Roger Cary The cold winds and sour weather of winter have invaded northwest Missouri. Like it or not, this is a yearly occurrence in this part of the world. Yet this is also a time of rest; rest for the land, rest for those engaged in agriculture, rest for before the journey we will be sent on by Christ himself, to bring life and hope to a world who see s little good ahead of them. In order to prepare for this journey, we enter a time of reflection ourselves, a time of preparation of our own soul and spirit. Yes, friends, it is that time of year again in which we are called to look inwardly and set right the things we have been lax in over the past year. Our own heritage, that of Methodists, calls us to spend much more time engaged in the spiritual disciplines of prayer, studying scripture, and being accountable to each other. The last one is likely the one each of us have the most difficulty with. It is hard to share our life with the person in the next pew who may not be a part of our maternal or paternal family. I want to say that it may seem difficult and yet we do this often without even recognizing it. When we ask for prayers, or someone intercedes on our behalf with God we are being accountable to one another. St. Paul tells us to lift one another up, to bear each other s burdens. I want to commend each of you for accomplishing this throughout the time I have been appointed to be in service with you. As part of this ongoing reflection we begin on February 10, 2016 with our Ash Wednesday service at 5:30 pm. Yes, Lent begins early with Resurrection Sunday occurring on March 27. During the time of Lent, we will be engaging a six-week study authored by Rev. Rob Renfroe titled A Way Through the Wilderness: Growing in Faith when Life is Hard. Along with that Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 there will be a sermon series based on these lessons. This is a reminder that we are sent into the wilderness just as Jesus was in preparation for ministry, to prepare ourselves to be sent just as Jesus was sent to us. The series will have the following weekly sermon titles based on the scriptures cited: 1. No Way Out of the Wilderness (February 14) Deuteronomy 8:2-4 Matthew 4: Entering the Wilderness (February 21) Genesis 3:23-24a James 1:2-4 Luke 22: Walking with Others in the Wilderness (February 28) Numbers 10:30-31 Galatians 6:2 Matthew 22: Walking with God in the Wilderness (March 6) Jeremiah 29: Corinthians 12:9-10 John 12: Avoiding Wrong Turns in the Wilderness (March 13) Exodus 14:11-12 Philippians 4:10-14 John 16: Coming Out of the Wilderness (March 20) Joshua 2:5-7 Hebrews 4:1-3 Matthew 11:28-30 March 27, 2016-Easter/Resurrection Sunday May you begin to prepare your hearts and minds to receive God s word as it is proclaimed. Amen. Tarkio/Fairfax/Westboro Food Pantry November numbers: 119 individuals/60 families. December numbers: 156 Individuals/70 families. 8 FAIRFAX MESSENGER FEBRUARY 2016 Fairfax United Methodist Church 305 N. Broadway P.O. Box 318 Fairfax, MO Address Service Requested Dear Friends in Fairfax, JANUARY ~ 2016 ~ THANKS RE-CENTER. This is often on my Google maps screen as I travel, especially if I have needed to scroll in for more details or out for a larger perspective. With a touch of my finger, the screen is indeed re-centered, and the journey continues. This analogy seems to fit the New Year as well! After the hustle and bustle of holiday plans and travel, it has felt good to be at home and get my bearings again ~ to re-center. After some significant times with the Lord, I am recharged and poised with purpose as I look to the opportunities God has for ministry with MKs this semester! Thank you for your partnership! Financial gifts will help cover the January travel to Texas for LeTourneau s Missions Emphasis Week! I m excited to connect with several MKs there particularly, whom I have gotten to know. Please pray for my workshop on transition: preparation, presentation, good interactions. Thanks! Thank you too for prayers as I traveled to TX and NC for Christmas ~ it was a special family time, and an uneventful journey traffic/travel-wise. Praying your New Year is re-centered in the One who gives us life and hope. Serving Him with you, - Judy Keith Mu Kappa Regional Coordinator, 1301 E. 123rd Terr. #C, Olathe, KS 66061,
