Roger Cary September is a month filled with many things. Our youth and children have returned to their studies (along with teachers, aides, and many support persons), Labor Day happens to fall on September 1 this year. Some scholars who researched cuneiform writings and data suggest that Jesus birth occurred during a harvest month (August or September). As I reflect on both of these occurrences I begin to see how the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month (15 September) flows along with these celebrations. Jesus came to show love to all. In his earthly ministry he often went out of his way to share the good news with the stranger, the immigrant, and/or the foreigner. In those days, much like today, the foreigner was often relegated to manual labor, those jobs and activities few if any of the chosen people would immerse themselves in. Often these jobs were considered unclean and so no self-respecting person who considered themselves to one of the chosen ones would have anything to do with it other than to own the business. Without the birth and life of Jesus many would still be considered unworthy of God s mercy and grace, especially those whose hands were scarred, bloody, and calloused from labor others would not engage in. Jesus though, taught that all were welcome in his Father s kingdom, not only did he teach this through words but more importantly he taught this through his actions, a life lived in caring for all he encountered. For Jesus, each person he encountered became his neighbor, his friend, one worthy of his time and his gifts. When those of his own nationality found this disagreeable and asked him who really was his neighbor his answer was cryptic, he told a parable instead of giving a straight answer. The parable was about a Samaritan who cared for someone else when others refused. (Lk. 10:29-37) This parable is the lived out example of Jesus requirements (commandments), You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. (Lk. 10:27, Mt. 22:37-40, Mk. 22:33) The neighbor in this parable likely was much different than the Israelites who had settled in the land and yet Jesus reminds them this is how love is truly shown, caring for those who are different along with those who are similar. Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 In 1 John 3:14-18 we are told: We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God s love abide in anyone who has the world s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. As we enjoy the month of September, let it be a time to redefine who our neighbors are based on how Jesus taught us and through the words found in scripture. Let us celebrate the richness that comes from a diverse Church filled with all of God s creation as we call upon the Holy Spirit to enlighten us to new possibilities around us. Be blessed through September as we share together each week the good news of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Helping Hands of Friendship Do you need some help with a small project! 5 Esther Southard had a great view from her house as the church roof was re-shingled due to the hail storm on May 10. We thank her for her pictures as the men worked on the very top! Dear UMC Family, Thank you for giving us the opportunity to attend camp again this summer. We all went to Robin Hood camp at Camp Galilee where we learned archery, played Capture the Flag and had shaving cream wars among many other fun things. We studied the gospels and learned about Paul s teachings. We had fun and made friendships and memories that will last forever. Mickayla, Karri, Trey and Ben Bowling PPR Committee Meeting Wednesday, September 3 at 7:00 pm 2014 Charge Conference On Sunday, November 2nd, at 3:00 pm, we will hosting our charge conference here at Fairfax UMC. Mark your calendars!

6 People often ask, What exactly is a Stephen Minister? One way to put it is that Stephen Minister are the After People. Stephen Ministers are there:...after the phone call you hoped you d never get....after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life....after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you ve held at bay come crashing in on you....after the doctor says, I m sorry, but there s nothing more we can do. When: Saturday, October 4, :00 am 1:00 pm (check-in and on-site registration begin at 8:00 am) Where: First Lutheran Church 1551 S. 70th St. Lincoln, NE Cost: $15 per person, or $50 per congregation (four or more) Pastors want to provide care to everyone who needs it but they can t do it alone. Equipping laypeople to minister to hurting people is a highly effective and biblical way to bridge the gap and ensure that those in need of Christ-centered care receive it. Christ at work in and through gifted, trained lay caregivers that s the Stephen Ministry vision! This half-day event will show how to make that vision a reality. You and your team will gain hands-on ministry skills through a sample of Stephen Minister training, deepen your vision for care and outreach, and learn how to bring the life-changing benefits of Stephen Ministry to your congregation. If we can get four of more people who would like to attend, we can get the reduced rate of $50. Please let the church office or Pastor Roger know if you would like to attend and we will register the whole group together!!...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, Welcome to you new home....after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away and the house suddenly seems empty....after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away....after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible....after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck....after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out. Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

7 Sister s In Spirit will once again be hosting Beth Moore s Live Simulcast at Fairfax United Methodist Church!! Saturday, September 13, 8:30 am-3:15 pm Tickets $20 ea. (includes lunch) Tickets are available through the church office , umc@fairfaxmo.net, or mail to Fairfax UMC, PO Box 318, Fairfax MO (checks payable to Sister sinspirit), or any members of the team: Charla Graves (Fairfax), Deb Johnson (Rock Port), Regina Quimby & Cathy Riggins (Westboro), Ruth Piper (Savannah), and Karra Smith (Mound City). Foods Resource Bank Annual Gathering Bob and Amy Sefrit attended the Foods Resource Bank Annual Gathering in Lenexa, Kansas, on Saturday August 2nd. They shared the following information: Special guests of FRB were people who worked with FRB projects in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. To hear these people speak was the high point of the day. Some of the slides shown made quite an impression. One guest had a slide of a family s meal 5 years ago compared to a meal today. The first slide showed bowls of water mixed with some flour, the total of one potato diced in the large bowls. Five years later, vegetables, fruits and meat were on the table. Another slide showed a dry river bed and barren surroundings, several years later a pond held water saved from the rainy season and the surroundings were green with trees and other vegetation. Projects such as these are made possible by FRB. Christian organizations such as UMCOR are already in the areas; community members assess their needs and apply to FRB for help. In a break out session, the pastor from Kenya stated: I had been telling my congregation that byand-by things would be good, God would take care of us in Heaven. Then I finally realized that God wanted us to have good things now; we did not have to wait until we got to heaven to have enough food, water and a decent life. In his area people were walking 12 miles one way for water. Now they have water within one mile of their homes. Being freed from the daily walk for water, people now use the gifts and talents God has given them to improve their communities. Food is abundant and other communities are coming to see what has been happening. Now 90 communities are involved in that particular project. This is only a small portion of what we experienced that day. We do want you to know that 100% of what you give to the Foods Resource Bank is used to improve the lives of so many people. We must do all we can to supply the needs of those around us in our own community. At the same time we were told that we have hunger in the U.S. but it is not like the hunger in 3rd World Countries. Those people are starving.

8 2014 Fairfax Fair UMM Rides The family of Doris Taylor and The Fairfax United Methodist Church family extend a huge and sincere thank you to Robin Lewis for sharing her time and talent by painting the nursery murals for us. The Nursery depicts the interior of Noah's Ark with many lovable animals on the inside and a view of the exterior of the ark from the sanctuary. We have already witnessed the joy it brings to the children who visit it, and it will continue to be a blessing for future generations. We realize that it was a big sacrifice of personal and family time and we are very grateful. We also extend our thanks to Mike Lewis for sharing Robin with us and for helping to install the wooden panels that make up the exterior of the ark. We also extend our thanks to Harry Combs for the donation of the wood and for his efforts in cutting the port holes for the ark. You have a generous and talented family and we appreciate so much the sharing of your gifts with us!
