Residents from each of the three communities on the Tabor Hills campus take part in crafting handmade gifts to make this event such a success year after year. Of course, the crafting is part of all the fun but selling their wares makes their hard work all the more worthwhile. This past Holiday Bazaar proved once again to be a hit amongst families, friends, neighboring communities, and the general public. Residents and Volunteers throughout campus helped work the three day event, held December 7th through December 9th, selling their handmade crafts, jewelry, and baked goods. 2 Page 2 Exploring Holiday Traditions In effort to explore our diversity, residents of the healthcare facility formed a social activity group over the past holiday season to discover other cultures traditions. Discussions took place regarding unique traditions celebrated during the holidays throughout other countries. Some of those journeyed through include An Irish tradition celebrates Christmas Eve, in honor of the infant Jesus, by choosing the youngest family member to light a candle in the window. The light is a symbol of welcome to anyone who, like Mary and Joseph might be in search of shelter. The candle is left to burn throughout the night and wanderers in need who pass by are given food and money. After church services on Christmas Day, families distribute baked goods to friends and relatives. On December 26th, St. Stephen s Day, children participate in a custom called Feed the Wren. With a wren in a cage, they proceed from door to door singing carols and collecting money for charity. The season ends on January 6th, which is known as Little Christmas. Next, was a slice of what might happen in the Czech Republic and a Christmas Holiday tradition that includes The Throwing of the Shoe. According to a popular superstition, girls are supposed to throw a shoe at Christmas. It is tradition to toss a shoe over your shoulder with your back to the door. If the shoe lands pointing toward the door, she will soon be married. Should the shoe point in the opposite direction, the girl will remain single for at least another year. Also, women should receive a kiss under some mistletoe to ensure love is guaranteed throughout the year. However, it should be noted that mistletoe must be received as a gift and not purchased by the woman being kissed. On a side note, one of the most beautiful Nativity Scenes in the world resides in the Czech Republic, known as the Trebechivice Museum of Nativity Scenes. In fact, it is so beautiful that the Emperor of Vienna was known to come visit it. A younger tradition in Scotland says that Christmas, or Yule as they call it, had not traditionally been celebrated for nearly 400 years. Since the time of John Knox in the 1580s it was banned...against the law to celebrate Christmas or Christ s Mass. So, Christmas has only been celebrated in Scotland since In fact, until the 1960s Christmas was a normal working day for most people in Scotland. In Germany, we learned that the bigger holiday or perhaps just as big as Christmas Day is the day celebrating the Patron Saint Niklaus, since he is the ORIGINAL Santa Claus!!! Although St. Niklaus is really from Greece (at the time, it might even have been Turkey), Germany highly regards December 6 th, the day celebrating St. Niklaus (or St. Nicholas). St. Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Children. Another thing that is said to have originated in Germany is the Advent Calendar and The Advent Wreath.

Tabor Hills Page 3 Exploring Holiday Traditions Next, we delved into the Jewish Holiday of Chanukah (or Hanukah).

During this social discussion, the group tasted homemade potato pancakes, otherwise know as latkes (pronounced lot-keys), which is on the traditional menu for Hanukah.

Next, we learned of two Polish traditions: First, an extra setting is always placed at the table to represent remembrance of all who have passed among loved ones.

Second, is the breaking of Oplatek, which is a wafer type bread, resembling that of the Communion Host. While this tradition was in discussion, the group broke Oplatek together.

Gloria Skolnick, one of our Jewish Residents and her daughter, Elaine, spoke with the group about traditions for the Hanukah Holiday, including the history of the Menorah while listening to Hanukah music and playing with dreidels. The story behind the Dreidel is that Jewish soldiers used it as a symbol or warning to other soldiers. So, if a soldier was seen playing with a Dreidel, other soldiers understood that the enemy was approaching! During this social discussion, the group tasted homemade potato pancakes, otherwise know as latkes (pronounced lot-keys), which is on the traditional menu for Hanukah. In Polish, they are called placki (pronounced plots-keys) which resemble the word latkes. Next, we learned of two Polish traditions: First, an extra setting is always placed at the table to represent remembrance of all who have passed among loved ones. It also symbolizes that there is always room for anyone looking for food and shelter like Mary and Joseph were the night before Jesus was born. Second, is the breaking of Oplatek, which is a wafer type bread, resembling that of the Communion Host. While this tradition was in discussion, the group broke Oplatek together. The head of the household will typically first break Oplatek with his wife then with all the other members of the family. Next, everyone else will break Oplatek with each other. As you do so, you wish each other a special blessing for the upcoming year. Activity Aide, Grace Baldacci, who led this group activity, broke Oplatek with the group and wished each and every resident a healthy, happy year ahead filled with peace and joy. She also let them know that each and every one of them are a blessing to her. Last, Elaine taught us how to sing I m Dreaming of a White Christmas, as well as We Wish You a Merry Christmas in Sign Language!!! That was a real treat. It was a wonderful activity and beautiful experiences, traditions and memories were shared. We all look forward to exploring the holiday traditions of many more ethnicities and cultures next year!

Now, the ever popular Ugly Christmas Sweater has gained notoriety with parties forming to honor the ugliest sweaters to be adorned.

4 Page 4 Christmas Caroling The Healthcare Facility Residents were merrily caroled throughout the holiday season. The month of December brought in carolers from local church choirs and their congregations along with local brownie and girl scout troops. Tabor Hills Staff (pictured right) prepare to serenade the residents of the Healthcare Facility during the holiday season, an annual tradition that makes everyone merry and bright! This year we were lucky enough to have Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus make an appearance and partake in the caroling! Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest Everyone remembers those holiday sweaters that were gifted to them at Christmas. There was often a dreaded box under the tree containing an ugly sweater that was made or bought just for you. Now, the ever popular Ugly Christmas Sweater has gained notoriety with parties forming to honor the ugliest sweaters to be adorned. Adding to the many festivities on campus throughout the holiday season, staff and residents participated in the now time honored tradition of the Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest held on December 15, Pictured here are staff that participated and the 2017 winner of the Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest, Healthcare Facility Resident, Jane Nelson.
