FROM THE EAST Grand Lodge has come and gone which means the year is half over, but it also means the Grand Lodge year has just begun. You should all be proud of Your Lodge, and Your efforts. Your Lodge has received the Master Web Award. The builder of the web site and the administrator as well, is my lovely wife, Sharon. We all need to let her know how much we appreciate her efforts. The Lodge also received the Builder award. This award is due to YOUR hard work: the large amount of degree work over the past year, the several dinners and other family events, the time taken by the Lodge officers to visit other Lodges, and the efforts of the proud few who assist in calling our distant members. We have done well, but there is room for improvement. The Master Builder and Master Architect Award are within our grasp and require nothing more than a continuation of our work with the addition of more assistance in communicating with our absent members. I ask everyone who is not currently attending Lodge to step forward and make this your contribution to the Lodge. Just 10 or 15 minutes of your time a few times a month is all I ask. It is in this effort that our distant membership can become active in their Lodge without physically being in the state. If you can find the time, contact Bro Jim Elliston at jdelliston@aol.com. Your assistance means more than you can know. We were also presented with the Trestle Board Award. This was a bit of a shock because the usual awards were categorized by Lodge size. Though King Solomon Lodge #5 took first in the category we would have qualified for, it looked as though we missed the mark. However, at the end of the presentation we were recognized as having the best trestle board in the state. This effort is a result of the very hard work and tenacity of a couple Brothers. I started the Trestle Board three years ago, and it was just Okay. Brother Evert Fitzgibbons took over and took it to a much higher level. Finally, Brother Jay Land inherited the beast and found new heights of excellence. As a result, we have set the standard for the State. I was stopped no less than three times while walking to my room by Brothers asking what we are doing and how they can improve. This is the best form of flattery and is our contribution to Free Masonry. Finally, WB Andy Anderson was awarded with Mason of the Year for the State of Arizona. For those that know and love the man, this is no surprise. We are very fortunate to have Andy as a leader within our community and our success is a direct reflection of his mentoring and support. We had ten members present at Grand Lodge, and nearly every officer. It was a fantastic show of support for the Lodge and a reflection of commitment to Arizona Masonry. For those that could not attend for whatever reason, the 130 th Annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Arizona will convene May 31 st to June 3 rd at the Poco Diablo Resort in beautiful Sedona. We drove past the resort on the way home from Flagstaff and I must say that it is beyond beautiful. I stopped there and made a handful of reservations for Wed May 30 th to Sun Jun 3 rd. If you would like one of these rooms let me know and I will forward you a reservation number. Once again, thank you all for your support of the Lodge over the past six months and I ask for continued support in the future. Your Lodge is successful in its work because of you. Our work takes time, but is in keeping with our obligations and our duty to make good men better. TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 2

I have been thinking lately that we are missing something. We all have the symptoms of an illness which is easily curable. The symptoms are displayed each time we get angry, or speak ill of another. They are displayed when we hold grudges, or forget charity. They become apparent in our conversations when we pass judgment on another. The cure for these unfortunate symptoms can be found in education. Thus, I asked Bro. Jay to add another educational section. The focus of this section will be to address very specific areas of our behavior which can be resolved through Masonic teachings. My contributions will tend to cut through the esoteric and get straight to the heart of the matter. This month I would like to talk about a topic mentioned several times at Grand Lodge, and which I have been arguing for several years. The topic is individual responsibility. It amazes my sometimes how often I hear people say why don t we do, or why hasn t anyone done. This isn t specifically a Masonic problem, but perhaps a sign of the times; a generational shift. The point is we all (typically) see things that need to be done but assume that someone else will do it or that if someone wanted you to do it, they would have asked you to. Our ritual work is part of the topic, but the problem goes much further. (We need Brothers to step forward and learn) For those of us who have served in the military, we were taught to pick up trash, even if it isn t ours. Yet how often do we now walk right past an empty container on the ground and not pick it up? Or see a woman or older person approaching a door and not make the effort to open it for them? Or perhaps hear that someone is in need and not consider relieving them of their condition (so far as you can do so..). The point is, if you don t help who will? Individual responsibility doesn t just apply to what we should be doing for ourselves in terms of a virtu- TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 4

ous education or self-improvement, it applies even more so to our interaction with our fellow man. In scouting I was taught to do a good deed daily. It should be no different in adulthood. When we go out of our way for our fellow man, taking individual responsibility for assisting him, not only are we doing the right thing when measured by the G.A.O.T.U., but we are also setting a positive example for those who follow us. (Consider how the plumb and square apply to that comment) This was the obligation of chivalry in the Middle Ages in the times of the Stone Mason Guilds; it should be no different now. Greetings Brethren, FROM THE WEST As all of you are aware we sponsored an all you can eat spaghetti dinner on May 26th at the landmark cafe, due to the efforts of the Master and Brethren of Huachuca Lodge #53 this event was a success to say the least. I want to personally thank Mrs. Pamela Anderson for her assistance providing the facility, the equipment, the staff that assisted us in this endeavor and ordering the food, cooking the food and the set up. Needless to say Mrs. Anderson was also instrumental in the success of this event. I do not have an exact count of meals served, every one by Worshipful Master Phillip Shulsky by the way, but I would estimate the count to be approximately two hundred. The numbers break down like this we made $959.00, minus $ for the food order, $50.00 for tips to the staff for their assistance left us with $ which $20.00 was added to by WB. Andy Anderson for a total of $ to the lodge. Please keep in mind that this total is not from only meals sold there were numerous contributions made by the Brethren and other individuals to support our Lodge. I am having a plaque made for Mrs. Anderson to show her our appreciation. This is not the first event she has helped us with and I hope not the last. So if your sitting at home one Sunday morning and decide to go to breakfast but don't know where to go please go to the landmark cafe and support Mrs. Pam as she does us and many other groups... Just a heads up I am working on our next fund raiser which should take place at the end of July at the Panda express this event should not be very labor intensive. I schedule the event have flyers printed out which each of you will receive one along with everybody in Sierra Vista, show up on the scheduled night, present the flyer and have dinner, how easy is that, at the end of the night the flyers will be counted and we will receive twenty percent of the total that evening in the form of a check sent to the Lodge. These are difficult times for all of us due to the fire many individuals are displaced from there homes, this time has made me so proud to be a Mason, the way the Master and Brethren have pulled together to not only assist Masons but the whole community is humbling. I am proud to be a Mason and a member Huachuca Lodge #53. THANK YOU! Sincerely, Bro. Jeffrey K. York TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 5

FROM THE SOUTH It is summer and it is hot but I think we have all had all of the fire we want for the summer. But what else do we do in the summer? We have picnics and we set up the old Barbeque. Family gatherings are always fun and one of the things we should have in our Masonic life is fun and it always better if it is family fun. Well we are in the planning stages of getting ready to have a Masonic Family Picnic September 17 where we celebrate the entire masonic family including all of the concordant bodies and our families we live with at home too. The next family picnic committee meeting will be on 10 July ata 0900 at Huachuca # 53. Everyones is invited to help plan the picnic who wants to show up. We need all of the help we can get. We want to get involvement of every masonic organization in Chochise County. We plan to have a charity fund raiser with a Chili Cookoff. I wonder if the Eastern Star can make a better Chili than Huachuca 53? Can the Shriners win or will King Solomon? There will be a trophy that the winner can keep for a year and then defend next year against all commers. We will sell tasting cups and the proceeds will go to charity. A flyer will be in the newsletter somewhere for additional information. You can use me as a point of contact if you have questions or want to volenteer to help. We will have games for the kids and food for everyonoe for a nominal fee. We will ask participants to supply side dishes to fill out the tables. Soda and Beer will be available at a nominal fee kids drink free Sodas that is. Solet us know if you will be participateing so we know how much meat to buy, let us know if you will be bringing a side dish so we can coordinate that to avoid all salads and let us know if you want to volenteer so we know what you want to do.. Let s make this the best picnic in the valley. Fraternally, With Great Hunger Bruce Wood Junior Warden Huachuca # 53 FROM THE DDGM From the Arizona Grand Lodge District #11 Deputy Grand Master Several changes took place at Grand Lodge with the District Deputy Grand Master responsibilities and district number. The new district number is #11 (old number was #9), and lodges #5, #12, #53 and #77 make up this district. The other change and most important is that the duties of the Deputy Grand Lecture and the District Deputy Grand Master have been combined. I have again been appointed to this very honored position and stand ready to assist all Lodge Officers at any time. I will be conducting a DDGM #11 workshop on August 13, 2011 and Camp Stone Lodge #77 will be the host lodge. We will start at 11:30 AM with a free lunch, I got a pay raise, and at 12:30 (+ or -) assemble in the lodge room were we will introduce VW Bro. Robert Wainwright, Grand Treasurer, who will talk about the Lodges year end reports and problems that lodges had sending in a correct copy. I have invited all Masters, Wardens and Trustees from all four lodges and invite all Masons to attend as well. This will be an opportunity for Lodges to arrange a one on one work session with the Grand Treasurer to resolve problems and gain further knowledge with the computer program. On another subject, I encourage all Lodge elected Officers to review section in the Arizona Masonic Code (AMC) and encourage each of you to fulfill your obligation as soon as possible. I stand ready to assist at any time and ask that you give me prior notice so there are no conflicts. The next Arizona Masonic Education Academy is schedule for October 20-22, 2011 in Rio Rico at the Esplendor Hotel & Resort. These education academies are really worth the time and cost to attend not only for the fellowship but to meet noted Masonic authors who TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 6

conduct some very interesting talks, plus we just might get a free book (?). I have received, and distributed to Lodge Masters, the awards packet and there are some significant changes. I encourage Master to provide a copy to the Awards Committee Chairman so we can be prepared to submit to Grand Lodge Committees applications for consideration. At a minimum we all have a Mason of the Year worthy of consideration. It is really great to see the Lodges doing degree work and especially Brothers from other lodges helping out. My hat is off to Perfect Ashlar Lodge #12 in Bisbee for the degree practice sessions and the proficiency work being done to get Master Masons certified. Great job also by Bro. Frank Belluardo in sending members s with up coming degree work and these work sessions being conducted. A big "at a boy" to King Solomon Lodge #5 for 1st place with the Lodges newsletter in medium to large size lodge and to Huachuca Lodge #53 for taking "Best of the Best" lodge newsletter of all the lodges in the state. Great job by all. Huachuca lodge #53 also received the Builders Award, one of only two awarded, for the Lodge meeting all 13 mandatory requirements, great job Huachuca Lodge #53. Andrew Anderson DDGM, District #11 FROM THE SECRETARY Office Hours: The Secretary s office will be open at 1700 on lodge meeting nights and every 2nd Saturday from 0830 till From the Secretary's Desk Your aged Secretary pleads that the Brothers who turn Applications please fill them out FULLY and correctly. Otherwise this can delay an applicants Petitions by a month or more. Additionally, if your Lady has a cell would you please communicate that number to the Lodge Secretary. It will be held in confidence. There have been instances when it was not possible to contact a Brother on a matter of some importance. But his Lady knows the whats and wheres of her spouse. The Brothers of Huachuca Lodge #53 have responded magnificently during this current crisis. This is Brotherhood at work. I am honored to be associated with these Brothers. And I would remind you that should you or your Lady need help please call the secretary. So, you Brothers who go TDY a lot leave your wife my number. "She is part of US". you may notice that in the hall there is a bulletin board... been there forever. But, now it contains "Masonic Hot Flashes". These are items you should be familiar with but not have to listen to at the Stated Meetings. So check it periodically... you may find an interesting item. Fraternally, Bill TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 7

MASONIC FAMILY The Club will be dark for July & August so the next meeting will be September 9 at the SV Elks Lodge were we will enjoy the Friday Nite Fish Fry. We will have a program, present several awards and briefly discuss the outcome from the 90th Annual International Convention. The new Intl President is WBro. Sidney Leluan is from Tucson so we can all look forward to attending the 91st Annual Convention in Tucson. From all the Club Officers we hope everyone has a safe and happy summer break. James Lewis Andrew Anderson President Club Secretary A Knight Templar s Sword I will wield my sword in defense of innocent maidens, destitute widows, helpless orphans, and the Christian Religion. So swears each and every Knight Templar as he takes the oath of Masonic Christian Knighthood. As the white leathern apron is the distinguished badge of a Master Mason, the sword is the badge of a valiant and magnanimous Knight Templar. A knight s sword is endowed with three excellent qualities: its hilt with Justice impartial, its blade with Fortitude undaunted, and its point with Mercy unrestrained. Learn from these this important lesson: that when you draw your sword, you should be well assured of the Justice of the cause in which you are engaged; being thus assured, press forward with Fortitude undaunted to victory; and having subdued your enemy, regard him no longer as your foe, but extend to him that glorious attribute of Deity, Mercy. As a Knight Templar, let your honor ever remain as unsullied as the glittering blade of the sword, and hold your sword ready to be drawn in the cause to which you have so solemnly consecrated it; hoping ever, and praying always for the advent of that glorious day when the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established in the top of the mountains ; when swords shall be beaten into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks ; when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more ; when the reign of the Blessed Emanuel, the Prince of Peace, the Great Captain of our Salvation, shall become universal and eternal. Adapted from the ritual of the Order of the Temple by Sir Knight Bennett Thomas Dingwall, III. 9 MASONIC EDUCATION Hidden Mysteries of the Square and Compasses by Bro. Rayna Stanley I beseech your temporary acceptance of the resulting work which was presented in this month s educational lecture; if only for the purpose of explicating the possible meanings which could result in said work. Through a long course of study into Kabbalism, Gematria, Pythagorean charts, and alchemy involving sigils (Burkle, Speculation on the Symbol of the Square and Compasses), a resultant (possible) hidden meaning was reported pertaining to the Square and Compasses. The resulting meaning behind these two symbols of operative and speculative Masons were: Life and Conceal. In this short installation of education for the Trestleboard we will explore what could possibly be meant relating a Concealed Life or Life Concealed with the Square and Compasses. This article will not include depth into the studies that brought the final product of Concealed Life, but, if you are interested in the sources I will include my Works Cited on the last page. In an effort to be relatively thorough in my examination of the Square and Compasses I will first analyze these symbols separately and then synthesize them into a (hopefully) clear list of possibilities. This paper does not intend to solve the riddle as that is well out of my ability both in intellect and time, but instead to explore the information available. Firstly, the Square according to ritual squares our action by the square of virtue. This is a fundamental consideration for all Masons, but it does not address the depth I think the tool, or symbol, deserves. The Square is permanently situated in the East, with the Master. Additionally, it is the only tool of the officers fit to rest upon the Holy Writings. Upon consideration of the obvious rising of the sun and rise of, perhaps life or light, one might find the symbol of the Square quite convenient. In many religions, however, East does not point to life. For example in many Native American religions, South is actually the direction most associated with life. In order to address the Square from a more thoughtful angle, let us address the Holy Writings on which it rests. The Square rests solidly upon the Holy Writings, but why? Is there some Concealed Life written in the text of the book? The Holy Writings are truly the answer to life, but meanings are concealed in the book as evident by the plethora of diverging interpretations. I would go so far as to say that the square does not conceal, the square is the fundamental measure of correct life. As the Holy Writings give us the important lessons which we use in order to truly square our actions, the square is given us to continually check our angles. Another way to regard the Square is a protector of life. The square may protect us from reciprocated wrong doing by emulating, in our lives, the divine principles contained in the Holy Writings. I can find the TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 9

Square, by this logic, as an interpretation of life itself. I have not found any substantive resources which look at the Square being used operatively or speculatively in the realm of concealment. The square has a tendency to be quite rigid and clear in its intention. Rt. WB Don Falconer lies out very nicely by saying, The Square is used to test the angles of a perfect ashlar, it is a universal emblem of morality and justice that inculcates truthfulness, honesty and a strict obedience to the law of God s Word (Falconer). Everything about the Square revolves around our living stones but does not allude to concealing any of these treasured truths. Secondly, the Compasses plainly describe a circle about a given center point (Falconer). We are taught to circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds by using the Compasses. The Compasses are a very mysterious tool or proportion, art and science which can easily be interpreted a number of different ways. By representing a circle or the symbol of the all-embracing principle of Divine manifestation that is perfect and entire timeless and absolute (Falconer), we learn about life again; but it is more than life. Life in a divine sense is not creation or destruction, chaos or equilibrium, but something more mysterious still. In order to explore the Compasses more deeply, we will once again turn to the Holy Writings. An especially telling verse is written in Proverbs 8:27-29: When he established the heavens I was there, when he set a compass on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned the sea to its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth. The Compasses are truly a mysterious tool and symbol of proportion and guidance. If the Compasses can so easily circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds, then what other mysteries does it conceal? Are the compasses indeed a tool which can be used to conceal the mysteries of nature and the divine? If you look at the wonderful teachings of Pythagoras, you learn a great deal may be designed using this valuable tool. The Compasses encircle varying degrees of life from the individual to the global. Compasses are used extensively in geometry, where we might curiously trace nature through her various windings to her most concealed recesses. The Compass is a divine tool and symbol. Lastly, we must look to synthesize these two tools and look at them as one complete symbol powerful and wonderful enough to be the header of all our Masonic doings. In my tentative conclusions of the individual symbols, I have mainly considered the Square to represent life and the Compasses to represent concealment. I am first brought to the image on this symbol resting upon the Holy Writings. TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 10

If we look at the Square and Compasses resting upon the Holy Writings as an allusion to Concealed Life then we are to surmise that our ancient symbol may very well be a badge of our commitment to the sacred mysteries concealed in all the Holy Writings around the globe. The concealed life in these symbols or tools could possibly be the concealed spiritual nature of a Mason, where he need only profess a belief in the GAOTU. The concealed life could be a representation of the spiritual mysteries which all Masons seek. The concealed life could be simply put, the mysteries of our ancient and honorable institution. The light of Masonry has never been extinguished and never will so long as the keepers of the secret deposit the mysteries in the repository of the faithful breast. In conclusion, this paper has addressed some of the possibilities regarding the Square and Compass being representations of Concealed Life. This paper is by no means conclusive, and like all studies into spirituality and mystery, they leave you with more questions than answers. I hope that you were able to take something from this work (whether you agree or disagree) and move on with your personal exploration in thought and spiritualism. Works Cited Burkle, William S. Thoughts On Masonic Funerals There are few occasions when Freemasons may perform a public Masonic funeral, cornerstone laying open installations of officers and so on. By far it is at this time that most non-masons are introduced to Freemasonry-perhaps for the very first time. It is at and during that somber service that most people present will form their opinion and perception of our Fraternity. They most generally know very little about Freemasonry, they are often very curious as to who we are, what we stand for, and what is it that we believe in as an organization. The first thing any non- Mason will observe is the size of the turn out by Masons. Always remember that a Masonic Funeral Service is the final tribute we can pay to our fallen Brother. Attending these services are, in many ways, just as important as attending Lodge meetings - perhaps, even more so, because, as we can do nothing more for our Brother, the Funeral Service is really for the benefit of the deceased Brother's Family and Friends, and it exhibits our genuine care and concern for one of our own. There is a lot more that can be written but I'll finish with this. This is one obligation and commitment that each of us should earnestly strive to fulfill even if we cannot always attend Lodge meetings. Let us demonstrate before the world that we are men who practice Brotherly Love-- all the way to the grave's edge. Andrew Anderson "Fait Lux" TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 11

OFFICIAL VISIT SCHEDULE AND GMAIL CALENDAR Fellow Officers and Brethren, I would like to make an official visit to the following Lodges this year with at least half of our officer line along with as many brothers as desire to attend. Nothing in Mount Moriah #19 (Douglas) Nothing Perfect Ashlar #12 (Bisbee) San Pedro #55 (Benson) Wilcox #10 April in May in June (Grand Lodge) 7 July - unless they go dark 26 Sept 13 Oct NOTICE The TMB schedules all building reservations. Contact Bob Frankenfield, retiredbob69@yahoo.com or Al Camacho, bombtek@cox.net I will bring this up at each stated meeting and will need to know how many will attend so that I can inform the WM of that Lodge what to expect at their meals. The work load of the Lodge is currently high, and keeping everyone informed is not always easy. To address this issue I am maintaining a Gmail calendar that I can share out to anyone with a Gmail account. This means that you would always have the most up to date scheduling information all the time. All you need is a Gmail account. A Gmail account is free. Just go to and follow the directions to set up your account. Once complete, let the secretary know your new address and he in turn will let me know. Shortly thereafter you will receive an at that address from huachuca53@gmail.com. This will be me sending you an invitation to share my calendar. Answer the invitation and your GMail calendar will automatically be updated. You can view your Gmail calendar from your Gmail account. There is a tab at the top of the screen for Calendar. You can also have a daily schedule sent to you. I do this and it really helps. At a minimum, I strongly encourage the officers of the Lodge to do this as well as anyone is active or wants to be active in the Lodge activities. Again, once you set up your Gmail account and I get notified of it, all scheduling will be automatically provided to you.
