2 2 SURREY ROCKHOUNDER OCTOBER 2016 Workshops: The workshop is located in the basement of Sullivan Hall, nd Street, Surrey. Please Note that for insurance and safety reasons; You must be a club member in order to use the workshop machinery. The workshop is just a small part of the Club s activities. If you wish to use the workshop facilities, please plan on attending some of the regular monthly meetings. Workshop fees: $3.00 per session plus cost of any supplies and large saw usage Beginners Faceting Meetings School Sessions (for school children to learn about us) Sculpture / Carving Monday 7 to 9 p.m. - Lapidary Instructor Franz Derungs Possibly more sessions if trained volunteers become available Not at this time There is no session on Wednesday but the second Wednesday of the month is the Executive meeting and the fourth Wednesday of the month is the General meeting Wednesday Mornings by appointment from interested school groups. Contact Gail Hall No planned classes but the shop is set up for you to bring your soft stone and carve General Open Thursday 6:30 to 9 PM : De Morgan Friday 6:30 to 9 pm when a foreperson is available. 3 3 SURREY ROCKHOUNDER OCTOBER Call to Order: 7:30pm by Bonny Innes September 28, 2016 AGM Minutes 2. In Attendance: 23 Members, 2 Guests 3. Minutes of May 25 as circulated by Errors or Omissions? Acceptance moved by Fred Seconded by Livia 4. Correspondence: Rockhounder magazine is in, spring and summer issues. The new editor is soliciting articles. The cutoff for the winter issue is November 21st. Please ask folks to send pictures that are at least 300dpi, as they turn out blurry at any smaller size. GW Carson, BC Rockhounder Magazine (rockhounder@shaw.ca) 5. Treasurer s Report: Michele. Report given. Sale of opal since last AGM provided a significant contribution to our current balance. Michele requires an assistant! We are still selling tickets to the raffle, 3 for $5. 6. Old Business a) Banner: We need to print up a club banner for PR events and use at the Show. Instant Copy and Print will make us an 18x24 roll up banner that sits on a table for $135. Here are some designs to look at to choose colours: (red-orange, gold-orange, green, etc). Elsha has submitted a new logo design that provides a good indication of the club activities. Fred proposed that there has not been enough input about the logo changes, as the logo design contest took place over the summer when most club members were away. De mentioned that Lynda submitted a design and it was not presented at the meeting. (It was received after the cutoff date.) Michele moved that we should wait and allow more submissions throughout the next month, motion seconded and passed. b) Show business: De wants to use Facebook to advertise the show by making an official Facebook event page. We would like someone to design a banner with the club logo and info for use on the Facebook event page. Everyone can share a copy of our poster on their personal Facebook account. Winnie is organizing volunteers for the show. If anyone still wants to sign up as a volunteer, please contact Winnie. Fred is organizing the cases. De would like volunteers to bring card tables. Bonny will bring one. Kaden might be able to get one. Rita can bring a 6ft table. We will get the cookies at Costco. We have members with Food Safe. Potential activity for the kids: Treasure Hunt/Scavenger Hunt hide a certain colour of rock and the kids have to find them. Kaden volunteers to run this event, De and Kaden will discuss further.

4 4 SURREY ROCKHOUNDER OCTOBER New Business: a) BCLS meeting: Oct 2, 2016, Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall, Essendene Ave, Abbotsford, 1-3:30pm. Bob will be the speaker and he ll be talking about minerals from Vietnam. b) Club Elections: The following have agreed to stand for election or remain in their positions: President: Bonny Innes Vice President: Robert Hendriks 2nd Vice President: Tom Macpherson Secretary: Elsha Noah Treasurer: Michele Jager We need volunteers for the following: Treasurer in Training: Membership Secretary: Membership Secretary Assistant: Program: (starting in December) Ways and Means Assistant: Carla volunteered. 8. Classes: We also need a show chair person in training to work with De now, and during the show and set-up. Show Chair in Training: Beginner s lapidary classes will start on the 17th of October. 5 5 SURREY ROCKHOUNDER OCTOBER 2016 Henry Doerksen Feb 1941-Oct 2016 It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Henry. He passed away peacefully October 8th after a brave battle with cancer. Henry leaves behind his loving wife Lorraine, children Shelley (Patrick), Mitchel (Sylvie), Connie (Keith), six grandchildren Kylie, Amy, Dylan, Keanna, Kyle, Ben; sisters Susan, Anne, Margaret, Lena, Carol, brother Peter, many more relatives & friends. Known for his deep affection for his family & friends Henry is dearly loved & will be forever missed. Henry may you rest in Gods Garden singing and playing golf on the fairways of Heaven. From Fred Henry has been a member of the Surrey Rockhounds for many years but some of us more recent members will remember his smiling and jovial temperament setting up our sound system for our meetings and events for the last 8 years. My, how time flies when you are with friends. I remember that Henry used to win bucket prizes at our show a lot. He said he bought a lot of tickets so he had to win. When you are up there on the golf course Henry, and you stop and find some nice rocks. That s us thinking of you.

7 7 SURREY ROCKHOUNDER OCTOBER 2016 Logo Feedback I think club encompasses all the members, as not all members are artisans. club is what we had on our past logo and club also gives the casual feel that is means to be a member. I will not be able to attend the Oct. meeting however if I was there I would vote for the circle with the beaver and the rockhound tools How many other clubs have changed their logo s recently? What is the rational for changing the log at this time for the Surrey club? How will it benefit the club? I have been studying the new logo designs suggested and keep thinking that the circle logo with the dogwood flowers and the gemstone under the rock hammers best show the nature of the club as I know it as well as the way it has endured. I think sometimes going totally modern loses some of the character which has been infused into the club, but that is just my opinion. The faceting portion should not be forgotten in the design From Fred: Apparently a number of the club members feel that we need to change the logo to update our club's representation in the media world. It seems the City of Surrey doesn't use the beaver anymore and the colours of green, orange and brown especially in the shades used are drab or Halloweenish. Members are trying to have a logo that brings to mind our areas of interest and / or our passions. There is also talk about the colours. I admit that I missed the conversation they had last spring but it was brought into the September meeting and it seemed they were looking for a vote. I got them to hold off for a month while I alerted the membership so they could attend or express their feelings. I personally have not researched the other clubs but I know organizations change their logo to reflect their changing world all of the time. How it will benefit the club can only be answered by a power a lot higher than me. I suggest that members look at the logos and decide if they want a change and what they want. Then let someone know that will be at the meeting because there is a scheduled vote for this. I have been sending out s to alert the membership so they can give input. This change in the logo is likely covered in our charter. I don t have a copy of the Charter so I can t check but as I think it goes, a quorum is able to make changes, with notice.
