One of a number of things that I have appreciated during this year has been getting to know more of you, my fellow shedders, better. It has been my privilege to hear the stories and experiences of so many of you. For me one of the strengths of our shed is how members socially interact with and support each other. Another thing that has impressed me week on week is the willingness of our men to share their amazing range of skills and experience with other men. Whether it is an activity in the recreation area or in the workshop my sense is that activity leaders are getting joy from working to support their mates to learn or further develop skills. Talking to men about what they are making, what they are learning or what they are doing, I experience the sense of satisfaction that their achievements give them. Then when you recognise that more than half our members volunteer their time, energy and expertise to keep our Shed and its activities open and operating you see another strength of our shed. This is impressive and something of which we can be proud. Our Annual Reports highlight all that is being done around the shed and I trust that you take the opportunity to read through the report document when it is distributed. Finally, with the end of the year approaching can I again encourage you to come along to our special activities - Our AGM and election of Officers (5th November), Our Members and Wives/Partners Christmas Lunch which will be held on 30th November, and our Special Christmas Social (Members only) Meeting on the 3rd December. I look forward to continuing to see you at the Shed. Peter Lindsay OUR ANNUAL RAFFLE is running. Tickets are $2.00 each and come in books of 10. Please pick up and pay for your book, or books from the Office. The drawing will be on 3rd December

4 Page 4 MEMORIAL SERVICE 29 SEPTEMBER 2018 The inaugural Memorial Service to honour departed members was held on Saturday 29 th September Over 120 people gathered together in the Recreation Room with family and Shed Members to take 1 part in what was a significant meeting to honour our past members. The Thanksgiving Service was conducted by our Spiritual Patron, Bishop Doug Stevens. To commence the service, a Scottish Piper, Andrew Hall dressed in his traditional costume led the procession of the Australian, Queensland and MGMS flags. This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the Shed Song accompanied by our Shed band and led by our Shed choristers. Our three Shed Patrons, Dr. Brian Kable, Associate Professor Grant Devilly and The Right Reverend Dr Doug Stevens assisted by other Members, presented symbols representing the ideals of our organisation and their significant meaning was explained and interpreted by Ken Mihill. During the service, the names of all known departed members since our organisation commenced in November 2009 were read out. Photos of the departed members were 2 beamed on to our new large projection screen from our new data projector which was installed only the week before. After the Service the piper led the flag bearers and the families of the departed to the Memorial Walk where each family, assisted by Shed members, laid a small plaque in honour of their loved-one. In total, fourteen plaques were laid. (See photos next page). At the conclusion of the Service, a scrumptious afternoon tea was provided by a small team of ladies. Over thirty members took significant parts in the Service which was 3 created to pay respect to our departed and will provide a lasting memory through the Memorial Walk. This Service could well become another annual tradition of our Shed. A Memorial Booklet of the Service was presented to all family members. A special feature was a page for each departed member that had been written by the family. The page also included the wording that is depicted on the plaque together with a photo of the departed member. Brian Wheeler

To see these grown men pretending they were 10 year olds, would have looked odd if you were coming into the Shed for the first time. But there was a purpose, this walking around inside and outside the Recreation Room. As Geoff Halter (line leader) said afterwards the dumb-bell weights held up for so long was not an easy task. The second time around Geoff chose lighter dumb-bells (!) 9 Page 9 CIRCLE OF MEN 2 1 Our scheduled guest speaker at Sausage Sizzle day, 15 October, was actually two speakers from Circle of Men. The first was Kevin James (fig 1) who spoke of the concept and Peter James (fig 2), President of Circle of Men Inc. gave more examples and explained how men like ourselves might care to become involved. We asked Peter if he could send some more information on the work of Circle of Men. His response follows. CIRCLE OF MEN COMPANIONSHIP PROGRAM. Meetings weekly to support and nurture men living in Aged Care. A weekly companionship program where dedicated trained volunteers gather in groups to support and nurture men living in nursing homes. Circle Of Men is just that, men of all ages coming together in a circle sharing their songs and stories, their joys and sorrows, their hopes and fears, their similarities and their differences. It's life sustaining for all concerned. It is also a powerful practice that greatly restores and rejuvenates our elders who all too often find themselves alone, isolated and unloved at this most vulnerable stage of life. We are with you, someone to turn to, for the rest of your life. - That is the promise and privilege of being part of Circle of Men companionship program. Circle of Men is a circle of trust. Our volunteers develop skills to firstly care for themselves and each other before offering help to others. Aside from having a great deal of fun they learn to trust and depend upon one another creating a deeper sense of purpose and direction in their own lives. For further information, please contact: Kev James [Brisbane South]: David Phillips [Redlands City]: , OR John Simpson: [COM President]: WHO ARE THE WORKSHOP GROUP LEADERS? 10 Page 10 LOCAL STATE MEMBER VISITS THE SHED On Wednesday, September 26, Corinne McMillan, State Member for Mansfield, presented an address during the Parliamentary time that highlighted the Mt Gravatt Men s Shed. Corinne noted the number of members as well as the Shed s commitments to the surrounding community where members come from around 40 different postcodes. Corinne presented a copy of the Hansard Record of her speech. (Copies of Corinne s address are available from the Shed Secretary). Before all of the above, the State Gambling Community Benefit Fund granted the Shed the necessary money to improve the Shed s Recreation Room video display. The Grant document was prepared by the Shed Treasurer, Jim Pollock. After the arrival of the data projector and 120 electrically operated screen, John van Eyk and friend installed the items in time for the Shed Memorial Service on Saturday September 29. There is a small amount of finishing work to clean up the exposed wiring and attach a security cable. Currently, the data projector is not connected to the TV antenna cable- perhaps, a Shed State of Origin night in coming years. Corrine McMillan was also in support of the Shed s Grant. As can be seen, Shed President, Peter Lindsay and other members were present for Corinne s visit to inspect the video installation and Peter showed her some of the other Shed activities such as cartooning and the workshop. 11 Page 11 TRAVEL GROUP S CRUISE TO PNG Our twenty strong cruise group returned home Friday 19 October after a very interesting and entertaining ten days of travel to the area north of the New Guinea mainland. We landed at Alotau in the Milne Bay area where the Japanese were first defeated in battle. Next we visited Kitava a totally unspoiled paradise, the inhabitants of which have very little contact with the outside world and live as have done for thousands of years. Next day we docked at Rabaul which was destroyed by a volcano some years age and rebuilt further away from the still active mountain. There were some more interesting war time relics and war graves but unfortunately whilst the graves are well maintained by Australia the museum pieces are slowly disappearing from lack of conservation. Next stop Kiriwina Island is another pristine coral cay inhabited by a couple of thousand locals who survive on what they can harvest from the natural environment, no shops, one truck, no way to earn money except from selling us shells and carvings. Their craftmanship is exceptional, but not sure how they will get to spend the money earned? Last stop Conflict Island is a commercial operation owned by an obviously very rich person (21 islands all told). It has no permanent inhabitants. It is an extremely beautiful place - perfect water for snorkelling, magnificent coral, plenty of water gear for hire and plenty of food and beer etc. The ship travelled over some very deep water in the Bismarck Sea (7,600 metres) but our whole passage was on comfortable seas and good sunny skies. A memorable cruise, great social activity with good friends. Continued on Page 12 Kevin Schneidewin Photos: Steve Fluerty and Toni Ward
