2 NEWSLETTER Greetings JGMS Members: I hope you enjoyed the February General Meeting. Auctions are always fun! Our auction items were all donations from our membership. Please consider donating items future auctions. Thank you to our members who donated and volunteered to set and run the auction. Saturday, March 17 th from 8a.m. to 3p.m. is the JGMS Spring Yard Sale. Ann Lanier, our Secretary is heading up the sale. If you would like to volunteer for the yard sale set contact Ann. When donating clothing, place separated clothing into bags for each group (ex. pants in 1 bag, tops in another). Any items are welcome with the exception of chemicals, paints aka hazardous materials. Pricing will be done by Ann and her team, you don t need to price the items ahead of time. We are looking for members to bake cookies, 2 to 3 cookies to the zip lock sandwich bag. Price your cookies for example $1.50 for a bag of two or $2.00 for three. The $2.00 charge will make change simple and easy. Typically, Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal/ Craisin and Brownies have been some of our best sellers. There will soda available for sale as well. Please drop off baked goods Friday. We are also looking for volunteers to run the baked goods table. Spring Picnic is Saturday, April 14 th from 10a.m. to 3p.m. Please bring a covered dish and desserts. JGMS supplies all meats and condiments. Debbie Lowe is the Chairperson for this event, please contact here with any questions or to volunteer in the set-up. 3 JGMS General Meeting Minutes March, 2018 Meeting was called to order by President Harriet Rose at 7:06 P.M. New members and guests were recognized. Jason Hamilton moved and Caroline Smith seconded that the minutes be approved as published in the newsletter. Motion carried. Announcements of coming events were announced. Anne Lanier reported on the garage sale to be held on March 17,2018 from 8:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. She announced that a sign-up sheet was available with times marked. Junior Field trip is on March 24, Trip is to Cumberland Island. Information on the trip was presented. Craig Hamilton spoke about Earth Day activities at the Landing and asked for volunteers to help. Jason Hamilton reported that JGMS has a spot at the Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach, FL May 4 th & 5 th, Michael Johnson told a member of the club he very much enjoyed the Rockhound Roundup. Treasurer s Report: Debby Ritter gave the report and it said that it will also be posted. She reviewed the voucher system for missed classes. Tim Smeggil reported that the web site has had 37,000 views. Tim Smeggil also announced that the instructors meeting will be May 10, This is a change from the previous date of March 8, The contest for best newsletter is still in operation. Tim Smeggil also reported that Instagram has been added to the web site. Carolyn Smeggil reported that Facebook page has 800 followers and likes. Posts will be reviewed for content. This is the official Facebook page, not the club members only page. Workshop: New kiln is here for glass fusion. The casting classes should begin in April. Club show: Jason Hamilton reported last year s contract has been settled. He is still waiting for confirmation of the contract for this year. He reported that the floor is already about 70% sold out. Rentals: The hall is rented three days in the next week. There are bookings through October. One group is willing to replace the carpet in the main room and donate tables. Heather Ferman reminded members that the room is available for them to rent also. SFMS: Craig reviewed the SFMS meeting in Augusta, GA, held March 9 th & 10 th, He reported that there is an opening for a second vice president. COPS: Craig reported that the program has been busy and is moving into other counties. Facility: Russ Fisette thanked those who helped hang siding of the back of the building. Randy and Russ also replaced the stand for the air conditioning unit. New footers have been placed to hold the light poles. Lights should be up in the parking lot soon.

4 Field trips: Upcoming field to Graves Mt. is coming up April 27 th, Junior night will launch March 15 th, Short instruction and a craft will be the activities. The program is for Elementary through High School. Old Business: By laws dissolution change is still tabled. An effort is still being made to get the ditch at the back of the property drained. New Business: Homer Barrs will head committee to discuss the dissolution question in the by- laws. Tom Frame suggested checking the articles of incorporation for information about dissolution. Jim McAdams requested tailgating start in April. 5 Community Outreach Program March 2018 COPS is branching out. There are several events planned for the next few months. First COPS event is March 8th. It is located at Sandelwood High School an after-school meeting. A home school group of 25 will be visiting JGMS April 3 rd, 2018 for a 2-hr. event, including "General Geology", a visit of our museum and a Craft project. Earth Day is just around the corner April 21 st, 2018, 9am 3pm at the Jacksonville Landing. "General Geology" class is coming up Monday April 23 rd, 2018 from 6pm-9pm. The cost is $9. All are welcome to attend at the Society Building. Two Libraries have contacted JGMS for both programs and displays this summer. Two Cub Scout Troops have scheduled us for programs. One in Green Cove Springs and the other in Argyle. If you are interested in serving with COPS, Please contact me at: Respectfully Submitted Chairperson of COPS Craig Hamilton cbhshell@att.net April Monthly Meeting Speaker Daniel Cardona is currently the Science and Natural Resource Management Specialist at Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve, Florida. He has been with the National Park Service for 31 years with stints at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Gateway National Recreation Area. Before joining the National Park Service, he served as a Naturalist in Frozen Head State Natural Area with the Tennessee Department of Conservation. Mr. Tardona has a particular interest in multicultural perspectives of nature and conservation of natural resources, human-animal interactions, and international nature-based tourism and animal behavioral management. He has a masters and specialists degrees in psychology along with graduate training in comparative animal behavior, resource interpretation and paleozoology. Daniel studied primate behavior in Central America and conducted animal behavioral enrichment research in zoos. He considers himself to be a conservation psychologist as well as a park ranger/ natural resource manager.

7 3 rd Thursday of the Month Movie and Social Schedule This new program is included with your membership to the Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society. This will provide some free educational options and social activities. JGMS will be offering 2 movies and popcorn each month from 7pm 9pm on the third Thursday of each month. The Popcorn is FREE. March 15 Tanzanite, the one generation gemstone Textiles in Jewelry: The Art in Kumihimo April 19 The story of Rewa Okan-Agodi Rubellite Gemstone Adventure Series- The Diamond Story 3 rd Thursday of the Month Youth Activities The 3 rd Thursday of the month is also now youth night. Youth will gather with Jennifer Lake in the Youth Room for activities from 7pm 9pm. This allows the adults to stay and watch the movie of the month. JGMS is not a licensed child care center therefore you must stay at the building the entire time due to liability and insurance requirements, no exceptions. Find a Word Fun Puzzle! 9 Cobb Gem & Mineral Society Rock Swap & Auction April 21 st, am 4pm CCGMS Clubhouse at 516 West Atlanta St. Marietta, GA What kinds of things can you find or bring to a Rock Swap? Well, you may have duplicate specimens in your rock collection. Maybe you are a jewelry maker who sells online and would like to have a fun afternoon selling at the Rock Swap. Have you been out collecting fossils? Bring your extras. I've seen people bring columnar basalt from Washington State that they have found at a landscape site. We had a person who had interesting local mineral specimens that he acquired while he lived in Kosovo. We have people who have slabbed rocks for use in lapidary and people who have purchased things in bulk from mines around the country. You can see, there are lots of different types of related items for sale/trade. And, of course, there is no obligation whatsoever to bring things to trade or sell. You can just show up to see what treasures await. Last year we conducted a small mineral and lapidary material auction along with the other activities. It was such a hit that we have decided to do that again. One more reason to not miss the CCGMS Rock Swap. As suggested above, a Rock Swap is a pretty informal thing. You simply bring your stuff. There are two ways to participate. First, you can reserve a space to display your wares. There is a modest fee of $20.00 for a 10'x10' space. If you are a member of the Cobb County Gem & Mineral Society, the fee is only $ If you would rather, you can display your stuff from the trunk of your car. In that case, we would request a 10% commission to the club for sponsoring the event. Oh...and did I mention that you don't have to be a member of the CCGMS to participate either as a trader or an interested buyer. We'd love to have you stop by.
