FROM THE EAST Another busy month has passed us and for the first time this year, I am saddened. Brothers we lost a very important piece of Masonic history in Cochise County with the passing of Worshipful Brother Johnnie Wagener. Johnnie served this county, and the state for many years and his loss will be felt by every Masonic body for years to come. Johnnie s loss is going to cause many of us to consider how we approach our ritual work and should lead the contemplative Mason to evaluate his contribution to the craft. Nearly every Lodge in the county tends to rely on the same few Brothers to perform the more difficult selections of our work, especially in the 3 rd degree, but also in other aspects of the work. WB Johnnie raised, I wager, 90% of the Master Masons over the past 3 years. Who else knows that particular part? I can think of only a couple others. Consider what would happen if the G.A.O.T.U. took one or two other Brothers. We would be in very serious trouble! I charge each and every one of you, both active and inactive to measure your cable-tow. Are you pulling your fair share of the work or are you sitting back, forcing your share onto others? Are you a Mason just to wear a ring, or are you living our principles every day? Are your working tools sitting idle, rusting and becoming dull, or do you constantly maintain them in their fullest spender? Only you can answer these questions. To my younger brothers, you need to step up now and learn before the opportunity for mentoring has passed. Don t put off for tomorrow what you should be doing today. None of us knows how many tomorrows there will be. To my more experienced Brothers, attend Lodge, teach the new Masons. We learn in one of our degrees that the most important tenants of our institution are passed on through a succession of ages. Are you doing your part? I know many of you have been doing Masonry for years and are tired, but if you don t come forward, who will? Who else has the experience? If everyone assumes someone else will step up and no one does On a brighter note, the 2 nd Masonic family day was a resounding success! The York rite picked up at least one person, and the Eastern Star picked up two. The Majority in attendance where non-members and that bodes well as that is one of the target groups we didn t have last time. There are several events on the horizon I would ask you all to think about. The first is the grand Lodge annual communication being held in Flagstaff from June 2 nd 5 th. This is an opportunity to see who Masonry works at eh most senior levels. So far I have word that at least 10 from our Lodge will attend. That s a fantastic showing. The next is our friend to friend event schedule for Jun 18 th. This is the time to bring a friend or two who are acting like Masons but have not joined for whatever reason. I ask you all to support this as best you can and reply to our secretary with your intent either positive or negative. The last is a county wide Masonic picnic to be held sometime in September. There will be much more to follow on this. The last topic I would like to bring up concerns our support of the Lodge upon our passing. Our current charitable work is completely support by funds left to the Lodge. If every one of us left just 5 or 10 percent of our estate to the Lodge, the Lodge would be financially stable theoretically forever. Please consider what you can do, I know what I will be doing. 4 FROM THE WEST Masonic Etiquette: A group of Masons act as a unit, as in a Lodge Communication, etiquette takes the form of proper decorum. Loud talk, restless moving about, laughter, flippancy, irreverence toward the Worshipful Master and other constituted officers of the Lodge, passing between the Altar and the East, omission of the sign of fidelity, giving no heed to the business at hand, improper entering and leaving. No man needs to consult a book of etiquette in order to accept the fact that such indecorous behavior is dangerous to the harmony of the Lodge. It is in such an atmosphere that ill will and hard feelings, not to mention the more serious menace of splits and feuds, are most likely to take root to the great danger of the Craft. We all should practice etiquette because of its power May has arrived! It is the official National Military Appreciation Month! For all of you that have served in the military services of our nation THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. Remember the Navy and all they do from support, to transport, to battle on land, air and sea. Serving in our defense worldwide with an independent capability to defend or strike. The Marines are famous for their motto every marine is a rifleman, always ready to defend or attack whenever duty calls. The Army providing support on all fronts has preformed difficult missions worldwide serving mankind at large when humanitarian support is required. Completing the team is the ever-present Air Force. Insuring the support of all the services and providing surgical strikes when necessary anywhere in the world on short notice. So again thank you for your service remembering that many of our brothers are veterans. May is also a time of renewal when the crops and flowers are blooming. So let us focus on renewal of our lodges and the ties that bind all masons together as brothers. I challenge each of you to reach out to a to help maintain harmony. It is a form of courtesy to the individual members and a manifestation of respect to the Craft. Harmony is the first law of the Lodge and the Worshipful Master of his Brethren demands it when he declares the Lodge open. " I now declare the Lodge duly opened and in order for business, at the same time forbidding any idle, immoral or other un-masonic conduct where by the Harmony of the same may be disturbed". Fraternally, BR. Jeffrey York brother that you have not talked to in the last month or more and invite him back to the lodge, or to one of our many events that are educational or social this month. Support the events of the lodge the degree work the education night and the social events planned for this month but also remember the other lodges of the valley. Tombstone King Solomon # 5 will have its Past Master's Day, Camp Stone 77 will have a third degree. Even though it is a month away we will be able to attend Grand Lodge in the first week of June. Restoration, revitalization, regeneration, rejuvenation or renewal all these big words boil down to the simple effort of shaking off the dust in our lodges, doing some spring cleaning of our outlooks and efforts. We need to be looking for a rebirth of energy and attitude to encourage our lodges and our brothers to improve ourselves and our efforts in masonry. So my brothers I am reaching my hand out to you to invite you to push for a better future in masonry. Fraternally, Bruce Wood Junior Warden FROM THE SOUTH TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 4

FROM THE SECRETARY Office Hours: The Secretary s office will be open at 1700 on lodge meeting nights and every 2nd Saturday from 0830 till As the month of April slowly draws to a close we can look back and reflect on a month that was. The Secretary is pleased to disclose that more Petitions are coming in and Masonry is alive and well at Huachuca #53. To date we have Initiated two EA's (Bros. Davison and Trace) On the 16th we celebrated our second "Masonic Family Day" needless to say it was a smashing success. On April 12th we lost a "Mason among Masons" when Ill. Brother Johnnie Wagener joined the Supreme Grand Master in that Celestial Lodge. And WB Chuck suffered the loss of his beloved Lady Emma Fortner who also transitioned to the Celestial Home. Bro. Jim Elliston (Mr. CHIPS) and secretary extraordinaire, being bored, decided to have a bowel resection. He now rests in SVRHC room Yours truly is busily trying to fill the void left by Brother Jim's lame excuse for time off. We have submitted for The Builder's Award, Mason of the Year and Trestle Board Award. Thank you Brother Maurice Mitchell for your extraordinary job. As ever the Secretary is here to assist you in any way possible. All correspondence should be directed to: NOTICE The TMB schedules all building reservations. Contact Bob Frankenfield, retiredbob69@yahoo.com or Al Camacho, bombtek@cox.net Brother William Toliver, Secretary Huachuca Lodge No. 53 PO Box 423 Sierra Vista, AZ toliver1929@gmail.com FROM THE DDGM As I mentioned last month the next "Arizona Masonic Education Academy" is scheduled for October 21-23, 2011 in Rio Rico. Go to for more details and registration. The 129th AZ Grand Lodge Annual meeting will be held June 2-4, 2011 in Little America Hotel, POC is the Lodge Secretary. The Grand Lodge resolutions are available for the Brothers from the Lodge secretaries and will again be read at the May stated meet and discussion will follow. Make your desires known to the lodge officers so they will know how you want the Lodge to vote. As I travel throughout the District I have noticed during degree work that the same Brothers are doing most of the work. I would encourage those who can help with the work, if your cable tow permits, to get involved now don't wait. The next several months are vacation months and some lodge slow down. This would be an excellent opportunity, if you're not traveling, to learn a part of the ritual whether it be a position or a lecture. We talk often about the wages of a Mason or the need to get involved well here is an opportunity that will no doubt be supported by the Lodge Officers. Seriously consider getting involved and become a team member that pays high Masonic wages. WB. Andy Anderson TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 5

MASONIC FAMILY The May 13 meeting will be held at the SV Elks Lodge starting at 5:30 and everyone is invited. Come out and enjoy the fish fry, shrimp or chicken. There will be a program for all to enjoy, the drug dogs are coming.. The 2012 Wolcott Pins are on hand and will be available at this meeting, they are great looking. One of our Charter s, Ill.WB Johnnie McCloud Wagener entered the Celestial Lodge and he will be missed by many of us who knew him. For the past several years and the many health issues he continued to support the Lodge and perform his duties as the Grand Lodge District Deputy Grand Lecture District #9. We also lost Lady Emma Fortner and her always smiling expression for which she was known. Lady Emma was very involved for many years with the Order of Eastern Star and the Order of Amaranth. Lady Emma and WB Chuck travelled many miles and served many hours when WB Chuck served as the Grand Royal Patron Grand Court of Amaranth in Arizona. Cochise Scottish Rite Club Ill WB Johnnie Wagner will be remembered by many of as a Brother who encouraged each of us to do our best at whatever it is that we put into our Masonic lives. He will be missed by all of us in the many orders that he belonged too. I ll always remember him as Mason of the year in Arizona for The Scottish Rite Class Reunion is in Tucson on May 6-7, Hope to see you there as a sideliner or a candidate in the class. Huachuca Shrine Club Our last club meeting was held at the Landmark Café on April 16th. It was a nice evening with new faces showing up. We had a total of 20 Nobles, Ladies and guests for dinner. President Jones announced that we are using the storefront of the Super Wal-Mart for our Vidalia Onion sales location. The last two weekends in May have been slotted in by Wal-Mart for the Club s use. More details will be announced as they are received from Sabbar. With all the rain in Georgia a confirmed delivery can t be made. Maybe presales from your friends and neighbors would be a good idea. Only $5 per five pound bag, instead of ten-pound bags this year. May 21, 2011 meeting, will be at the Landmark Café at 5:30pm. Looking forward to seeing a good turn out then. Please RSVP by May 19th to Tom Jones at tejones446@yahoo.com or call (520) TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 6

MASONIC EDUCATION MEMENTO MORI This year has been filled with bittersweet experiences for us at Huachuca Lodge #53. We have been consistently reminded of the grand spectacle that is life. We have gained much in the way of Masonic youth, but dark shadows are always on the horizon and we must never take for granted that which can be taken from us. This month in particular has reminded me of Memento Mori, or that we all must die. I find comfort in the reminder that to the Mason, there is no night. As the sun sets on us and we find ourselves returned to the clay from which we are all born, so to shall the sun give rise to the productiveness of future Masons; ever remembering the lessons of our mentors and brothers. If anyone has not read the inscription on the ring I wear daily, it reads: virtus iunxit mors non separabit. This roughly translates to: That which virtue unites, death cannot separate. This is the best way I can accept and understand the strong tie I have to Masonry. I use this as a daily reminder of that solemn obligation I took as a Mason and the finality of my own place as a creature on this earth. By this I glean that Memento Mori is an epitaph in its own right. My brothers, I have struggled with approaching this month s education as a simple exploration of meanings and history and have been caused to be much more reflective. Memento Mori does not offer us any explication as to what awaits us after death has enveloped us in his dark cloak, but rather to remind us of the level. Memento Mori reminds us that life is temporal and that with every moral thought and charitable action we strengthen the fiber that connects us with the ethereal. It is here on this plane that I shall ever meet, act and part with you my brothers. Memento Mori. TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 7

OFFICIAL VISIT SCHEDULE AND GMAIL CALENDAR Fellow Officers and Brethren, I would like to make an official visit to the following Lodges this year with at least half of our officer line along with as many brothers as desire to attend. Nothing in Mount Moriah #19 (Douglas) Nothing Perfect Ashlar #12 (Bisbee) San Pedro #55 (Benson) Wilcox #10 April in May in June (Grand Lodge) 7 July - unless they go dark 26 Sept 13 Oct I will bring this up at each stated meeting and will need to know how many will attend so that I can inform the WM of that Lodge what to expect at their meals. The work load of the Lodge is currently high, and keeping everyone informed is not always easy. To address this issue I am maintaining a Gmail calendar that I can share out to anyone with a Gmail account. This means that you would always have the most up to date scheduling information all the time. All you need is a Gmail account. A Gmail account is free. Just go to and follow the directions to set up your account. Once complete, let the secretary know your new address and he in turn will let me know. Shortly thereafter you will receive an at that address from huachuca53@gmail.com. This will be me sending you an invitation to share my calendar. Answer the invitation and your GMail calendar will automatically be updated. You can view your Gmail calendar from your Gmail account. There is a tab at the top of the screen for Calendar. You can also have a daily schedule sent to you. I do this and it really helps. At a minimum, I strongly encourage the officers of the Lodge to do this as well as anyone is active or wants to be active in the Lodge activities. Again, once you set up your Gmail account and I get notified of it, all scheduling will be automatically provided to you. Fraternally, Phillip TAKING GOOD MEN, AND MAKING THEM BETTER 11
