4 4 T H E P E N N S Y L V A N I A O D D F E L L O W January 2019 DAYS GONE BY 200 YEARS As we come into 2019, we celebrate a momentous occasion is the history of America the birth of American Odd Fellowship. This year, since we finished the County Lodges over the past five years, we will focus on the formation of American Odd Fellowship. Founded in Baltimore, April 26, 1819, Thomas Wildey, the founder of American Odd Fellowship, started a legacy that is still going today. However, how it happened, and the formation of these Lodges and Grand Lodges is starting to disappear among the folds of time, so it is imperative we learn how we got where we are today. These will be summarized and are taken from History of American Odd Fellowship, The first Decade by James L. Ridgely, Wildey and Welch The city of Baltimore, the great seaport and entrepot of commerce of the State of Maryland, is too well known to require for description. For many years it ranked the third among the cities of the United States in size and population. In the year 1818 its inhabitants were less than sixty thousand, and the whole State was not then more populous than the present city (current population 2017 is approximately 611,000). The war with England had just closed, in which the city had been attacked, and Washington, the capital of the country, but thirtynine miles distant, was captured and its public edifices barbarously burned. It followed that England was much hated by our countrymen, and nowhere was that hatred more intense than in Baltimore. To be an Englishman was an offence to both pride and patriotism, and all such were considered public and perfidious enemies. It was at this period, say in the winter of 1818, that one Thomas Wildey and a certain John Welch, both natives of England, were residents of that city, and as fellow-countrymen were in the habit of spending much of their leisure time together. Wildey had been initiated into an Odd Fellows lodge in the city of London about 1804, when he was twenty-two years of age, and subsequently took an active part in starting another in the same city, under the style of Morning Star Lodge No. 38. Both of these were subordinate to a body then known as the Grand Lodge of England, but whose authority was little recognized outside of London city. There were then, as there are now, in England, many separate organizations and independent lodges; they were secret, and the only bond of union was the use of the same form of what was denominated work. Thus a change of membership from one to the other was provided for, and such arrangements were made with the utmost facility. Wildey emigrated to this country in 1817; the movement which resulted in the formation of the Manchester Unity was so entirely provincial that no knowledge of it had reached the metropolis, and hence he left England without instruction in the work of the Independent Order. During his membership in the two lodges referred to, he had passed through all the offices, having filled the chair of Noble Grand as many as three times. Welch had also been a member of a London lodge, and had passed the chairs before his emigration. Thank You! I am very thankful to be a recipient of your scholarship towards my Bachelor of Science degree. Your financial generosity is a great help for the books and lab expenses needed for my senior year. Last year I greatly enjoyed all of my courses especially the science courses. Over the summer I conducted undergraduate research alongside my groundwater hydrology professor to determine the impact a bioretention basin had on the Jenkintown Creek. I enjoyed presenting my research poster at the undergraduate research symposium which was very educational and overall eye opening experience. These things led me to begin looking at graduate schools for hydrology programs for the school year. I am very excited to finish my undergraduate degree and see what the future has in store for me. Thank you again for your thoughtful and generous gift. Sincerely, Ashlynn Young Temple University Class of 2019 Go Owls!

5 January 2019 R E B E K A H M A G A Z I N E 5 Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right to the Middletown Home! Sunday, December 2nd was Breakfast with Santa. This year we really focused on our residents and their family members, keeping it as a smaller and more intimate event. We had our traditional breakfast smorgasbord, the telling of the Christmas Story, and photos with Santa! But there were a lot of new additions to the event this year. The biggest being Santa s house which was built outside by our talented Maintenance Department. They built a walled and carpeted house outside on our front terrace. Santa s house was fully furnished and made the perfect backdrop for our photos this year. We want to thank the musical talents that performed, the Eastland Alpacas, our volunteers, our staff, and Santa of course! We also want to thank the dogs and handlers from Susquehanna Service Dogs who came to visit. What a great way to start up the holiday season! Merry Christmas! BREAKFAST WITH SANTA Reservation, banquet & skit forms can be found online or by contacting the Grand Lodge office.

8 8 T H E P E N N S Y L V A N I A O D D F E L L O W January 2019 THE TREASURER S TALES - JANUARY 2019 Winter is cold and snowy. This has been the case for a long, long time. In January 1924, winter in New Jersey was no better. Barney had to get supplies for the farm and drive a couple miles to the high school where he taught English. Winter was not his favorite season. Flooding of the Seine caused the primary railway station in Paris to be closed. On January 3, 1924, Howard Carter and his work team discovered the stone sarcophagus of Pharaoh Tutankhamun in his tomb near Luxor, Egypt. The King Tut find led many to believe there was a curse because of the members of the expedition who died, inspiring numerous movies about the Mummy s Curse. See On January 6, 1924, Earl Scruggs was born, listen to his music here: Most of the local turmoil dealt with snow removal and cold weather. Warden and Conductor were upset over the reduction in the size of their bathroom facilities, the tardiness with which their meals arrived, the frozen water bowls and Melchizedek attempting to borrow a dog house on frosty nights. Elizabeth kept her Pomeranian named Alice in the house, even though she had a thick, double coat of fur. On the colder winter nights in mid-january, Elizabeth brought Warden and Conductor into the enclosed back porch. Melchizedek would then invade the dog houses and stay there till he was routed. Each morning, Barney scraped the ice off his Model T and began the process of educating the youth of Grover s Mill. When the snow was too deep, he converted his model T into a snowmobile, remember modeltfordsnowmobile.com/lcmainbriefhistory.htm. The New Jersey Odd Fellows Association raffled off a Model T pickup, donated (well, almost) by a Ford dealer who was an Odd Fellow. There were a thousand chances sold for $1.00 each, a tidy sum then and the equivalent of $14.50 in The new pickup truck was being offered for $ and the dealer gave it to the Odd Fellows for $ After printing, advertising, etc., the New Jersey Odd Fellows Association cleared $800.00; enough to fund the 1924 state picnic. Barney was the lucky winner. He had to drive to Trenton to puck up the pickup. The drawing was held on New Year s Day and the truck was ready to pick up on January 2. School did not start till January 7, so Barney picked up Vic and they started off for Trenton on the frosty morn of January 3, It was a refreshing 26 degrees when they got in the car at 8:00 a.m. The trip was 12.6 miles long, on roads with melting, mushy snow. Barney s Model T touring car did not have a heater or side windows, only side curtains. They were both wearing racoon coats and dressed as well as they could. As Melchizedek saw them leave, he thought one of his giant relatives was eating Barney and Vic; he was afraid to approach. The pickup had a warmer cab, so Barney thought he would let Vic drive it back. Due reverence to age. Today, the 12.6 mile trip would take about 15 minutes on the four-lane highways in existence. In 1924, the uneven roads and melting snow would slow the trip down to one and a half hours. Going slower in cold weather does not keep you warmer. There was a diner, just outside Trenton, that was owned by a Past Grand Patriarch of New Jersey and Barney and Vic planned on eating there on the way back, at Vic s suggestion. When Barney and Vic arrived at the Ford Dealer in Trenton, the pickup truck was shined and had ribbon on the steering wheel. A large basket of goodies was on the passenger seat (really Christmas leftovers donated by local lodge members). Barney walked up to the man in the show room and said he was Barney Wells and here to pick up the pickup. The large man standing in the middle of the showroom floor looked at him with a puzzled look and replied, What? Barney went through the explanation in detail and the man seemed more puzzled as Barney went along. The large man then said, I am Richard Quail, the assistant sales manager. The owner, Bob White, is the guy you need to talk to. He slipped on the ice on his sidewalk on his way into work today and they took him to the hospital. He just hit a patch of ice and flew into a large tree next to the walkway. I was planning on going to visit him after lunch. Barney and Vic related that they had just completed a very cold journey from Grover s Mill and wanted to get the truck and get back home before dark. Barney had to go back to school the following Monday and he wanted to try the truck out. Richard got his Coat and accompanied them to the hospital. In the hall, outside Bob s room, they met with his physician, Dr. Robin Sparrow. Dr. Sparrow said that he had given Bob a sedative, once he was sure he didn t suffer a concussion. He had a severely sprained ankle and a badly bruised tail. He told them that Bob might be a bit groggy, but they could speak to him for a few minutes. Barney and Richard went in and Bob was drifting in and out of sleep. Barney was able to keep his attention long enough to have him approve the release of the pickup to him. Barney and Vic wished him well and returned to the Ford dealership. Barney noticed that the gas guage was almost empty, so he filled the tank and finally started toward home at 3:00 p.m., with Vic driving the pickup. They met at the diner for a very late lunch on the way home. The diner was named The Nest and it was a favorite of all the locals. PGP Martin Fowler owned the place and was reputed to be the best short order cook in New Jersey. Vic was a close buddy to his son-in-law and had picked The Nest because he had been a member of Martin s staff. They also both belonged to the Eagles. Martin came out and started talking to Barney and Vic. After looking at the slush on the new pickup, he commented, It seems like a pretty birdbrained idea to pick up a new truck on a day like this. Barney replied, I am time-restricted. I have to go back to school on Monday and I want to put the snowmobile apparatus back on the car before then. With these high wheels, you can slide on the ice and never know where you might land. Martin went on to explain the menu and recommend the chicken croquettes, the best East of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Vic and Barney had the chicken croquettes and then sipped enough hot tea to keep them warm on the way home. The trip back to Grover s Mill was uneventful, and Barney had his snowmobile package on for school Monday. Next month I will be writing my column from Florida. I will travel South on December 16 and leave the snow and ice for a little while. Keep warm. Comments and questions are always welcomed by the Grand Treasurer. You can contact him by at jcupp275@gmail. com or conventional mail at P.O. Box 275, Hopwood, PA
