From The East Brethren, First I want to thank each Brother of Huachuca Lodge Number 53 for being a member of one of the best Lodges in the West. Paying your Lodge dues, attending Lodge meetings, and supporting our charitable programs is the main reason our Lodge is one of the best in the West. Here it is May 2010, next month is the Annual Communication for the Grand Lodge of Arizona. in Tucson, 3-5 June. I look forward to representing the Lodge s members at this 128 th Annual Communication which this year will be convened in Tucson Arizona from the 3 rd to 5 th of June. Masonic degree work for May appears to be two Fellowcraft degrees and two Entered Apprentice degrees. Check your for assignments on the Trestle Boards for these degrees. The Fellowcraft degree work on 12 May will especially need the support of the Brothers since many of our Brothers will be at the Scottish Rite meeting in Phoenix on the 12 th of May. WM Ralph Hooten and the members of Campstone Number 77 are doing a great job in sprucing up the Giacobbi room, where they are now meeting as a daylight lodge, on the second Saturday of each month. Did you know the Grand Lodge has a minimum proficiency? This consists of completing the approved Grand Lodge Masonic Education Manual and knowing the proper due guards and signs. All Master Masons that have not completed the Master Mason proficiency should contact the Lodge Secretary, Brother Jim Elliston, for information on the proficiency requirements. On behalf of Huachuca Lodge Number 53, I thank the Electa Chapter #51 of the Order of the Eastern Star for their honoring the Masons on Saturday, the 24 th of May. It was greatly appreciated by all who attended. The Temple Management Board has generated a list of things that need to be done. When the call goes out for help, let us all answer the call and help in those areas that you are able. Many hands make light the work. Let me remind you again, that registration forms for the Grand Lodge Communication (June 3-5, 2010) are available on the Arizona Grand Lodge web site. As mentioned, this year the Grand Lodge Communication will be held in Tucson. Let us have as many Brothers as possible from Huachuca 53 to support our Grand Master, MWB Michael T. Bishop, at this Grand Lodge Annual Communication. Fraternally, Harry C. Brown Worshipful Master In This Issue From the East... 2 From the West... 3 From the South... 4 Question of the Month... 4 Degrees Conferred... 5 Degree Work... 5 The 128 th Annual Grand Lodge Communications will be held at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson from June 3 rd to the 5 th. All Master Masons should seriously consider attending if within the length of their cable tow. This will be an opportunity to see how Masonry works at the upper levels and, considering it is being held in Tucson, will never be closer to Sierra Vista than this one. Registration forms are available at Registration-Form.pdf 2
From The Yest Brethren, Another month has sped by and your Lodge has been busy. We have initiated new Masons and are preparing them for their next degree. Yes, your Lodge is prospering. Yet in our prosperity, we are decaying. As I explained in last month s article, I am fortunate to have had four mentors of various ages and levels of experience. Our new brothers may not be experiencing the same benefit. Why? Perhaps it is because though we are very lucky to have gained the interest of new men, we are doing little to keep the interest of the old. The No Mason Left Behind program initiated two years ago, and still supported by the current Grand line, was meant to maintain and support our older members who, though not active, are no less our Brothers. WM Brown has desired that our Lodge support the No Mason Left behind, as did WB Covel in his year but both met with the same problem. Someone needs to call these brothers. With over 160 members this is a time consuming task. Most of the active membership are already engaged in several Lodge activities, and typically don t have the ability to take on additional tasks. What we really need is a brother who isn t currently active, but wants to be, and can t generally make it a Lodge meeting. chuca Lodge #53. So far, attendance has been impressive, but most are Brothers who attend evening Lodge as well. So if you are interested in doing a great service to your Lodge, and your Brothers, please contact any of the Lodge officers or the secretary. You will be provided with names and phone numbers of our Brothers. My second topic is more of a question that I am pondering for future action. What are we specifically doing to make good men better? What would you do that is not currently being done? I would welcome your responses to these questions. You can me at loki33w@gmail.com Phillip Shulsky Senior Warden Additionally, some of our older Brothers desire to attend Lodge, but not being able to drive at night are unable to. For these brothers I offer a solution. Campstone #77 is now a daylight Lodge who holds their meetings at Hua- Brother Bob Wilson, our 94 year old brother, fell and broke his left arm (he s left handed) on or about March 30th. He said he expects to fly into O Hara to be with his son on Wednesday 5 May. Keep Bob in your prayers. Safe travels our Brother! 4 From The South Brethren, Dinner for the 5th will be Chili Corn Bread and Cinnamon Rolls so bring your appetites. We have degree work scheduled for the 12th and 19th for a Fellowcraft degree and an Entered Apprentice degree respectively. Please come and support your new brethren. Below is a quote I wish to share. Jeffrey York Junior Warden Remember You Are A Mason When the pressures of recession Make us concentrate on greed, Take heed, a worthy Mason Cares about another's needs; Don't let pressures of the moment Make your obligation sway, Stop and help a fallen brother Or another by the way; What you give is like a bubble Whenever you assist, What it costs in time and trouble Is, soon after, never missed; Brother, bear that obligation You accepted on your knee, It's in direct relation To your own security; Never hesitate, my brother Square your actions now and say, "I'll remember I'm a Mason, "And behave like that today;" "With regard to human kindness And the 'Golden Rule', I pray, I'll remember I'm a Mason... And behave like that today." Author unknown WHAT IS A COWEN? The word cowen has been used to mean a thief of secrets. A more specific use which has fallen out of fashion is to refer to someone who has not been initiated into your personal religion. It literally means "uninitiated." There was also this site from a lodge in Texas that addresses this issue and it was akin to what I had said about it being a thief of secrets. This is the site: What-is-a-Cowan-What-is-an-eavesdropper Contributed by Brother Gene Bull Question of the Month by Bro. Andrew Anderson The question last month was "What is a cubit measure?" In ancient times it equaled the length of the arm from elbow to the tip of the middle finger. It was customary for the Master of the work to use the length of his arm as a standard. Roman cubits were about 17 2/5 inches; that of the Hebrews 22 inches, but its length is now generally stated as 18 English inches. The new question is "When and where was the Temple constructed?" 4
Degrees Conferred Brother Duane Lyndel Brown of Camp Stone 77 was raised to the degree of Master Mason on April 17, WB Daniel Brown, Triangle Lodge No. 548, Lawton, OK (Duane s dad) attended and raised Brother Duane (WM Hiram). Brother Jay Land was initiated on 14 April Congratulations Brother Jay! Congratulations Brother Duane! Degree Work Kristopher Robin Capas will be passed on 12 May EA degree scheduled for 19 May Mr. Nicky T. Kidd was initiated on 1 May 2010; SW E. J. Zavatsky was the Acting Master. Congratulations to our new Brothers, and Welcome! Congratulations Brother Nicky! Taking Good Men, and Making Them Better 5

He fought the disease with the strength he brought to everything he did. His wife of 50 years, Patsy and two sons, William (Helen) of Gastonia, NC and Doughlas of Austin, TX survive Glenn. He has two grandsons, Dakota and Logan of Austin, TX. He also leaves behind his cats Smokey and Daisy and dogs Chance and Bandit. He loved all animals and they loved him in return. Glenn retired from the US Army as a Command Sergeant Major at Ft. Huachuca, AZ, and then served another 16 years as a DoD Civilian. In 2005, he was elected as the Director of the Royal Court of Jesters Court #169 in Tucson. In 2006, he was elected as the Potentate of Sabbar Shrine in Tucson, AZ. After his Family, the Shrine was the cause he gave his time, energy and money to support. He served on the Board of Governors of the Los Angeles Shriners Hospital for Children for four years and continued to help fight for a new Shriners Hospital in LA. He was a man of dignity and integrity and leaves behind so many good friends who supported his fight with lymphoma. His wife will be forever grateful to Drs Persky and Yeager at the Arizona Cancer Center and Drs Bloom and Patel at the University Medical Center. These compasionate doctors and the many Registered Nurses worked so hard to make him well. He was victorious in his life and touched many lives both human and animal. He received many accolades and awards, including two Purple Hearts for service in Vietnam from the Army. He will be missed by so many, especially Patsy. Glenn and Patsy were "The Wind Beneath each others Wings". 6
Donations in his memory may be made to the LA Shriners Hospital for Children or the Daughters of the Nile Foundation. Glenn's Memorial Service was held Friday, 30 April 2010 at Sabbar Shrine at 11:00 a.m., followed by refreshments. 9 Communications COMMENTS FROM THE DDGM #9 During last months stated meetings of Lodges around Cochise County a letter titled Decision #1 from the Grand Master was read in Lodges and titled "The Chamber of Reflection." It was interesting to see the reaction of the different lodges, some interest and some no interest. I see a need for education about a Chamber of Reflection and in the coming months I will attempt to share information relating to what other Lodges have decided to do and the guide lines provided by the Grand Lodge. Very briefly a Chamber of Reflection is used by a Lodge to prepare a Candidate of his initiation. Understand that a chamber of reflection is NOT Past Masters, cont. Peter K Gillespie William C Woolnough * Robert E Whitney Al Camacho Matthew M Covel * Celestial Lodge a part of the ritual, it is a time before the initiation for the Candidate to indulge in some serious meditation and can be one of Freemasonry's most alluring provoking and truly esoteric of symbols. Symbols, these items are specific in nature and are used to provide a very clear and important message not just in the short term but involves the entire journey in Freemasonry. The Grand Lodge Resolution to be read and acted upon were all read during the April Lodges stated meetings. They are now available through the lodge secretary and all Lodge elected Officers and Past Masters who plan to attend Grand Lodge and vote need to be aware of what is contained in these resolutions as they will affect all Members of Lodges in Arizona. Each will decide what action he will take but it is hoped that each will know and understand by doing the home work required to vote responsibly and for the good of Masonry. The vote on all resolutions will take place on Friday afternoon session. A reminder to all Lodges in District #9 that the parade of banners will take place on Friday morning. Andrew M. 13 GRAND LODGE IS COMING The 128th Grand Lodge Communication will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 3rd, 4th, and 5th, in Tucson, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park. This is an opportunity for all in Southern Arizona to attend this "Grand" event. What really makes this session special is that our Master, WM Bruce Wood, will open the Grand session on Friday morning at 9 AM. All Arizona Masons should attend Grand Lodge at least once in their Masonic career. Registration applications are available through the lodge secretary, or can be sent to you on line. We have also received the latest schedule of events for the three days. GRAND LODGE CORNER STONE LAYING What is that all about? The symbolism of the corner stone is the stone that lies at the corner of two walls, and forms the corner of the foundation of an edifice. We have an opportunity on May 22, 2010, to witness a corner stone being laid at a new school in Sahuarita, AZ. Grand Lodge will open at Green Valley Lodge #71 at 10 AM, and than proceed to the school which is located adjacent to Sahuarita Park (not far from the Lodge). If attending, wear your apron and a dark suit. King Solomon Lodge officers wear your frock coat and blue puff tie. For Grand Lodge Officers a tux is appropriate.
