Contact: Website: P R E S I D E N T S C O R N E R SHED TALK Page 2 Vol 4 No5 Hi Shedders, The past month has been a busy one in setting up the shed so that workshops could commence. Since the Opening, we have had the challenge to remove all of our tools equipment and materials from the Hamlyn Harris Building where we have had our temporary workshop for the last 18 months. It is incredible how much we have gathered in that short period of time. Now that that job is complete, we have purchased a second shipping container and have lifted both with a 40 ton crane over the building to rest on their new foundations on the northern side of our building. Men have been busy welding together new racks for the storage of our timber and other materials. Thank you to all who have cheerfully worked to move all the gear. Workshops The workshops commenced in the new building on Tuesday 7 th May. This was another milestone as much work and planning had to be done to set up for this to progress. Our traditional basic woodworking course has begun on Tuesdays from 8.00am to noon and the intermediate group on Wednesdays. We are fortunate to have six wood lathes which are currently being set up and tools prepared. It is anticipated that a basic class in wood turning will commence in July. Men have commenced preparing projects for sale at the Mt Gravatt Show to be held on 28 th and 29 th July. We will be seeking your help to run these displays across that weekend. Thanks again to the guys for all their assistance. Recreation Room The recreation room is being used extensively for cups of tea and coffee with a great deal of chatter bouncing off the walls. Very soon we will have our small group activities rostered to use this space. I am looking forward to the time when this room is actively used on a daily basis for a range of productive activities, even cards and board games. Happy Shedding Brian Wheeler President The reason for Brian's absence from the monthly social meeting was the celebration of his Mother, Norah's 100th birthday. This was held at the Anglican Church Hall in Gatton on the 5th May. Norah celebrated with family and friends who travelled from all parts of Australia to be with her on this momentous occasion. 2

Vol. 4 Number 5 Page 3 C O M M U N I T Y P R O J E C T S Last meeting I counted at least 20 more pairs of glasses in the box collecting for the Lions Overseas Project.. Could not find any glass eyes though! Well done! Editor. ***********************************************. Mt Gravatt Men s Shed to the rescue. The need. To source and install commercial type stainless steel sinks and benches to second hand, yet to be repaired, commercial dishwasher. The location. A nut farm and venue for community campers from kids to adults, 35 camps a year, with one thing in common, little or no funds. Hence NOT a commercial site. We were able to source 1 x big sink bench from a shopfitter who had done a big commercial refurbishment and another straight flat bench and shelf from willing donor. Materials for the customized RHS frames and fittings needed to be purchased along with a few sundry items. These were cut, welded, ground and primed by Rod Larkin,Ross Dallas, Leo Zorzini, and Roger Medland in the Hamlyn Harris building in and was delivered and installed and made fully operational for a 10 day camp for 56 people in late November, and many camps since. One of the members cooked on the camp and can reliably report that the dishwasher and benches are the cause of much satisfaction. Sincere thanks to Rod and his crew. Roger Medland. Our Vision To provide a facility where men of all ages can feel comfortable and gather together to spend time socially, as well as in a practical manner, by participating in constructive endeavors that develop self esteem. Left: Rod Larkin models the latest safety gear. Centre: the final product Right: the campsite Elwyn Jackson Welfare Co-coordinator or Our men s shed membership is continuing to increase. We now have 211 registered members and with 22 visitors {prospective members} attend our last monthly meeting. With our shed officially opened there are many tasks that have to be completed in order to have the shed fully functional. Your Management Committee and Shed Operations Committee continues to ask all members to express their preferences as to daily, weekly or monthly activities in the shed in order for forward planning to be effective. Do you want to attend monthly meetings only, be involved in woodwork, tin work, leatherwork, welding, play cards, watch a movie, join an interest group or just enjoy a chat over a cup of tea or coffee. A number of our members are presently in rehabilitation at home after illness or hospitalisation. Jeffrey Childs, Ian Fox, George Humphreys, Rick Londsdale, Graeme Robbins and George Underwood. It was great to see Les Parker and Mick Wendt return to our monthly meeting. Robert Bushell is having treatment for a back condition and Chris Lloyd to have surgery on 17/05/2013.Remember to contact your Welfare Committee if you or a member you know is sick at home or in hospital and if assistance is needed. We will help you where possible or practical. We are also able to assist you in arranging transport for you to attend monthly meetings or functions. 3 WELFARE

Page 4 Vol 4No 5 Food for thought Do we need reminding about how much things cost!! All these examples do NOT imply that petrol is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are. The last one might shock the socks off you. Think a litre of petrol is expensive? Can of Caffeine Drink, 250ml, $ $11.80 per litre! Cough Mixture, 200ml, $ $ per litre! Day Cream, 50ml, $ $ per litre! Rum, 1250ml, $ $40.80 per litre! Eye Drops, 15ml, $ $ per litre! Perfume, 50ml, $29... $ per litre! And this is the REAL KICKER. Bottled water, 375ml, $ $7.86 per litre! Someone calculated the cost of the ink at, you won't believe it but it's true; $ A LITRE!!! NOW YOU KNOW! (Thanks to Les Watermeyer) 7 am to 12 noon Last walkers start at 11 am Entries Close: 11 am on the day Entries $15 per person. Dogs free! Major Beneficiary: Meals on Wheels All the details and entry form at Rotary Club of Mt Gravatt is a platinum sponsor of the Shed We think we know what it might be! One of our members used to work at the Tannery which used to be near Kelvin Grove Road. He remembers layers of leather being put into a similar object, each layer being covered in glue. The setup was then pressed to form the sole of a shoe. Sounds very reasonable to me. What do you think? Any other ideas? 4

NOTICE BOARD Page 5 Vol 4 No5 June Meeting The June Social Meeting of the Shed will be held on Monday, 3rd June at 10:30 for 11:00 am in the Community Hall of the Mt Gravatt Show Grounds. Guest Speaker for the meeting is Joe Wilson, who, having spent a lot of his working life as a draftsman and designer for BCC, in 1988 joined a business restoring cars. In 1992, he was awarded a Churchill Scholarship to study his craft overseas. He is currently working on a 1937 Lancia which recently had a fuel line fire. MEMBERSHIP is currently 211 members. New members who had applications accepted at the May Committee Meeting were Nat Belluomini, Jim Pollock, Michael Hayes, Bill Hayes, Nick Possingham, Bol Dul, Vince Petrie, Mervyn Crow, Davey Rowlands, Stephen Ord, Robert Johnson, Peter Barrett, Maurice Page, Timothy Bale, Peter Fussell, Clyde Armstrong The Shed warmly welcomes these new members. Here are two articles from the issue prior to the current one which some members may be interested in! 5

May Meeting Report Chairman Lance Roberts opened meeting at 11 am with Shed Song and the National Anthem. Evacuation routes and Assembly points were emphasized while members were reminded No ticket, No lunch!. Once again, numbers were well in excess of 100 and apologies were read. Vice-president Keith Samuels ( standing in for Brian Wheeler) welcomed and introduced new members to the Shed. Keith thanked the scores of helpers who made themselves available to help in setting up and dismantling the Opening Ceremony. The Shed is now moving to fully open mode. (See timetable pg 8). Appeal made for at least 10 supervisors for the Shed to enable a once per fortnight roster to be possible. Members MUST sign-on. Keith mentioned the moving by crane of the two storage containers to their permanent berth. Opening Committee Chairman Bart McKnight provided an opening ceremony report and thanked all who had contributed and complimented the guitar group and choir as well as those who had provided display items. Kevin Schneidewin reported on the raffle takings of $4000 and thanked all who helped. The seller of the most tickets was Don Ritchie who received a dinner for 2 at Southern Community Sports Club and membership for Welfare Coordinator Elwyn Jackson welcomed 22 visitors, reported on members in rehabilitation from illness and congratulated members having a birthday in May. He spoke about organising the Christmas break-up for the Shed and appealed to members for ideas. Graeme Smith reported that of provision for payments by EFTPOS had been investigated and rejected as too costly. Show Society has requested volunteers to help to paint Horse Jumps and refurbishment of the Art Centre for Show in July. Volunteers are also required for LIONS Extravaganza to help with car Page 6 Vol 4 No5 parking on 24th and 26th May. Rotary would appreciate help in setting up their BOOKFEST on Fi 25th May and packing up on Sunday 26th May. John Wicks asked for members wanting to join groups to sign-up, demonstrated how to get onto the web-site and introduced John Westwood, president of QLD MOVIE MAKERS INC. who presented Keith with a copy of movie made of the Opening Ceremony at the Shed. DVD was shown at lunch time. Dick Bennett advised members of a article in Seniors Magazine, Brisbane, (pg33), reporting the Shed Opening and later spoke of BSOL. Ian Young thanked Bunnings for opportunity for a recent BBQ which made $1200. Bill Semple from the building committee reported on the work still to be done to complete the out-fitting of the Shed. He also reported that Bob Pope had resigned from the Committee for health and mobility problems. (It would be impossible to catalogue the time, the effort, the knowledge and the experience that Bob brought to the building of this Shed. It would be fair to say that without his assistance we would be nowhere near where we currently are. It was very fitting that Bob was awarded a Life Membership at the Opening Ceremony. Editor) Ron Bowden spoke on Shed shirts and caps. Guest Speaker was Graeme Stratton, a Brisbane Marine Pilot who worked in the past for P&O and ESSO. He gave a very interesting illustrated account of the piloting history of Moreton Bay, the various channels in the Bay, the development of the piloting station at Mooloolaba and the role of a pilot in vessels from 50 m long to massive aircraft carriers. Graeme answered a multitude of questions from the audience and put to rest the roles of the Captain and the Pilot in a ship. The pilot is in charge of the ship, the captain commands the ship. Now you know! Left: Graeme explains the role of a pilot on the bridge of the Pacific Dawn Right: Graeme contrasted the bulk of a modern cruise ship with that of the Titanic 6

JULY OUTING. At our May social meeting I asked for a show of hands regarding a luncheon at the Springwood Hotel.
