Since my last article, I am happy to say that the fall rally at Nucleus will also include the Rebekah Degree, conferred by Mon Valley Rebekah #82. Although our hall is not big enough for both sets of degrees, we have found another venue, only a couple miles away, for the Rebekah Degree. Come out and join us for a great day of Odd Fellowship. I will have more information on the school of instruction in the November magazine. Congratulations to PPRA Deborah Tufts on a great year. This month will be busy on the weekends as well. Come out and show your support. I have to take my hat off to the members of Kingwood #1010. You had a great day for your picnic. The weather was beautiful and there were a lot of great people there. 8 8 T H E P E N N S Y L V A N I A O D D F E L L O W October 2016 BONDS OF BROTHERHOOD THAT LAST A LIFETIME It has been a year this month that both Park K. Snyder, Jr. and Walter L. Jordan passed from May of 1979, where Park K. Snyder, who was secretary for most of his tenure as an Odd Fellow, was honored as Man of the year for the Phoenixville Odd Fellows. Making the presentation was Walter Jordan, longtime friend. When these two Brothers passed, they died within two weeks of each other and were both the oldest tenured members of Vincent Lodge #762, Spring City, and Chosen Friends Encampment #88, Malvern. At the time of the Encampment consolidation (Phoenix Encampment #79 with Chosen Friends #88) in 2001, Park was the Scribe and Walter was the Chief Patriarch. Campbell, James (?), John S. Keenan, John V. Norris. Front Row: Walter L. Jordan, Harry Brunner, William R. McKinley, Jr., Joseph C. Ash, G. Harold Mashman, Clyde McDaniel, Thomas W. (Tom) Gay, Raymond Fulmer. INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS NAMES PARK SNYDER MAN OF YEAR Park K. Snyder, 1222 Monroe Ave., a long-time financial secretary of Phoenix Lodge 212, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, was named Man of the Year of that organization at the annual banquet held in Bull Tavern. Making the presentation, a cash purse, was Walter Jordan, the 1978 recipient, Jordan stressed that Snyder exemplified the true spirit of Odd Fellowship, commenting that Snyder was an individual held with affection, both inside and out of the lodge. He added that the honored man was serving his 25th year as financial secretary and still going strong. Thomas W. Gay, toastmaster, then introduced Glenn W. Stutzman, Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of Pennsylvania, a resident of Johnstown, PA, who, with his wife, were honored guests. Stutzman gave a brief history of the 150-year history of the Encampment, noting that the Order had served a long and illustrious history. Be proud of your Order and make yourself worthy of its fine traditions, he urged. Main speaker of the evening was Wayne D. Jones, Jr., advertising manager of The Evening Phoenix, whose topic was The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case. Using news clippings and also photos, Jones called it the most famous kidnapping in the history of the United States. Jones recounted his trips to Flemington, NJ, where the famous trial was held in 1936, four years after the tragedy. He told of the finding of the body of the baby, the tenseness that abounded in the area for the four years between the kidnapping and the execution of Hauptmann. He called the trial an unjust farce and one in which the convicted man had no chance of fair treatment. He added that Hauptmann s widow was still living and ever hopeful that her husband s name be cleared. Jones said that the entire matter was a mockery, even tiny souvenir ladders being sold in Flemington. He described the hysterical crowds that treated the serious matter at hand as a three-ring circus. The speaker said he was still certain that Hauptmann was an innocent man. He will be publishing a book on the case within the next year or two. Special introductions included Robert W. Perry, treasurer of the Grand Encampment, and Jacob Hanna, district deputy grand patriarch. LEHIGH COUNTY INTERESTING FACTS: YOUR County?? Did you ever wonder if your town had an Odd Fellow Lodge? There were many trees and the grass was well kept. It offered a lot of charm and space. There was a new moon on the night before, so it was dark in the parking lot and surrounding area. This gets to the heart of the which was not appropriate for high school students. Barney was to send the students back in to the dance. Students were not allowed to smoke, drink alcohol or do anything that approached sexual activity. Keep in mind, this was a group of children between the ages of 13 and 18, approximately few more girls than boys and that made things a bit more interesting. Barney walked through the parking lot and the grassy area between the school building and the woods, every ten students back in to school on an average of two every ten packs of cigarettes and 11 bottles of various types of alcohol. Planned Parenthood had been formed in 1916 and Barney should have been given an honorary title for the efforts he made that night to achieve its goals. Some may think that I have chronicled an abnormal situation, with unusually precocious teenagers. I believe difference was Barney was there. After the dance ended and he watched the students depart, he accompanied another member of the lodge, Joe Malloy, who taught mathematics the decorations from the dance held at the lodge hall the Saturday before. They sat and drank a glass of apple cider and discussed the perils of teaching in a high school. Barney commented, The only thing I ever did that from the trenches in France. Joe replied, There is a big difference, the other side had guns and were shooting at us in France, these kids want to interact with each other. Barney went on, I had to look in every car, every buggy, behind every tree, it was nerve racking. And when I saw immediately. Well, inside duty was no piece of cake. The chemistry rooms. The students seemed to know where they could get privacy and they took every advantage. Said Joe. key? asked Barney. NO! exclaimed Joe. I suspect that one of the students found that key and used it to his or her advantage. Barney added. Joe pondered a bit and thoughtfully noted, We should go home and get ready for the students. PICNIC AT ORCHARD MANOR The annual family picnic was held July 9, 2016, it was the 25th annual picnic to be exact!! Again, as always, a great day in all! Thanks to Dianne Robinson and the great staff at Orchard Manor for providing this picnic for the residents and their families and for all Odd Fellows All who attended agreed, A GREAT DAY for a GREAT PICNIC! Than you Orchard Manor. Submitted by: Shirley J. Whitlinger, Past Grand Chaplain Pictured at the picnic table, Emilie J. Pictured at left, and at right, Lee Etta Mansberry, Rebekah Assembly President as they welcomed all and brought greetings from the Grand Lodge and Rebekah Assembly. CONNOQUENESSING LODGE #278 PICNIC A picnic, what better way to in the summer. That is what we had on Saturday, August 27, 2016 when Connoquenessing Lodge #278 hosted in Alameda Park, Butler, Pa. It was a great day, being with our brothers and sisters of Connoquenessing food, and more importantly sharing the fellowship around the picnic tables. Noble Grand and myself in front of the carved stone located on Odd Fellow Circle. The grand stone located in front the Odd Fellows of Butler County. To top of the day, service pins were presented to three lodge brothers. As D.D.G.M. it was an honor to present to CONGRADULATIONS and Best Wishes to John, Dan, and Jim. What a fun day, thank you Connoquennessing Lodge for inviting Dave and me. It will be a day I will always remember. I treasure your friendship! In Friendship, Love, & Truth, Shirley J. Whitlinger D.D.G.M.
