1 PENNSYLVANIA ODD FELLOW AND REBEKAH MAGAZINE Vol. 91 No. 11 CHECK OUT OUR NEW WEB SITE AT BRUSHTON-SWISSVALE LODGE #1107 AND HAMPTON LODGE #1004 UNITE AS ONE At a solemn and bittersweet ceremony conducted by Grand Master David A. Young, and after over 115 years of service to the Pittsburgh area, Brushton-Swissvale Lodge #1107 cemented their union with Hampton Lodge #1004, of Allison Park, who is in the midst of their 125th year. There were roughly 35 Members crammed into the hall of Hampton Lodge #1004 with many Grand Lodge Officers: GM Young, GW Tufts, GS Bailey, GT Cupp, JrPGM Cupp, GMa Dzyak, GCo Whitlinger, GCh Metz and DDGM Faub. Also present, among many visitors, was a large contingent from District #21 s other Lodge, Unified Lodge #2. There were 8 Brothers from Brushton-Swissvale Lodge #1107 and 9 Members from Hampton Lodge #1004. Present to sign the member s register of those not able to attend were outgoing Noble Grand, Marc Rosenwasser, and Secretary, PGM Robert G. Gumbert. During the good of the Order, several Members spoke, one of which was Marc Rosenwasser, who reminisced about transferring thirty years ago from Montefiore Lodge #794 after his Lodge went defunct, and how strong of a welcome he felt from them. On September 27th, his son and sons-in-law were also present to sign the member s register. When Brushton-Swissvale was formed, there were over 200 Members. At the time of the consolidation, they were down to 21, with barely getting a quorum. It was time they made a decision, and many of the members live close to Allison Park. Brushton-Swissvale Lodge #1107, was formed in 1968 from the merger of Swissvale Lodge #227 and Brushton Lodge #1107. They retained Brushton s Lodge information because the charter was older, with Swissvale Lodge #227 being instituted in They met in Swissvale, at 2011 Noble Street, in the hall shown here. It was a bitter night to lose another Lodge, but a sweet night to be able to join as one, as we all know this consolidation will definitely help Hampton Lodge and secure them a bright future. At the end of the night, we had a large delegation of Hampton Lodge there and ready to build Odd Fellowship back up! Shown left are the Brothers of Brushton-Swissvale Lodge #1107, with NG of Hampton Lodge #1004, Jack McIntyre at the podium. On the right are the members of Hampton Lodge #1004 with NG of Brushton-Swissvale Lodge #1107, Marc Rosenwasser, and Grand Master David A. Young (center) looks on. The Tournament was a sell out again and another great fund raising event which provides research funding in seeking of a cure for those affected with a defective CRB1 gene similar to my two blind grandsons Michael Smedley Jr. (16) and Mitchell Smedley (13). Of the 25 foursomes, two were sponsored by IOOF Odd Fellowship from Walker Lodge No, 306 and Perseverance Encampment No In the foursome from Perseverance were Charlie Danihel, Joe Danihel, Mat Sweeney & Courtney Franklin; and Walker s players were Walt Felix, Jack Cohen, Dan Morse & Tony Maffa with Phil Muscarnero and I also from Walker running the putting contest. Shown below are (7) pictures from the event which shows: (1) Michael Jr. & Mitchel at the registration desk along with their Mother (Kristin Smedley CRBF President) and their 10 year old Sister Karissa); (2) the two IOOF hole sponsor signs with the two IOOF foursomes; (3 & 4) Michael hole before each of the 25 foursomes displaying their talents learned at Golf Camp for the Blind noting that their Dad remarked that a foursome can play Mike Jr. or Mitchell s drive if it is best ball (spoken like a proud rather bragging father; (5) Phil & Courtney with Mike & his sons after the boys initial tee off in front of the two IOOF foursomes; (6) Grand Patriarch Charles Danihel at the Putting Contest with Courtney & Phil making sure the putt doesn t go into the parking lot; and (7) Michael Jr. at the piano with music before Kristin spoke about advancements in gene research followed by dinner, the awards and drawings. 11 R E B E K A H M A G A Z I N E 11 THE TREASURER S TALES - NOVEMBER 2016 dinners, family reunions and reliving events of the past year are standard for November. In 1921 Thanksgiving occurred on November 24. Several notable events took place in November On November 11, President Warren Harding dedicated the tomb of the unknown soldier. Arlington Cemetery plays a major role in our order, see for more on the tomb. For more on President Harding see millercenter.org/president/biography/harding-life-in-brief and for more information on Harding. Harding was reputed to be a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, see Barney s lodge was working on a project for Thanksgiving. The lodge had always been involved in civic functions. The weather in 1921 was colder than normal and the cold was a bit hard on the older folks. People furnaces and boilers. Barney lived in an older home with his parents and he had warm morning heaters (see movie at in the living room and kitchen. It wasn t like central heat, but it was adequate. Since there were a few days below zero, Barney didn t like the idea of doing outside decorating for Christmas. Neither did many other members. The high school closed for the whole week of Thanksgiving and Elizabeth came home for the week as well. Grover s Mill High School decided to have a school play for Thanksgiving and Barney booked an extra night, the day after Thanksgiving for an encore performance at the Odd Fellows Hall. The subject of the play was going to be a giant mythical turkey who righted wrongs and protected the American Way. It was to be a talking super turkey. One of the other teachers wrote the play. It should here be noted that prohibition was in full swing in There was a strange aspect of the prohibition law that made it illegal to sell or buy alcohol, but not to drink it. After Barney read the plot for the play, he thought the playwright had taken great liberty with the glitches in the prohibition laws. Our hero and leading actor wore a turkey costume and had a turkey call inside the costume so he could make realistic sounds. Super turkey was arresting moonshiners and bootleggers and turning them over to the police every few minutes. The school presentation had gone over so well, Barney thought he may have misjudged his colleague. It was getting dusk when the cast arrived at the Odd Fellows Temple. Vic s son Woody was given the daunting task of being the turkey. He decided to change into costume in the parking lot so that he would be a bit of a surprise to the audience. While putting on the turkey suit, the turkey call sewn to the inside of misperceived the entire situation and attacked Woody with a vengeance. crowd inside the building to hear. Just as he was starting get the turkeys off him, he saw two eyes our ever-present little buddy, Melchizedek. The turkeys were afraid of toward the roost when they saw Melchizedek. Melchizedek took a double take when he saw the giant turkey, his analysis of the situation, however, was imperfect. He thought he had come across the largest Thanksgiving dinner a raccoon ever had. A little jump and he sunk his sharp teeth into the buttocks of the turkey, and Woody let out a yell that not only carried outside the suit, but may have been heard in Trenton, miles away. Woody ran into the Odd Fellows Temple with Melchizedek hanging on his posterior. He kept yelling, Get him off. Get him off. Only Barney and a few others, knew this wasn t supposed to be part of the play. quickly and picked up an apple. She spoke calmly to Melchizedek. He liked Elizabeth and let go of Woody to take the apple and sit next to her. The whole crowd was laughing so hard and Woody was hurting so much that the class just did the last act of the play and then they went for refreshments. Elizabeth picked up Melchizedek and took him out. She threw a couple apples to him and went back inside. Barney was impressed. He told Elizabeth she had what it took to calm the savage beast. She replied that she hoped she had enough talent to train the high school teacher. The remainder of the evening will be left to your imagination. December has a number of holidays. Christmas is the usual theme. There were other major events in December You will need to wait till next month to see what subject the Grand Treasurer has selected. Comments and questions are always welcomed by the Grand Treasurer. You can contact him by at jcupp275@gmail.com or conventional mail at 160 Jumonville Road, P.O. Box 275, Hopwood, PA Please note that this is a new address. Your Grand Treasurer has entered semi-retirement from the active practice of law to pursue other matters, including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, more of the time (if that is possible) than before.

Any monies received will be used to fund the UN Tour for the students that are selected to make the trip. All checks should be made out to The Donnie Trulick Foundation and mailed to: John Dzyak 126 Hilltop Drive Scottdale, PA Since I am the Quartermaster of the PA Dept Council, I will see that the checks are placed in the special account for the fund.
