2 From The East Brethren, May was a very busy month. The Order of Eastern Star had their annual High Tea, on 2 May, and those of us that attended enjoyed the fellowship and refreshments. Let us all thank and show our appreciation for the Eastern Star in providing refreshments for each of our degree nights. This was coordinated and initiated by Brother Phillip Shulsky last year and has continued this year. The Masonic family working together and supporting each other has strengthened both organizations. In this regard a special thank you goes out to the outgoing Electa Chapter # 51, Worthy Matron, Shirley Elliston, for being instrumental in having the Eastern Star support Huachuca Lodge Number 53. The incoming Worthy Matron is Marlene Lewis, and we look forward to mutually supporting each other throughout the year. Our Stated Meeting attendance was well attended and it was good to see so many Past Masters attending. Throughout the month the Past Masters were an integral part in all the degree work performed. We had two Brothers passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on 12 May. On 19 May and 26 May we initiated two candidates. It was pleasing to see the degree work well attended by the Brothers. We have more degree work to be scheduled in June. Look for the s announcing the degree work, and bring a Brother with you to support our candidates and the degree teams. On 26 May, WB Robert Whitney along with the assistance of Brother Bob Frankenfield, and WB Andy Anderson, presented the winners of Bikes for Books with bicycles. This has been an annual presentation for third and fourth graders at Meyer Elementary School located on Fort Huachuca. Let us all thank WB Whitney et al, for their efforts in this very rewarding program. Again I want to thank each Brother for being a member of Huachuca Lodge Number 53. Paying your Lodge dues, attending Lodge meetings, and supporting our charitable programs is directly related to our Lodge being one of the best in Arizona. Are you approaching two years and have not advanced by meeting your proficiency requirements of your degree? There is a minimum proficiency for you to meet your goal. This consists of completing the approved Grand Lodge Masonic Education Manual and knowing the proper due guards and signs. All Masons that have not completed their degree proficiency should contact the Lodge Secretary, Brother Jim Elliston, for information on the proficiency requirements. Fraternally, Harry C. Brown Worshipful Master 2
3 From The Yest Brethren, I would like to take the time this month to thank Electa Chapter #51, Order of the Eastern Star for two years of outstanding support to Huachuca Lodge #53. Our Lodge has been blessed with MANY new Masons and much degree work. This blessing has come with a cost of time and effort which ALL Masons willingly give. One of my responsibilities last year as Junior Warden was to provide meals at our meetings and degree work. Given my work schedule, I would have never been able to keep up had it not been for Shirley Elliston and her cadre of supporters. Shirley embodies the idea of Masonic family, and has given so much of herself, as have the ladies of Electa #51. That is why the current and junior past Masters of Huachuca #53, along with the current and past Junior Wardens, assisted by W.Bro. Al Camacho, Bro. Eric Coulson, Bro. Eric Navarro, and Bro. Daryl Hosler hosted a steak dinner on May 29 th. This small effort on our part is our way of saying thank you for what you do! Electa Chapter #51 is an organization open to men and women of the Masonic Family, and gives couples the opportunity to sit in Chapter together and share their experiences while growing as individuals, and serving the community. It is an organization well worthy of your time to consider. The survival of the Masonic family rests on the collective efforts of the various bodies. Only together can we adapt and survive. Fraternally, Phillip Shulsky Senior Warden Brethren, From The South What a busy month for Huachuca Lodge #53. Congratulations to Brother Beau, our newest Entered Apprentice. And also Brothers Kris and Warren for being passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. To Brother Daryl for putting together an outstanding spaghetti dinner to benefit our lodge, Future meals are in the works. Brother Phillip through his vision, we were able to sponsor a dinner for the members of the Order of the Eastern Star Electa chapter # 51. The delicious steaks were prepared by Worshipful Brother Matt. Thanks to all of the Brothers who contributed both monetarily and with their time. Many hands made light work. To the Ladies of the Eastern Star, Thank you for all that you do. You make the degree nights a pleasant experience for the candidates, masons, and families. As always all families are welcome to degree night and stated meeting 6pm Fraternally, Brother Jeffrey K. 4 From The DDGM My congratulations to King Solomon Lodge #5, Perfect Ashlar Lodge #12, Mt Moriah Lodge #19, Huachuca Lodge #53 and Camp Stone Lodge #77 on the outstanding degree work each Lodge has performed during the month of May. This is what each Lodge has a mission and purpose to do and the more we do the happier each Member is. I encourage each lodge to continue to do degree work even if the sharing of Candidates is approved by the Masters. We have received a second letter from the MW Grand Master Michael T. Bishop revising the first letter subject - Lodge of Reflection. This revised letter states and I quote the old version " It is to be done in a private room outside of the lodge" It has been changed to read " It is to be done in a private room outside of the lodge room." Have you ever wondered who fills out the Tyler's register? Yes we all sign-in but for most lodges in the county the headings are not being filled out correctly. To start with the proper filling out of the date and year. The date is no problem and the year is thus explained. The Masonic calendar for Ancient Craft Masons commence their era with the creation of the world, calling it ANNO LUCIS (A.L.) "in the year of Light". Add 4000 years to the Common Era. Thus = Another very important responsibility each of us Grand Lodge News The 2010 Grand Lodge Session is scheduled for June 3-5, 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel in Tucson. Even if you have not registered you can still attend just check in at the registration table to be counted and maybe pick-up a meal ticket. This Grand Lodge meeting in Tucson will be the last Grand Lodge meeting in this part of the state for several years to come and it is hoped that you will try to attend any part of the meeting. The Worshipful Master Bruce F. Wood from King Solomon Lodge #5 will open the Grand Lodge at 9 AM on Friday and if many of the Brothers from Cochise Cty were present that would be very special to the MW Grand Master M. Bishop and WM Bruce Wood.. It is really important that as many as the voting Brothers will do their home work on the resolutions and vote for the good of Masonry in Arizona. There are some very important issues to be voted on. Those attending be sure to take you lodge apron for the Officers and everyone needs to show their 2010 dues card. The parade of banners is on Friday morning right after opening. have is to sign-in if attending the meeting. There are occasions were verifying a Mason has attended a meeting, especially if filling a chair, has come up and it can have a negative affect on someone who attended and did not sign in. Take the time before entering the Lodge room and sign in. I, as a Free Mason, believe in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. I will do unto others as I would have them do unto me. I pledge my loyalty to the Government of the United States of America, a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, and will not countenance disloyalty on the part of others. Freemasonry is founded upon these principles and I will use my utmost effort to preserve Question of the Month by Bro. Andrew Anderson The question last month was "When and where was the temple constructed?" The answer, although short, is intriguing. The temple was built on Mt Moriah at Jerusalem in 1004 BC. The new question is "What is a Clandestine Lodge and Masons?" Come back next month for the answer. 4
5 Degrees Conferred On 12 May 2010, brothers Kristoper Robin Capas and Warren Duncan Sherer Jr. both were passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. On 19 May 2010, brother Beau Matthew Leonard was initiated an Entered Apprentice. Degree Work Degree work is tentatively planned for the three Wednesdays following the stated meeting in June. Please check with the lodge officers, look for the Trestleboards for each night, and plan on participating if able. Your continued support is appreciated. Congratulations to all! By Brother Phillip Shulsky Mentorship is a crucial part of what we do. It begins when we sign as a recommender on a candidate s petition and continues the rest of his life. So much of what we do is unwritten. Case in point Lodge etiquette. I ve never actually seen a written document listing all the rules of how we behave in lodge. I ve learned that most seem to be common sense, but a few were not. As I made mistakes, I was constructively corrected by brothers. Thus, they are my mentors. The point is we are all mentors. Young masons, like me, watch the older, more experienced masons. We copy your behaviors and attitudes. We look to you to make us better men. It s a heavy responsibility, I m sure. Mentorship I would like to personally thank all of the active masons of our lodge for mentoring me. I must highlight a couple of our brothers for the extra time and effort they put in with me, and most of the new mason of the last year. Bro Matt Covel has personally carried most of the candidates of the last year through their proficiencies and has strongly encouraged learning the rituals. WB Andy Anderson, in addition to all the other things he does, runs a ritual practice every Tuesday at 5PM at the lodge. It is here, at the practices, where I have learned the most. Charles H Fortner, PM York Rite & Knights Templar, Sir Knight B. Thomas Dingwall, III The York Rite of Freemasonry consists of three separate bodies, the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, the Council of Cryptic Masons (Sometimes known as Royal and Select Masters), and the Commandery of Knights Templar. I am going to introduce you to the Commandery of Knights Templar. In the Commandery of Knights Templar there are three Orders of Knighthood, and they are: Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, the Mediterranean Pass, and Order of Malta, and the Order of the Temple. The Illustrious Order of the Red Cross is founded upon Truth, and is a preparation for the solemnities of the Order of the Temple. As Judaism was a preparation for Christianity, so let the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross be a preparation for the Christian Order of the Temple. This order presents a representation of a public discussion between guards of King Darius of the question, Whether Wine was not the strongest? Whether Kings were not such? Whether Women were not such, or whether Truth was not the strongest of all? The details adopted to more beautifully round out the drama and more pointedly teach the lesson of the almighty force and importance of Truth are beautifully presented in this Order. The Mediterranean Pass and the Order of Malta moves the York Rite mason forward into what has been called secular Masonry. By secular, I refer to Webster s New Collegiate definition,... of or relating to the worldly or temporal issues; not overtly or specifically religious. An action in this Order is taken to teach you to suffer patiently for Christ. The Prior informs the new Knight of Malta that he is instructed to weld his sword virtuously. Fear not to encounter dangers and perils for the sake of Christ. You are to maintain justice, protect, and relieve poor widows and friendless orphans, for this is the true faith and justification of the Christian Knight. The Last and final Order of Christian knighthood is the Order of the Temple. In the conferral the candidate represents a Knight of the period that succeeded the crusades a civil Knight who had made a vow to visit the Holy Sepulchre. The candidate is enjoined for seven years of preparation and begins with an unarmed pilgrimage in the direction of the Holly Shrine. Without sword the candidate is required to act as an unarmed Pilgrim. These years pass as the candidate trods his weary way receiving only bread and water as well as the lessons of comfort and consolidation. Later, the candidate reaches another commandery, receives the vows of full Knighthood, and is granted permission to manfully wield his sword in the defense of innocent maidens, destitute widows, and helpless orphans and the Christian Religion. There has been so much left out and so much more that could be included, that I may not have done justice in my representations of the Order of Knighthood of the York Rite. Why not receive the full story, first hand and petition for membership in the York Rite of Freemasonry. 6

Our next scheduled meeting is July 10 th, 2010 at Huachuca Lodge dining room. The Huachuca Shrine Club had its monthly dinner at Ricardo s. The dinner was a joint meeting with Cochise High Twelve, featuring two speakers from Sierra Vista Regional Hospital, Ms Margaret Hepburn, CEO and Dr. Lanny Cole a Board member. There were 38 Nobels, Brothers and Ladies present. High Twelve Century awards were presented to Brothers Tom Jones, Jim Lewis and his lady Marlene. All the proceeds from the 50/50 drawing and Camel were donated to the Cochise County CHIP program. Plus a donation of $100 by Cochise High Twelve. It was a nice evening by all that attended. Seems that the Camel always gets a few extra donations when we dine there. Maybe because the have a friendly bar there. The Vidalia Onion sales are slower this year due to late arrival from the fields. We received 2450lbs and have about 700lbs left to sell. Walgreen s was nice enough to let the Shrine s set up at all of their locations in Southeast Arizona (41). At the time this article was submitted it looks like the Club won t make it s goal despite the efforts of Nobels Bill Kelly, Dave Kremer, Dale Waldron, Ralph Hooten, Johnny Lankford, Tom Jones, and Lady Joyce Barnard. I must also in a special friend to Masons Elmer Urda 295lbs purchased. Our days at Walmart are a thing of the past. Also in planning is the picnic at Ft Huachuca on August 7th. More to come on that.
