Roger Cary Sounds quite confusing doesn t it? The month of July is upon us and we have much (as Americans) to celebrate. On the fourth we celebrate our independence as a country. This is not the day we became truly free, it is the day independence was declared by those who gathered in Philadelphia. The war for Independence which had begun in 1775 would not end and solidify our independence until What could this have to do with our understanding of a Christian life? I would suggest that as we reflect on this we look into our own life. The Apostle Paul tells the church in Galatia, You were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. (Gal. 5:13 NRSV) According to Paul our freedom is only good if we accept responsibility and take full accountability for it. If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. (Gal. 5:15 NRSV) Freedom s only good as long as we act rightly upon this freedom, offering and sharing it with all that we encounter. Freedom then, our freedom in Christ, and in our own community can only be truly achieved through acts of love and kindness (charity) to each other. Maybe this is why it is so difficult to live this freedom out in real ways. To agree that independence requires our dependence on something much greater than our own understanding. When we walk with the Lord, in the light of his word ; this opening stanza from the hymn Trust and Obey has often been used to deny an independence based on Jesus Christ and yet immediately it tells us to look to Jesus and depend on him for our independence. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. Jn. 1:1-5 NRSV We enter summer with a longer period of daylight. This allows each of us less excuse to bring the darkness of oppression to others, instead offering the light of freedom and independence. Let anyone who is thirsty come to me Jesus continues in John 7:37c. Wow, anyone, not those you or I may want to keep out, anyone is offered this drink. And with this Jesus creates a war within our own lives as we fight for independence from sin and move to dependence on the grace of God. Trusting and hearing God tell us to go, love thy neighbor as thyself. Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 The battle will be personal and difficult. Jesus tells us that he sends us out like sheep to the wolves. We must fight not to become one of the wolves ourselves. Real independence then requires dependence on God s mercy and grace to continue to walk this and lead others to lasting discipleship. We look forward to seeing you Sunday mornings as we continue our series No Perfect people Allowed. June 29-Abrahms and Isaac; July 6-Isaac s Servant and Isaac s Marriage; July 13-The Twins, Esau and Jacob; July 20-Jacob s Struggle; July 27-Deceit in the marriage of Jacob. The texts are found on the calendar insert. All are from Genesis. May you come prepared to experience God in concrete ways that speak to you. 5 Mark Your Calendars Sister s In Spirit will once again be hosting the Beth Moore Simulcast at Fairfax United Methodist Church!! Event will run from 8:30 am 3:15 pm More details coming soon! News from the Trustees/Finance Committee The church roof is being re-shingled at the time of printing this newsletter. Our insurance will cover the replacement costs, except for the $1,000 deductible. Our weekly church offerings have already started to suffer from the summer slump, so the Finance Committee is asking that you prayerfully reach into your pockets for a few extra dollars to help the church meet this added unplanned expense. You may indicate on your check that it s being given towards the roof project. If you have any questions concerning the expense, you may contact Trustee Chairman Roger Southard at He will have more information shortly. Travelers keep up with regular offerings by giving electronically... e-giving Just as you rely upon receiving income on a regular basis, Fairfax United Methodist Church relies on your regular contributions. Fairfax UMC appreciates the efforts of congregation members to make consistent donations throughout the year especially during popular winter and summer travel periods. Would you find it helpful to have your offerings debited directly from your bank account as you probably do with other obligations? To assist you, the church is now providing a convenient electronic giving option for setting up regular contributions. Simply complete and return an electronic giving Authorization Form to get started. Authorization Forms may be picked up in the office (or copy the form on the next page). You can contact the church office or Suzanne Southard ( ), Jayne Martin ( ), or Danny Kemerling ( ).
