1 Tradewind ROTARY CLUB OF HONOLULU Friday, August 19, 2011 I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E 1 Meeting Notes 2 Dates to Remember 3 Birthdays 4 Anniversaries 5 Prospective Members 6 Peacemaker Award 7 Meeting Photos 8 Next Week s Meeting 9 Next Week s Service Volunteers Next meeting: Tuesday, August 23 Royal Hawaiian Hotel Overview of 2011 APEC Summit At Our Previous Meeting August 16, 2011 Past President Jack Lockwood called our meeting to order. Roy Jones got us all thinking about what a wonderful land of opportunity we live in (by explaining how inspired he is by immigrants who come here in search of a better life, educate themselves and their children, and renew the American dream). Maria Lopez Haney, who became a legal US citizen 45 years ago, then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Ken Zeri, accompanied by Carol Sakata on the piano, led us in singing the National Anthem. Jared Furusho served as our Sergeant-at-Arms, Michael Bass took photographs and Robyn Ocepek (hampered by a missing camera) recorded the meeting. Hai Cha Lambert introduced our visitors. Nominations for the Jerry Chang Peacemaker Award are due by September 1. See Caitlyn for more information and a nomination form. Carolann Biederman asked for three more members to host venues for our upcoming Paul Harris Day on September 13. If your company or nonprofit can host some of your fellow Rotarians, please let Carolann or Caitlyn know. Birthdays this week for John Keene, Tom Coyne, Alice Tucker, Don Anderson and Shan Steinmark were recognized, as were club anniversaries for Mike Cote (sponsored by PP Kerry Cloward), Kiersten Faulkner (sponsored by PP Tim Johns), Andy Starn (sponsored by Jesse James), Myron Fuller (sponsored by Pam Chambers) and Rob Hale (sponsored by Frank Haines). Before beginning the presentation, PP Jack Lockwood initiated a contest for members to guess the total number of grandchildren belonging to our four presenters, a real challenge given their youthful looks. All four presenters are involved in Envision Laie, a major community planning effort that has been taking place on the North Shore since approximately The first speaker was Eric Beaver, the President and CEO of Hawaii Reserves, Inc. Eric s family has lived in Laie for several generations. He spoke of his love for the area, but told us that it has become overcrowded, with multiple generations living in most households. The average prices of homes in the area are ten times
2 Tradewind Page 2 more than the average annual income. The plan for Laie currently includes an additional 550 housing units, but Eric believes that a total of 875 new units are needed. Our second presenter was Pane Meatoga, President of the Laie Community Association. Pane told us of the large effort that has been occurring to encourage community members to voice their opinions on the project through many workshops and meetings. He talked about the inadequate number of jobs in the community, where 13% of the population is living below the poverty level. He showed us a picture of one of Envision Laie s first completed projects, a bike path built safely to the side of Kam Highway, running from Laie to Kahuku and built by volunteers. Pane assured us that the community is no longer afraid to ask for what it wants. The third presenter was Dr. Steven Wheelwright, President of BYU-Hawaii, whose campus of 2,500 students from 73 countries is an integral part of the community. Kahuku High School uses the BYU-Hawaii facilities, and some students attend classes there for college credit. Like many higher learning institutions, which are facing ever growing costs, BYU-Hawaii needs to grow at a rate of five to seven percent for the next ten years. To do so, the school needs to expand and refurbish its facilities, including replacing old dormitories and building a new business school. BYU-Hawaii is in support of building a 223-room Courtyard by Marriott on the site where the Laie Inn used to sit, as this will help augment its hotel and hospitality curriculum with meaningful experience for the students. The fourth and final presenter was Von Orgill, the President of the Polynesian Cultural Center. The PCC averages 700,000 to 800,000 visitors per year and provides work experience to many students from BYU-Hawaii. The PCC is also focusing on doing more for local residents by developing a new show, creating a film about the Laie area, opening new restaurants and a Polynesian market, and offering seasonal programs such as a haunted lagoon at Halloween and a Christmas in Polynesia event in December. Von made it very easy for all Honolulu Rotarians to visit the PCC and learn to climb coconut trees, paddle outriggers and twirl fire sticks by presenting special discount cards that entitle each member and one guest to admission to the PCC, dinner and a show for the low price of $35 per person (true value $ per person). Mahalo Von for your generosity! The winner of the contest posed at the beginning of the meeting to guess the presenters total number of grandchildren was Bob Sigall. The correct answer was 33. After a short question and answer period, PP Jack presented the book, The Boy and the Moon to the presenters to be signed and donated to Waianae Elementary School. The meeting was adjourned at 1pm.
