It means that conscience is your guide, And honor is your care; There is no greater praise than this: "That fellow's on the Square." And when I die I would not wish A lengthy epitaph; I do not wish a headstone large, Carved with some fulsome chaff, Pick out no single deed of mine, If such a deed there be, To 'grave upon my monument, For those who come to see, Just this one phrase of all I choose, To show my life was fair: "Here sleepeth now a fellow who Was always on the Square." Come support our Jobbies by attending their upcoming Installation Ceremony Saturday June 12 at 4:00PM. You've seen them helping out with our dinners, now come see what they *really* do. From The East Going Dark My Brothers, soon we will go dark for the summer months. When I think about this time of the year I m always struck by the simple words of our closing charge;. forget not the duties you have heard so frequently inculcated and so forcefully recommended in this Lodge. Although we may not be present in Lodge we still carry our obligations with us wherever we travel. There is much work to accomplish in our time of darkness. While traditionally this time was set aside for farmer s to tend to their fields or for Lodge members to go on vacation, we have an opportunity to continue our labor. You might ask yourself, What can I do to help my Lodge this summer? We have work to do in renovating the Lodge; chances to promote our Lodge in our community and opportunities to improve ourselves through Masonic education. This is not the time to close the door of our Lodge and walk away for the next two months. By our continued Lodge renovations we make the Lodge more attractive to prospective members and likely renters. We need new members to carry on the work of this Lodge. My greatest hope is that there will always be new members to carrying on the work of our departing Brothers. Whatever we can do, within the code of Masonry, to attract Page 1

2 new members we must do. To achieve any of our goals we must be financially stable and be able to weather tough economic conditions. Let us never forget how important our support is to our youth groups. They also have summer activities in which we can play a role. Without our support they could not exist. Remember, the path of fellowship travels both ways. Don t be afraid to ask a Brother for help when a problem needs to be resolved. Brotherly love and charity is more than a hollow phrase in our Lodge. We have made much progress this year in many areas, but we have much to accomplish. The good news for our Lodge is that we have a very talented and committed line of officers. I have the utmost confidence in their ability to lead this Lodge well into the future. Rick Komraus WM From The South When I think of Freemasonry, I think of our long history and traditions. Here in Oregon, that dates back quite a ways! The Grand Lodge was formed on September 15th, 1851 and has held an Annual Communication ever since. Just to put that in perspective; Oregon wasn t admitted into the Union until February 14th, 1859, at which time it became the 33rd state. Masons have been active in Oregon as early as 1846; when a notice went out for Master Masons interested in obtaining a charter for a Lodge to gather. Actually, Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were Masons, so I suppose you could say Masonry in Oregon goes back to 1805 when they reached the Columbia River on their expedition. No matter how you look at it, Masons have helped shape Oregon and we have a long history here! I feel fortunate to be able to participate in Oregon s Freemasonry. I m looking forward to the Annual Communication on June 3rd and 4th where I can do my part to ensure Masonry remains strong and vibrant here in Oregon for many years to come! I am proud to take part and serve our Lodge in the upcoming 160th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Oregon. In order for me to fulfill my duty to the Lodge I need your help. Please take some time to review the proposed Amendments and Resolutions to the Code found here: me your input, whether you agree or disagree with the proposed changes, and any concerns you may have at nmckimmy@gmail.com. It is my duty to represent the will of the Lodge. I am your voice at Grand Lodge and I need to make decisions based on what is best for the future of Masonry and our Lodge. I want to serve you all to the best of my ability. I will take all of your comments into consideration; and based upon your comments and what is presented at the Annual Communication, I will make the best decisions I can. 3 Masonry In The Grand Canyon Worshipful Brother Phil Myers found evidence of FreeMasonry during his recent visit to the Grand Canyon. The inscription on the stone reads: Erected by Flagstaff Lodge No.7, F.&A.M. to commemorate the conferring of the third degree of Masonry at this place on Sept 9, 1913 by Arizona Lodge No. 2, F&A.M. of Phoenix. Phil reports: My wife and I always wanted to go to the Grand Canyon. We finally made it this Spring. It is everything we had heard. We went at sunset and then back the next day. While approaching one of the viewpoints, we noticed a monument with the Square and Compasses. As you can see "Masons are everywhere", even the Grand Canyon. This "local" did not seem to mind our intrusion. Masonry In Texas Brother Florian Costa recently visited Holland Lodge #1 near Houston Texas. They presented him with a commemorative coin celebrating the 150 th anniversary of the founding of the Lodge. He reports: My Brothers, As agreed, on March 10, WB von Phillips has picked me up at Omni Hotel, and provided me with an unforgettable Masonic experience in Houston, Texas! After a wonderful city tour, including the famous Rice University grounds, we have arrived at the Holland Lodge #1. The building itself is very large, with many rooms suited for various Masonic functions. A larger-than-life statue of Anson Jones "The Architect of Annexation" dominates the main lobby. Page 3

4 The evening started with a delicious dinner, prepared by the Sr. and Jr.Stewarts and other Brothers. The Stated Communication Meeting followed, attended by a large number of Brothers, including two other visitors and myself. I was very pleased to note the very high standard of ritual proficiency shown by all Officers, especially by the Worshipful Master. At this point, on behalf of my Brothers at Beaverton # 100 and Crater Lake #211, I would like to extend our best wishes to WM Kasper on the birth of his first son!! There were several issues on the agenda, and the ensuing discussions were carried out in a lively, open, yet brotherly manner. As a token of brotherly appreciation, the Worshipful Master Kasper and the Secretary von Phillips have given me commemorative coins to bring back to our Grand Master Art Bush, WM Rick Komraus of Lodge #100, and DDGM Mike Larsen of Lodge #211. I have tried to express my gratitude for all the courtesies extended to me, although words cannot describe the brotherly love that I have met in Houston! To conclude, I am happy to report that Masonry is alive and thriving in Houston, Texas! So Mote It Be! May God bless you all and the United States of America!
