A BLESSI The newslet ter Becket Keys Church of England School 20 th October 2017 A BLESSING FOR THE NEW SPORTS HALL SEE PAGE 7 IN THIS ISSUE Mrs Scott-Evans writes It is more blessed to give than receive. Acts 20v35 The gift of another holiday is here! What to do with it? If you are looking for ways to use this All Saints Holiday, then look no further! I have a few ideas to share! Firstly, think about one of our Christmas appeals: Cards, Books and Boxes! Each Christmas, we support the Samaritan s Purse Christmas Child appeal for shoeboxes, your sons and daughters have been given leaflets about the appeal and there is information about it on line here: This is a marvellous way to live out Acts 20v35 and to share the Gospel across the world. Please get involved if you can. This year we are also running a book appeal, where we will be asking families to give a book to the school library. You can buy a new book or give a second hand one. It can be fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Simply wrap it up and put on a tag saying who it is from and we will put it under one of our Christmas Trees, in either in main reception or the main hall. When we get to Christmas, we will open them up and add them to our stock in the library. What sort of book would your son/daughter like to receive? I am sure our library would like to receive the same! These are lovely ways to help the school. If every family brought a Contd. on Page 2 9/9/2016 Last minute Opportunity Sign up for World Challenge or the Ski Trip. Page 2 FoBK Murder Mystery Evening What a glamourous crowd! 2 Contd from Page 1 book and a shoe box in, imagine how much joy that would bring! We are also running our usual Christmas Card competition again this year. All students are encouraged to design a card (A5 size). We will choose some winners and their design will be turned into a professional card which will be sent to 1000s of people who work with and support the school. Royalty, politicians and local dignitaries will all receive the card. Winners of the competition receive a book token and 20 copies of the card for their own personal use. Details of the competition have been shared with students in their tutorials and it is also on Show My Homework. Finally, the All Saints Holiday provides an excellent opportunity for students to go over what they have learned during the first term. Your son/daughter may well be set some work on Show My Homework. Alternatively, go through their textbooks and the homeworks they have completed so far and see what they can recall. Simply testing them orally or with key word spelling tests can make a huge difference. Depending on the age of your son/daughter, set aside an amount of time in the week to revise. Year 11 will probably need to be doing a couple of hours a day. Finally, making sure that you have time for rest and recuperation is important. As we have been learning in Year 7 Religion and Philosophy lessons, even God rested after his work of creation. If God Himself knows the importance of rest, then how much more should we allow ourselves time to stop and slow down this coming week. I wish you all a wonderful week. It is my joy to give you Monday off as well. Teachers will be working, but students can have 30 th October as an additional day. We return to school on 31 st October. See you then! Page 2 of 9 Mr Scott-Evans Head Teacher Absence Requests Unfortunately, the school is unable to authorise absences for family holidays during term time. The School is permitted to authorise absence in extenuating circumstances. If this is the case please can you complete a Leave of Absence form available from the office. Sickness As we enter the winter months and there is an increased chance of your son/daughter becoming unwell, please make sure that you call the school before 8.30am to report their absence. Please remember that students should stay at home for 48 hours after their last episode of vomiting or diarrhea. PHILIP HOBBS Rest in Peace Sadly, today was the funeral of Mr Philip Hobbs, the father of two of our students. Love, prayers and best wishes to the family at this sad time, from all at Becket Keys If you previously missed out on the opportunity to sign up for the World Challenge next year and are still keen to go then you are in luck! A place has become available. Please contact Miss Gill as soon as you can if you wish to take up this opportunity! There is also a space on the Ski Trip! Please contact the office as soon as possible in order to take up this place.
Friends of Becket Keys Murder Mystery Event Last Friday saw FoBK hosting an entertaining clue-based Murder Murder Mystery Evening. It was set in the rip roaring 1920 s and it was all about flapper dresses in a tale of family feuds, deception, lies and of course murder. Guests were invited to dress up in true Gatsby style and put their sleuthing skills to the test to solve the murder. The Hall was transformed into a 1920 s stately home setting, with teams decorating their tables with elaborate candelabras, Ostrich Feather plumes and other accessories such as fruit bowls, vases of flowers and decanters. A great evening of fun was had by all, with a fantastic performance from the West End actors and a brilliant script. Huge thanks to Amanda Mullan for organising and her helpers for all their hard work in setting up and running such a lovely evening. Also thanks to the parents and staff who came along to support the event! It has been confirmed that the event raised 700! If you would like to support the next fundraising event, then get in touch with fobk@becketkeys.org for the last tickets left for the Ball on 25 th November Page 3 of 9

Operation Chistmas Child Shoebox Appeal Gift Suggestions Something the child will immediately embrace, like a cuddly toy, doll, skipping rope or a small puzzle. Pens, pencils & sharpeners, crayons or felt pens, stamps & ink pad sets, writing pads or notebooks & paper, solar calculators, colouring & picture books etc. Once again, we will be supporting the Christmas shoebox appeal, to give people in disadvantaged areas the gift of Christmas. This year we are hoping to break our record and donate over 150 shoeboxes! Sixth formers will be visiting Year 7 and Year 8 forms to hand out leaflets to any student who want to pack a shoebox for operation Christmas Child. If other students in any other year group would like to pack a shoe box, please come and see Mrs Ahlner or Mrs Tagg, who have spare leaflets available. Shoeboxes need to be taken to Reception by Monday 6 th November. Help to break our previous record! Toothbrush and toothpaste, bars of wrapped soap, comb or hairbrush, flannel. Hat, cap, gloves or scarf, sunglasses, hair accessories, jewellery set, wind up torch, wrapped sweets (best-before-date must be at least March of the following year). Please DO NOT include - used or damaged items, war related items such as toy guns, play soldiers or knives; chocolate or other food items; liquids or lotions of any type including bubbles; medicines; hand-made or knitted stuffed toys; anything of a political, racial or religious nature; sharp objects; glass containers, mirrors or fragile items; playing cards of the 4-suit variety; clothing other than as listed above. How to pack a shoebox: 1. Get an empty medium sized shoebox, wrapping the lid and box separately in colourful wrapping paper. Attach the appropriate boy/girl label and the age category 2-4, 5-9 or to the top of the shoebox. 2. Fill with a selection of gifts, fun toys, hygiene items and school supplies along with a wow item such as a cuddly toy or deflated football and pump. 3. Make your shipping donation, online is best, you can then discover the destination of your box if you add the barcode supplied to the shoebox. Please donate 3 for each shoebox you send to cover the transportation costs. Alternatively put cash or Page 5 of 9 cheque in an envelope on top of the contents of your box. 4. Pray for the child who will receive your box. You can put a photograph, card or letter in there if you like. 5. Please bring your shoeboxes to Reception on the morning Wednesday November the 9 th. 6 Autumn Harvest at The Patch Eco- club have literally been reaping the fruits of our labours from over the past year. The apple harvest of Bramley, Cox s Orange Pippin and Braeburn were used to make delicious apple crumble up in the food technology rooms. Helped by a sprinkling of home -grown raspberries and blackberries. This week we harvested our pumpkins. Coming up next term; in the science laboratory we will be testing soil samples from the vegetable beds as the acidity, moisture and humus content affect the crops that we are able to grow successfully on The Patch. Nearer Christmas, we will be making decorations by weaving willow and planting crops for an early harvest next year. All are welcome to the Eco Club, come and join us every Wednesday, from pm. Over the half term holiday, you may notice some construction work at The Patch. Unfortunately, the main power cable for the new sports hall has to be connected and the most cost effective route is across The Patch. After discussions with the construction company, we have been assured that any disruption to this area will be corrected and reinstated by our return to school. And enjoyed carving symbols to celebrate this autumn harvest. Page 6 of 9
Dates for your Diary Parent Consultation Evenings Year 8 Wednesday 15 th November 2017 Year 12 Thurs 23 rd November 2017 Year 11 Tues 9 th January 2017 Year 9 Tuesday 23 rd January 2018 (in advance of the Year 9 Curriculum Choices evening on the 6 th February) Year 10 Tuesday 27 th February 2018 Year 11 (invite only) Tuesday 27 th March 2018 Blessing For Our New Sports Hall A brief service was held after school today, on the site of our new sports hall. Holy water was used in the blessing of the new building and a wooden cross buried in the foundations. Prayers were said for the continued success of our school, our community and the builders currently on site. The reading chosen for this occasion was the words of the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians: For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. This building, begun with the Lord s blessing, will be brought to completion with His protection. As a Church of England School, our foundation and corner stone is Jesus Christ. As we enter the All Saints Holidays, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. Mrs. Sharp Deputy Headteacher Year 7 Please note the Change of Date Tuesday 24 th April 2018 A chance to meet the various subject teachers and find out the progress your son/daughter is making. Further details will be sent out closer to the dates. Page 7 of 9 YEAR 11 BERLIN TRIP. FULL DETAILS AFTER THE ALL SAINTS HOLIDAY.
Year 7 Rugby On Tuesday 17 th October Becket Keys Year 7 rugby squad went to St Martin s rugby tournament. They played in 4 games, including Shenfield High School and St John Payne. We unfortunately lost 3 out of 4 games, however, on our last game we won against Shenfield! Bolade played extremely well with his outstanding tackles. Daniel Todd was enthusiastic throughout and encouraged us all! Luke Rouse made some exceptional tackles on some worthy opponents, which allowed us to play as a team and we defiantly did not give up! Thanks to Mr Jones for taking us to the rugby tournament! Harley Rouse Year 7 Sports News Park Run Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Park Run again last week. Remember that you can participate every Saturday at 9.00am. Get there at 8.40am, so you can warm up! All results are kept on the website and you can be ranked throughout the UK. It would be great for all those students who are part of a school team to take part in these events to improve their overall fitness. #parkrun Weald Country Park South Weald Brentwood CM14 5QS. Cross Country Interhouse cross country started this week. Year 8 Rugby The Year 8 boys competed well in their rugby tournament yesterday. The best result was the win against Boswells and the player of the tournament was George Linger. A big shout out to Oscar Warriner, who refereed the games superbly well. George Linger (x2), Matt Matkin, Charlie Seaward and Joe Sherwin all scored tries in the tournament. Well done boys! Page 8 of 9
