Generate more funds for Mt Gravatt Men s Shed Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt/Mansfield recently donated $10,000 to boost the funds for the new building. Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt will donate $1,000 for every property that is sold by them, and referred by a member of the Mt Gravatt Men s Shed. If you know of anyone who is thinking of selling their property, please contact Bill Hooper on or For new property managements referred by the Club, Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt will donate $250 to the Club funds. In fact, you may remember Bob Pope had presented a concept drawing which we displayed at the first open meeting held on 17 th May The building has developed over the ensuing period. You would have seen the Architect drawings which indicate much more detail and functionality. On February 14 th 2012, some of the men were present to see the earth move. Within a few hours, the site was levelled and the timber boxing installed on two sides. By the time you read this it is possible that the concrete floor will be laid weather permitting. John Wicks is keeping a video diary as well as a still camera record of the construction for our history The Sod Turning Ceremony was very successful. Everyone seemed to enjoy the congenial atmosphere. The official visitors were very satisfied with the number who turned out. Did you see in the Southern Star that 300 people were there? We are quite happy with this slight exaggeration. The food was great thanks to the members of St. Bartholomew s Anglican Church together with the cooking from the wives of some of our members. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the small group of members who organised the day so extraordinarily splendiferous. Congratulations go to Barry Williams, Brian Wandel, Bill Simpson, John Wicks and Tom Begg. I also would like to give a pat on the back to the guys who have been working so harmoniously to produce quality projects within the shed. Bert Dean is always at it building a work bench ( See photo pg 4) or constructing doors or table tops. The shadow boards are a work of art thanks to a team led by Dave Bowes, Rod Larkin, Tus van Genderen, Brian Sherman, David Robinson and Geoff O Connor. However, John Cory spent part of his Christmas holiday painting shadows. How is this for a pastime? Just ask John. John s steady hand painting the shadow boards bears witness to his patience and tenacity. ( See photo pg 3) Thank you to all these men who demonstrate a clear direction for the future of our shed. 3 Page 3, Vol 3 No 2 C O M M U N I T Y P R O J E C T S The Management Committee has decided to suspend external community projects while the Shed is under construction. The reason for the decision is that a very large proportion of members participating in external community projects are now volunteering their time and expertise to help in the Shed construction and fitting out. However, if you are a member of the Shed, and are in need of help, do not hesitate to approach co-ordinator Arthur Muhl. Arthur Muhl John Cory, Geoff O'Connor, David Robinson, Brian Sherman with Shadow Board WELFARE Our Vision To provide a facility where men of all ages can feel comfortable and gather together to spend time socially, as well as in a practical manner, by participating in constructive endeavors that develop self esteem. What an exciting time we are in at the moment with our Men s Shed. There is much work to be done and many decisions to be made before completion. It is almost overwhelming at times to witness the comradeship and the team work displayed for this project to be completed. Our Men s shed fellowship to date has established many friendships that would last a lifetime. REMEMBER TO GAIN A FRIEND WE MUST BE FRIEND Please contact me if you need assistance. Your Welfare Committee will make contact, visit, or will endeavour to meet immediate needs where practical or possible. 4 Food for thought! Page 4 Vol 3 No 2 Plans for Future Shed Meetings Next General Meeting is on Monday, 5th March in the Community Hall at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds 11:00 am for 11:30 start. BBQ and Tea/Coffee is now $5 The guest speaker for this meeting will be the Hon. John Mickel, MP for Logan and retiring Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Anticipate that he will give an interesting, informative, light-hearted address on the duties of the Speaker of the House. We hope that he will be able to join us for lunch so he can get to meet members of the Shed. Next Management Committee meeting is on 14th March. Do not forget breakfast with the Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, on 28th March( see pg2) * Make a note of 11:00 am Monday April 2nd for the April General Meeting. Friendship is something special, it cannot be bought or sold. Its value is far greater than silver or even gold. When things get rough, they always seem to understand. Without being asked they comfort and lend a helping hand. Holding you up, when you think you would fall. No matter what, they will help you through it all. Friends lift you up when you are feeling low. They take you in, when you have no place to go. Never ever take things for granted. For you can never re-sow the seed that has already been planted. Take this to heart and never let it be undone. In order to make and keep a friend you must first be one. Honesty is something that should always be your aim. With lies wounds may heal, but nothing is ever the same. So cherish your friendship and always be sincere. Open up your heart and it will never disappear. 5 Page 5 Vol 3 No 2 Some miscellaneous matters! Bert Dean ( on right) being thanked by Barry Williams for the workbench he has constructed for the Shed. I did not take long for it to be put to use! Certificate and accompanying medal awarded to the Shed on Australia Day Elwyn and Dell Jackson received individual awards as did Brian Wheeler. At the February Shed meeting, Michael Fox (centre) from Mt. Gravatt Environmental group presents a certificate of appreciation to Treasurer (Barry Williams (on the left ) and Workshop Supervisor ( Dave Bowes) for their work in organising, designing and coordination of the construction of bird and possum boxes to complement the wildlife corridor which the Environmental Group is establishing. 5

6 Page 6 Vol3 No 2 February Shed Meeting A crowd of nearly 100 attended the February meeting. General business included a presentation by the Environmental Group, commendation of members efforts in developing the workshop for the Shed, a draft proposal for the formation of interest groups, a presentation by Committee member Ron Bowden on how to acquire one of the Shed T-shirts which are now available. The progress of the construction of the Shed was outlined, Norm Osborne being commended on the Induction Program for volunteers helping in the construction process. The guest Speaker was Michelle Nielsen whose presentation on ways of losing weight through diet and exercise was well received by members. There were comments that the discussion and participation of members was one of the most lively that we have had. Michelle represented the Greater Metro South Brisbane Medicare Ltd which the Queensland Government has commissioned to provide a program titled Lighten Up and Living Strong. In her illustrated presentation, Michelle outlined the program, how to enroll in it, expanded on the 10 stages of the program and, in the slides, provided on the spot advice regarding diet and exercise. She emphasized the importance of long and short term goalsetting, reading nutrition labels, plate portions, and desirable physical activity. As the Federal Government is tying funding for Men s Sheds to an involvement in men s health, programs like this one which aim at providing permanent lifestyle improvement are very relevant.
