catechist formation, meet the Coordinator for Religious Education, and see if God is calling you to be a catechist at St. Joseph. 7:30 am Mark & Gigi Gaertner Frank Hackmann Greg Browne Larry Stewart Dave Gardner St. Joseph's has begun a funeral choir, the Eternal Rest Choir, to sing at funerals here at St. Joseph's. You do not have to be a member of our regular 11 am choir to be included. The level of commitment is simply the day of the funeral; one hour before to warm up, review music, and then another hour to sing the Mass. It would be a beautiful way to lend your voice as one of consolation to your brother or sister in Christ. If interested please Adam at stjmusicclayton@gmail.com to be added to the list. When a funeral is planned, an will go out and if you are able to attend, great. If you are not able to attend, that is perfectly okay as well. Please consider offering the gift of your voice. 9:00 am Zachary Jones Mary Joan Woods Terry Carmack Marcella Leonardo Deacon Del CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE SPONSORED BY ST. 7 Father Frank Bussmann, a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph and a priest of the Jefferson City Diocese, died suddenly of a massive stroke last Friday. For over 30 years Frank attended mass daily at St. Joseph, often serving the noon mass. After the end of his marriage and the raising of his four sons Frank felt a calling to the priesthood. Frank attended Immacolata Elementary School, St. Louis University High School, the University of Notre Dame and St. Louis University School of Law. Following over 30 years as an active attorney, Frank entered the seminary at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin in 2003, graduating with a Masters in Divinity in Father Frank was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on December 16, 2006, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph by His Excellency, Bishop John R. Gaydos for the Diocese of Jefferson City. He served as associate pastor at St. Peter Church, Jefferson City, pastor at Immaculate Conception Church, Montgomery City, and pastor at St. Peter Church, Fulton and St. Jude Thaddeus Church, Mokane until his death. Frank had two great passions in his life: his faith and his family. He took great satisfaction in being a pastor and working with his parishioners. With his family, he was so happy to just be Dad or Grandpa Franky. His family brought an instant smile to his face and joy to his heart.. The parish Family of St. Joseph offers its prayers for Father Frank Bussmann and the Bussmann family; as we give thanks to God for this man of faith and love. May he rest in Peace! 28th Annual National Night of Prayer for Life Uniting the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with the Feast of St. Juan Diego 9 PM Dec. 8th (Friday) to 1 AM Dec. 9th (Saturday) It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (then celebrated on December 9th) that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego. The National Night of Prayer for Life bridges these two feasts to honor Our Blessed Mother and prays through Her intercession for the establishment of a Culture of Life, protection for the Church from persecution and asks Our Lord to REVIVE OUR LAND. All are invited to participate! We ask fellow parishioners here at St. Joseph to join in praying on this holy occasion. During the HOUR OF UNITY, 12 Midnight 1AM EST., we will be united with churches across the country in prayer to end abortion and to restore God's blessings of Life and Religious Liberty in America. America needs the Blessed Mother s intercession!! The National Night of Prayer for Life is a prayer service consisting of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Rosary, prayer to St. Michael, silent prayer and hymns. Let us come together to pray in Unity, and hold the Unborn up to Our Blessed Mother.
