SEPTEMBER 2011 HUACHUCA LODGE NO. 53 F & A M SIERRA VISTA, AZ

FROM THE EAST We have made it to September and had just a little bit of a brake during the hottest part of the summer, conferring just one degree in August, finally, for Brother Rick Pena whose degree work was postponed for two months due to work and the Monument fire. As we look forward towards the remaining four months of our Masonic year, we can expect a surge in degree work with two first degrees in September followed by at least one third degree in October. Additionally, I am told that there are at least three men who are working their petitions for the Masonic Degrees. This really puts the exclamation point on the need for more Brothers to learn ritual, or those who already know ritual but are currently absent, to step forward. This year, five brothers have carried the conferring load, and four carry the lectures. This is far from adequate and is burning out those who are working. Brothers, we need you. As we all know, there are several generation gaps between the WW2 generation that has carried Masonry for so many years, and the millennial generation who are waiting at our West gate. We should not look at them as a bother. Finally, Masonry is arising from its slumber and the men we raise today will lead this fraternity when we are no longer able to do so. We need to make this investment, and it requires a deposit from each of us. I ask you to question your own standing in the future of Freemasonry. Are you making your proper contribution or are you relying on others to do your share. Sadly, the latter seems to be more correct. Simply paying your dues each year, though appreciated, does not cover your debt to the Lodge and your brothers. In all probability, I will receive numerous s on the direct nature of this statement. Moving on to brighter topics, the kitchen stoves have been installed and are operational. These were provided by a donor and the money raised to will be utilized for additional kitchen upgrades, initially the drawers. The Lodge needs additional repairs to replace and upgrade worn out components and this will be done over time. We will be taking orders for bricks to place around the flag pole. This is an old opportunity which brother Jeff York has brought back to life. A brick can be purchased and designed with a Masonic symbol and a name. Older ones are in place at the base of the flag pole to give you an idea of what we are talking about. See Brother Jeff for an order form. The Panda Express event brought nearly $250 to the Lodge thanks to the support of all of you and the community at large. We need to continue our efforts to ensure we have the funds to keep the Lodge in working order. Many of you will be start receiving monthly calls starting in September. This is being done for a couple reasons. The first is due to communication problems we experienced during the monument fire. Problem one was caused by not having enough members to make the phone calls, and problem two was caused by not knowing who needed help and who didn t. The second reason for the calls to ensure that you know that the Lodge cares and is available to assist in whatever way you might need. A month or so ago one of our Brothers lost everything due to a fire at his house and the Lodge had no idea it had happened. If you feel very strongly that you do not want to be called, please let the secretary know and we will ensure your name is not included. Lastly, we are approaching elections. Move up night will happen in October, as usual. I would hope that every Mason would desire to participate in at least this portion of Lodge activities. Choosing you leaders is not only your right, but your responsibility. TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 2

FROM THE WEST Brethren, I recently had the pleasure of traveling to Oasis Lodge #52 in Tucson for a Wardens night consisting of a wonderful meal and a Fellow Craft Degree put on by mostly Wardens. The reception we received was truly warm like returning home after being away for sometime. The dinner was a catered by a company in Tucson I wish I new the name because it was really good, Mexican it was. As I ate surrounded by my friends and Brothers from our local Sister Lodges Tombstone Lodge #5, Campstone lodge #77, and my Mother Lodge Huachuca Lodge #53 what a cast of characters, two Masters, Wardens, the Mason of the year and numerous Officers and Brethren, enough to have official visits from all three Lodges. Being surrounded by these wonderful FROM THE SOUTH Greetings from the South It is an exciting time of the year, fall is near and the monsoon is in full swing. Soon the heat of summer will be gone and the rains will slow down. A perfect time for a picnic, a family picnic with friends and our Masonic brothers and sisters. I am calling for help from all who read this to support this event. Not just by attendance but help in getting the word out and even help in the planning and execution. Our last chance to finalize the planning and get ready to hold the Annual Masonic Family Picnic will be on September 11 in the dinning room of Camp Stone 77 and Huachuca 53 at Wilcox and Buffalo Soldier Trail in Sierra Vista. We need to get a projected headcount from the Chapters of Eastern Star, the 7 Masonic Lodges in the local area and all of the other Masonic organizations who will be men I reflected on what an honor and how blessed I am to have fallen in with this wonderful group of men to whom I look to for guidance and instruction. The Degree was most excellent, one of the best I have had the pleasure of seeing the Master and Officers were spot on and the Lecture oh my, it was splendid to say the least, delivered by a Brother whom I have the personal pleasure of knowing and our own Junior Warden WB. Bruce Wood. As I endeavor to learn the second degree lecture I hope I deliver it half as good as WB. Bruce does. As I close this months article I want to remind you about the pavers to surround the flag pole they should consist of your name title and the significant date for example Jeffrey K. York (line one) Master Mason (line two) September 16, 2009 (line three) they are $50.00 each I have two on order so far so if you want one please see me on or before the September stated meeting because I will be taking the first order to Tucson shortly there after... Fraternally, Jeffrey k. York attending. Everyone is invited to the planning committee meeting which will start at 2 PM and only last for approximately one hour. The picnic will be on the 17 th of September at 1100 AM with set up beginning at 800 AM. The meal will cost you a non perishable food item to be donated to the food locker and there will be a Chili Cook-off. A flyer and a report from the Planning Committee can be found later in this document. The most important thing about this event is to come and have a good time and meet and enjoy the company of all of our Masonic family. There will be games for children of all ages and plenty of food and drink. Don t forget to bring a friend it will be an opportunity to show them the Masonry is all about families and having a good time. For more information contact me at or the Senior Warden Jeffery York at Mark your calendars this will be a signature event for the entire Masonic Community. Fraternally with Brotherly Love Junior Warden Bruce F. Wood PM, KT, KSA TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 3

FROM THE DDGM The District #11 workshop held on August 13 was well attended and all Lodges were represented. The Grand Treasurer covered the year end financial report and although not all present were familiar with the workings I think they came away with a better appreciation for what is involved. I covered three Grand Lodge programs which is of interest to all lodges that will be submitting to Grand Lodge an application for consideration for an award. The next District workshop will be the end on November and will be hosted by Huachuca Lodge #53. I am available to assist lodges prior to that date working with the committee chairman for any Grand Lodge program and you will need to contact me so a date can be arranged. I will also try to include other lodge committee chairman to get other lodges involved. Don't forget the Grand Lodge Education Academy in Rio Rico on October See your Lodge secretary for registration form. Andrew Anderson DDGM District #11 Office Hours: The Secretary s office will be open at 1700 on lodge meeting nights and every 2nd Saturday from 0830 till FROM THE SECRETARY TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 4

MASONIC FAMILY Cochise Masonic High Twelve Club #703 The next Club meeting is September 9 at the SV Elks Lodge starting at 5:30 PM. We will again hold a joint meeting with Huachuca Shrine Club s which many are also High Twelvians. We will also welcome the new International President WB Sid Leluan of Tucson. WB Sid has supported this Club for the past seventeen years. The 36th Annual AZ State High Twelve Convention is scheduled for September 24, 2011 in Sun City Lodge #72 in Peoria, AZ. I can send via the registration forms and information on the hotel in the area just let me know you want it. I'll have a copy of the registration form at the September 9 meeting. Your Club donated to the Public Schools Committee of Camp Stone Lodge #77 money and supplies which were collected during the ice cream social held on July 30. We really enjoyed all the different ice cream and especially the toppings. Hope to see everyone at the September 9 meeting which starts at 5:30 PM. All Guest are welcomed. Andrew Anderson Club Secretary October 1 st Club meeting at Huachuca 53. Mark your calendar and join us at 8:30 am for breakfast. The rest of October will be practices for the Fall Reunion degree work. We will be present for the County Masonic picnic on September 17 th. Need a good Scottish Rite member, to cook up some chili for the cook-off? The Archie Pate Shrine Picnic was well attended at Veterans Memorial Park in Sierra Vista. Chief Rabban Roger Thomas had a nice time and was a good sport too. Looks like the park was a hit and we did setup and tear down in one day. I want to say thank you to all of the crew and the fine donations from Paul s Pub and the Landmark Café. Our next meeting will be with the Cochise High Twelve at the Elks Club at 5:30 on Sept 9 th. It should be a great fish fry meal, with our brothers and ladies. Sept 17 th is the Cochise County Masonic picnic, once again looking for a chili cook to represent the Huachuca Shrine Club, in the cook-off. Don t forget the Pote s Official Visit is October 15 the Elks Lodge 5:30pm. Bro. Harry Tungate will be our chef that night, serving roast beef and chicken entrees. 6 The West Gate As we initially approach Masonry, our thoughts are but gossamers, which reflect beautifully the innocent dew of a spring morning. The wisp like thoughts cling to the future brothers as they would on tendrils reaching up towards the tabernacle. The youth is coming, dear brothers. Life to our future youth is mired with specters at every corner. Death awaits the spirited thought and moral action. The doe may rest obsequious and content but the wolf of commonality seeks to wet his teeth with any manner of goodness. The fraternity will keep the wolves of our minds at bay. The youth are coming, dear brothers. Feral specters chase even predators of good conscience. All manner may seek admission through the west gate but only the fool would deny the existence of men in disguise. One small infection may cripple the man. We must all guard against those who might bring a dance macabre to our gates. Skeletal frames bound by no concept of unity and seek only to force their will and create a blackness of the soul. It is our fight, the moral fight. However, the youth is coming, dear brothers. As we all grow in the brotherhood, it only stands to reason that some may not desire our brand of moral teachings. Some may leave from our grounds never to tread foot on any season of our lives. Though seasons change and many things will rearrange, the doors are never locked to a brother. There can be no growth without pain, just as our minds ache when our viewpoints are challenged. The youth is coming, dear brothers. And it is their world. We must inspect the west gate to ensure its efficacy and inspect ourselves to ensure we know why the west gate has a guard. Let there be light The goal of this section is to highlight topics or ideas that have had some sort of impact on the Master. This month it will focus on the education meeting held on the third Wednesday. The initial topic centered on virtues, both Masonic and otherwise. This transitioned to vice. What made the topic interesting is that is was not a unidirectional event. WB Matt introduced a topic, gave a small overview, and discussion ensued among the people present. What impressed me the most was how much of himself each participant shared. You cannot talk about virtue and vice without divulging some of yourself. We often talk about Light or knowledge. Often however, our view of our own knowledge is tainted by our own perception of what we think we know, which is usually less than our true knowledge. The forum utilized at the education night generated true sharing, and thus Light. I challenge each of you to examine your views and opinions by entering into discussions with others. You may be surprised at how much both of you grow by sharing your Light. LET THERE BE LIGHT!! TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 6

OFFICIAL VISIT SCHEDULE AND GMAIL CALENDAR Fellow Officers and Brethren, I would like to make an official visit to the following Lodges this year with at least half of our officer line along with as many brothers as desire to attend. Nothing in Mount Moriah #19 (Douglas) Nothing Perfect Ashlar #12 (Bisbee) San Pedro #55 (Benson) Wilcox #10 April in May in June (Grand Lodge) 7 July - unless they go dark 26 Sept 13 Oct NOTICE The TMB schedules all building reservations. Contact Bob Frankenfield, retiredbob69@yahoo.com or Al Camacho, bombtek@cox.net I will bring this up at each stated meeting and will need to know how many will attend so that I can inform the WM of that Lodge what to expect at their meals. The work load of the Lodge is currently high, and keeping everyone informed is not always easy. To address this issue I am maintaining a Gmail calendar that I can share out to anyone with a Gmail account. This means that you would always have the most up to date scheduling information all the time. All you need is a Gmail account. A Gmail account is free. Just go to and follow the directions to set up your account. Once complete, let the secretary know your new address and he in turn will let me know. Shortly thereafter you will receive an at that address from huachuca53@gmail.com. This will be me sending you an invitation to share my calendar. Answer the invitation and your GMail calendar will automatically be updated. You can view your Gmail calendar from your Gmail account. There is a tab at the top of the screen for Calendar. You can also have a daily schedule sent to you. I do this and it really helps. At a minimum, I strongly encourage the officers of the Lodge to do this as well as anyone is active or wants to be active in the Lodge activities. Again, once you set up your Gmail account and I get notified of it, all scheduling will be automatically provided to you.
