Vera Keric and Myron Burse were our greeters at the top of the stairs and Carl Noble checked-in our visitors and guests. Elliott Flick received his Blue Badge. Phil Thoden announced that he is looking for his replacement as the coordinator of the Newsletter reporters for This is an easy way to be involved and support the club. Vicky Lindsey invited everyone to the Bookspring StoryBook Heroes Luncheon on May 6 th, 2016, at the Radisson Hotel. They are currently holding 2 tables for Rotarians. Please RSVP with Mary Reynolds if you re interested in attending. Tillery Castillo is looking for a host for a spring wine tasting, and Russell Gallahan announced another upcoming RCA Red Badge/Mentoring Class coming up on April 12th. Past President Gaines Bagby provided a parking update with multiple ways to get to meetings and park such as Uber, Car2Go and Luxe Valet service. There is also a new parking alternative for Rotarians if the St. David s parking garage is full. It is at the Austin Centre (same building as the Omni Hotel) and their garage is located at 701 Brazos Street. There is no fee to members to park in this garage. Joseph Hang shared the 60-second Member Spotlight. President Harold Ingersoll announced that the Thank Goodness Basket will now be every other week to allow time for fellowship. Michael Portman announced that our Club had donated almost $1,000,000 to Rotary International over the lifetime of the Club, and Past President Tim Von Dohlen made the final donation to push us over the top. Thanks Tim and congratulations Rotary Club of Austin! We then heard good news from Ann Graham, Tom Locke and Tillery Castillo. Dr. Michael Abelson introduced our speaker, Mark Madrid, the President and CEO of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC). Mark grew up in small Texas towns and he knew from an early age that education and hard work were his way out. Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic with an expected 50,000 Hispanic owned businesses in the Austin area by The GAHCC mission is to build our members' personal, business, educational & financial wealth. Mark stated that their organization provides resources and training to cultivate Hispanic leaders. Last year, Mark collaborated with AISD on a Shark Tank like competition called Start Up Superstars. Students from lower income high schools were invited to participate with the winner receiving a $7,000 scholarship. The GAHCC was recently awarded the 2015 United States Hispanic Chamber of the Year. Mark believes that a servant s heart + business mind = Greater Impact. He stated that the heartbeat of the organization is small business owners with a cultural connection.

5 ROTARY REMINDER (4/12/16) PAGE 5 STOP HUNGER NOW MEALS DODGE GUNFIRE... Stop Hunger Now Meals Dodge Gunfire, Checkpoints, Snipers in War-Torn Ukraine (excerpts from article found on Stop Hunger Now website) Gunfire. Rocket launches. Snipers. Have you ever wondered what it s like when the Stop Hunger Now meals arrive in war-torn countries, or how and if they arrive safely? Places like Ukraine, where those left behind after war and devastation have no heat, no money and no food? Nicole Dewberry from Raleigh, North Carolina can tell you exactly what it s like. She s a missionary who recently traveled to eastern Ukraine and sent an to Stop Hunger Now to share her compelling story: I just returned from the Solyvansk region near Donetsk where there is war and devastation. At night and in the mornings we would hear gunfire. When I was there I saw your boxes as we were delivering food to the ones left behind still living in this war zone. I wanted to let you know I saw your boxes in Ukraine and that they are being delivered and it is effective and legit....volunteers with the I Care Refugee Assistance Program distributed the meals to nearly 29,000 people in feeding centers, schools and orphanages that are housing internally displaced people. Alyssa Carlburg from Mission Eurasia said, The people who received Stop Hunger Now meals are much more hopeful than they were before receiving the meals. She continued: They now know that they are not forgotten, and that there are people and organizations that care about their needs, so they are more welcoming and trusting toward our staff, church partners and the local community leaders with whom we are partnering. Based on first-hand accounts from people like Nicole Newberry and impact reports from partners like Mission Eurasia, volunteers who package Stop Hunger Now s meals can take pride in knowing that yes, the meals are being delivered safely even in war-torn areas like Ukraine and yes, they are making a real impact. STRIKES FOR TIKES Rotary members participated in the Strikes for Tikes fundraising event sponsored by Meeting Professionals to benefit Sammy's House for health fragile children. Two of our newest members, Karen Collins and Kirk Loerwald, represented Rotary well during the event and had a great time and even invited one of the hotel players (Embassy Suites Central) to join them in true Rotary style. And as you can see the Sammy's Kids had a ball! Thanks, Rotary, for your support. ~~ Mary Reynolds, Literacy Chair
6 ROTARY REMINDER (4/12/16) PAGE 6 PARKING UPDATE For those of you who missed last week s lunch meeting and didn t hear the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT and/or have ever been turned away on Tuesdays at St. David s Parking Garage when it was full and struggled to find alternative parking nearby, or just said to heck with it and drove back to your office or home, we (finally) have a solution! Thanks to Past President Gaines Bagby, the Rotary Club of Austin has a brand new agreement with Austin Centre (the building right across San Jacinto from the Church think the Omni, but not) where they will provide overflow parking in their garage on (most) Tuesdays during our weekly lunches! Similar to when you park in St. David s garage, this parking will be at NO CHARGE to you. If you park in their garage, you ll request a validation ticket from one of the Hospitality members when you check in at the meeting. If, for some reason, Austin Centre s garage fills up prior to your use there will be a sign placed at the garage entrance and you ll have to find a different spot (street parking, one of the nearby surface lots, etc.); but at this point this isn t expected often. This is a brand new arrangement and is a work in progress but hopefully it will provide a (somewhat) regular solution to our Club s biggest challenge parking! Please note that this is ONLY AVAILABLE for a few hours each Tuesday (you can t park your car there all day for free nor can you park there for free on any other day of the week). So drive by St. David's garage first, but if you see the "Contract Parking Only" sign up then head over to the Austin Centre garage! To enter the Austin Centre parking garage, come down 7 th Street and turn left onto Brazos. The parking garage entrance is on the right.
