1 PENNSYLVANIA ODD FELLOW AND REBEKAH MAGAZINE Vol. 93 No. 5 CHECK OUT OUR NEW WEB SITE AT THE ODD FELLOWS MARCH I saw in a distant city, for over the pathless sea, A scene in the days of my boyhood that will always seem grand to me. I beheld a vast column approaching, with banners half clouded in dust, And I read on the folds when righted, our motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. I saw as the column moved forward, in the ranks both the young and the old, Arrayed in garments of splendor, their regalia of crimson and gold. There marched the prince and the peasant, me thinks I can see them all now. As they moved to the soul-stirring music, with the Knights of the Anvil and Plough. They wore on their breasts strange devices, crossed gavel, crossed axes and keys, The pens, the sword and the hour glass, and a fresh budded rod from a tree. One had the bow and quiver, another the serpent twined rod; And one, dressed in the usual regalia, carried proudly the Word of God. Then came an old man bearing hard on his staff, he must have passed three score and ten, His tottering limbs and wrinkled brow, how I wish I could see him again. He bowed to the throng on the right and the left, he was pleased with his chosen lot And he seemed to say as they passed us by, Forget it not, forget it not. Then a beautiful banner held high in rank, decked with emblems brilliant and bright, Near the top, I remember, were three golden links, and the heart and hand to the right Right under the links in letters of gold, was the motto, Truth, Friendship and Love. God bless the Order, an old man said, as he tried to keep pace with the ranks. They cared for me, they honored my dead, that have crossed over Jordan s banks. When death laid his hand on my only son, without asking, they came to attend. He told me they d come under God s Command, as the widow s and orphan s friend. With fraternal care they carried him out, down where the willows wave, With brotherly hand they laid him away, close by his mother s grave. Don t think it strange I honor these men of the triple links and heart and hand. The truths that we learn from our ritual each night are more precious than silver and gold. In the battle of like we have trials and cares. Ah! Who has not been by tempest tossed? If true to this motto IN GOD WE TRUST, we ll get nearer and nearer the cross. * denotes furnished by Planning Board + denotes details to follow JUNE 2 / Encampment Rally, Johnstown+* (pg 5) State College + JULY 21 / Knoebel s Fun Day, Elysburg+* AUGUST / SGL Session/ 200th Anniv. 4 4 T H E P E N N S Y L V A N I A O D D F E L L O W TREASURER S TALES - MAY 2018 We have been following Barney s exploits on a month by month basis and we are now at May The big event in May 1923 was Memorial Day. Memorial Day was on May 30 for many years, regardless of the day of the week. In 1923 May 30 was on Thursday. May 1923 was marked by a number of interesting events, on the 2nd Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators pitched his 100th shutout, on the 11th there were 10 home runs hit in the game in which the Phillies defeated the Cardinals 20 to 14 and on the 28th the United States Attorney General, Harry M. Daugherty, announced that it was legal for women to wear trousers anywhere. The great arrival was anticipated in May. Barney and Elizabeth were beth would move to later in the summer. As you may recall, Barney lives on a farm with his parents. He is a 10th grade English teacher and a farmer. His parents farm is large by New Jersey standards, 175 acres, and he began building a new house on it in the summer of He gets the summers off from teaching, but he still has a lot of work on the farm. His father is retired from teaching school and now devotes all his time to farming. The last day of school for Grover s Mill High School was May 17. Barney was hoping the baby didn t come till after the 17th of May. He was lucky. On May 18, he awakened without a child and his time was free. His father-in-law, Vic, tried to keep him calm. Vic had six children and had delivered more than a thousand calves and foals during his career to date. Barney had two older sisters and they were camping out waiting for the baby. As we said, the end of school passed and still no baby. Barney was not calm. He had experienced nothing like becoming a parent. He had been gassed in the trenches in France, shot at while crossing no man s land, spent six days with sea sickness crossing the Atlantic, contracted amoebic dysentery and shingles while in the trenches and had his helmet split by and introduce them to literature. No comparison. was frazzled. His father kept himself busy milking and working around the barn. Barney s mother and Elizabeth s mother were with Elizabeth. In 1923, physicians rarely attended normal births. Nothing abnormal was foreseen. Labor started at 9:00 a.m. and by 11:30 a.m., Barney was almost crazy. Barney s father couldn t trust him to help with the milking so he spoke to Vic. Vic was the calmest person on the premises. Vic came to Barney, and told him that a great social responsibility was about to be placed upon him. His brother Odd Fellows and the other men he knew would expect a cigar. Vic inquired about the length of time between contractions to get an idea how much longer the wait would be. He told Barney they should drive to Camden because he knew an Odd Fellow there who was a tobacconist and would give him a good price. Barney objected because the trip would take over two hours both ways. Vic insisted that After much persuading, Barney agreed. Vic insisted that he drive, he didn t think he could trust Barney. Upon arrival in Camden, Vic suggested they restaurants and tea rooms. Vic found a somewhat fancy tea room that was run by a Rebekah and her husband. He tried to delay Barney by drinking three cups of tea. The lunch of chicken croquettes, mashed potatoes and gravy, with a dish of cole slaw came to $0.60 for the two of them. Vic paid and left a nickel for a tip. He then took Barney to the tobacconist. Barney was sure they drove around the block three times before stopping at the store. There were a couple customers, but the owner, Jacob Marley, was an old friend of Vic s and gave them royal treatment. After smelling 25 different cigars and sampling several of them, Vic convinced Barney that a Cuban brand was what he needed. It would take three boxes to cover all the people who would expect a cigar. At $1.50 a box, this was a major expenditure for Barney. Vic convinced him it was worth it. The drive back to Grover s Mill seemed to take forever. They arrived at they arrived, Elizabeth was sitting up in bed, smiling, with a new baby boy. Barney was thrilled. The task of selecting a name was now vital. Much discussion had been held prior to the birth. No decision was made. Barney s father was named Thomas and his father-in-law was named Charles Victor (Vic). He did not want to insult either. Always the diplomat, Elizabeth came up with the solution. So at the christening, it was decided that the new family member would be Schuyler Colfax Wells. People would call him Sky for short and that name would follow him into World War II and beyond, but that is not the end or our story. Upon his return to Grover s Mill, Vic was told he needed to go to the farm of Joseph Carter. Joseph Carter, Jr. was a young man whom Barney had taught three years ago and who farmed with his father. The Carters had a donkey who was in labor and having trouble. Vic dutifully delivered the young jack, without incident. Carter was not in any doubt as to the name for his young donkey, it would be Barney. Comments and questions are always welcomed by the Grand Treasurer. You can contact him by at jcupp275@gmail.com or conventional mail at P.O. Box 275, Hopwood, PA We have a lot of animal-lovers among our residents here at Middletown Home, and this month we had some extra special animal visits! First, we received a visit from a very friendly and talented therapy pig named Charlie. Our residents gathered in the chapel to see Charlie do some amazing tricks. His specialty is playing the piano. Residents enjoyed petting Charlie and feeding him animal crackers (one of Charlie s favorite treats). Charlie will be coming back soon to show off one of his other talents: painting! Another amazing animal experience that happened this month was at the Zembo Shrine Circus. One brave resident, Charlie Hughes, decided to join the circus for the afternoon and Dolly and Charlie the therapy pig MIDDLETOWN HOME ride a camel around the ring! Besides camels and pigs, we also have Blanche and Carolina that visit with our residents here daily. They have become two very well-loved members of our Middletown Home family. We always welcome furry friends here at Middletown Home! Charlie riding on a camel at the 71 st Annual Zembo Shrine Circus Blanche and Carolina love spending time with our residents

5 R E B E K A H M A G A Z I N E 5 PHILADELPHIA COUNTY INTERESTING FACTS: How many Odd Fellow Lodges were in YOUR County?? Did you ever wonder if your town had an Odd Fellow Lodge? Do you know where it was or do you even remember some of these Lodges? If you can take a picture of the Lodge Hall that was once in your town and mail it in, we d be glad to have it for our archives and it could perhaps end up in the magazine! I have attempted to try to categorize Philadelphia County by districts, but have been unsuccessful as much of this history of this county has come and went so quickly, and I d like to be as accurate as possible. Some districts are listed correctly, and some just say Philadelphia. Also, as the temples were being dedicated and moved, many Lodges distinct address. For the next month or two at least, what I m going to do is put them in by Temples. 9 R E B E K A H M A G A Z I N E 9 FROM THE DESK OF ELLIE TRULICK, PRESIDENT It is April 4th. I am doing better at hitting the deadline early. Only one more article and I may have this timing deadline down. This is the May letter to the Brothers and Sisters of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. May is a month of various days to remember. May 3rd, National Day of Prayer. If this country and this Order needs anything it is the prayers of the citizens and the members of our Order. May 13th, Mother s Day. Everyone who is fortunate enough to have their Mother still with them, should honor her. My mother is 92 years old and still going fairly strong. May 19th, Armed Forces Day. Honor those who serve/ served in the military. We have freedom because they served and are continuing to serve. May 28th, Memorial Day. This day is especially to remember the many, many men and women who served this GREAT Country. We MUST NOT FORGET what they have done for us. Again Freedom is Not Free. As you all should know by now I am a very proud FLAG WAVER. I appreciate what we have in the United States of America. So please everyone celebrate the above Special Days in May as best you can. I know that many Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges celebrate Memorial Day with a parade, picnic, etc. Get the public in your towns to know that the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs are not just Odd but are regular people who honor the Flag and Country. I am so excited to help with placing the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. This is a ceremony that if you have never been to, it is well worth the drive to see it. Our Sovereign Grand Master will have a speech to begin the services. Just as an aside some of our Patriarch Militant members have been in the Honor Guard posted on the side lines and carrying our Great Flag. THAT IS IT FOR NOW. HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE EITHER AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN OR AT OUR ANNUAL SESSION IN STATE COLLEGE IN JUNE. ODD FELLOWS AND REBEKAHS ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA 2018 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Association of Western Pennsylvania will again be offering $3,000 scholarship be the 13th consecutive year of the Award since its inauguration back in Award committee chairman, Robert Grant, wants to remind those considering applying or those considering potential applicants, of three requirements in particular: 1. The applicant or a living family relative must be a member of the I.O.O.F. or Rebekahs of Western Pennsylvania. 2. The applicant must be a full-time student majoring in one of the three eligible areas: music, education, or 3. The applicant must have also completed at least one year of full-time college enrollment. A copy of the Rules and an Award Application will be sent to all the lodges representing the Western District in April. The 2018 Awards Committee requests that all lodge secretaries and scribes relay the information to heir respective membership and make copies as necessary for distribution. Information regarding the 2018 Scholarship may also be found on our website: glpaioof.org. The deadline date for submitting applications will be June 16, The committee also asks that the public be made aware of our Award by informing schools, colleges, newspapers, churches, etc. in your respective areas. Your cooperation and assistance in replaying this information will be very much appreciated. Hopefully, we will once again be and worthy recipients this coming July. The Awards, of course are being made to not only defray some of the cost associated with higher education, but also to help increase public awareness of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs organizations, and in turn, hopefully receiving petitions for membership to perpetuate our great Orders.

10 10 T H E P E N N S Y L V A N I A O D D F E L L O W Thanks to the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs for the many cards sent to me while I was in the hospital. It was greatly appreciated. Lee Etta Mansberry, PPRA PENNSYLVANIA HERO NEEDS OUR HELP! As this is the month to memorialize those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, please consider this your call to arms for those still fighting! For Clover Lodge #348 s Noble Grand, David Carlson, this hit too close to home recently. His stepson, Luke Sciulli, was injured in Afghanistan when an IED exploded, shattering his back and pelvis and causing other harm. He has been spending his time in rehab in various places. Currently he is in Tampa for several months. Let s show him what Odd Fellowship is about and help the distressed! His wife, Rose, has been travelling down to Tampa, from Baden, PA, every other week or so. If your Lodge/group, can help, Walmart gift cards, gas cards, Visa Cards would be more then welcomed. Also, PG J. Carl George, and the members of Clover Lodge #348 have been doing different things to help out, so if you wanted to send them anything to help out with their endeavors in this, checks can be made out to Carl and sent to his home address. If you or your Lodge does not have any funds, a simple card shower to let him know you re thinking of him, or to his wife at NG Carlson s address would mean the world. Let s give him our support and love! Luke s address: Luke Sciulli Bruce B. Downs Blvd, SCI Dr Room 21, Tampa, FL Dave Carlson s address: 115 Hamilton Ct., Baden, PA THE CURING RETINAL BLINDNESS FOUNDATION THANKS YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT Looking back on the past seven years we are overwhelmed with pride, and quite frankly ASTONISH- MENT at how our celebration of support and accomplishments has grown. Every year the energy and love for the Cure launches us into new motivation and even more line. We look forward to sharing our past year's accomplishments and most especially our plans ahead at our web site CRB1.org. We could not have accomplished what we did without your support from Odd Fellowship and we are so very grateful that you share this journey with us! A special recognition and thanks goes to Past Grand Master Emilie Cupp and Lee Etta Mansberry Past President of the Rebekah Assembly for having the Curing Retinal Blind- I am very thankful and appreciative to announce that total contributions from Odd Fellowship in the year 2017 amounted to over $18, which has been applied to our many grants toward a cure which includes my two Grandsons (Michael 17 and his brother Mitchell 13). We know you have many causes you are called to support. We are so very grateful that you give to our cause - to preserve and restore sight for CRB1 affected children and adults and to connect them with resources they need to thrive. Finally, with May being Visual Research Month please direct a portion of your donation to the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation CRBF in care of our Grand Lodge Secretary Justin Bailey and thus have it displayed in the PA Odd Fellow and Rebekah Magazine. In FL&T, Brother Bob Smedley CRBF Director J. Carl George s address: C/O Clover Lodge # Sunridge Drive, Freedom, PA 15042
